  1. I view myself as being realistic at that time last year, not pessimistic. There may have been only four games to make up, but the Cubs were also behind several teams in the Wild Card race (I don't recall how many) and they were showing no signs of an extended period of good play. And the trading deadline had come and gone, so the likelihood of getting help was not very high. Therefore I (and a lot of other posters, judging from the number of complaints at the time) felt that the Cubs were MORE likely to compete this year than last, and therefore it was more important to have Wood ready for this year than pitching longer last year. I'm not questioning the doctors who said there was no risk of further injury, just saying that the surgery should have taken place immediately so he could start his rehabilitation sooner. And until you mentioned it I'd totally forgotten that Ned was also known as Uncle Ned; I remember him as Master Ned.
  2. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.....There was a statistic known as On-Base Percentage.
  3. My first 300+ point week during the regular season since I joined the league last year (I did have one 300+ point week in the consolation playoffs last year).
  4. There's an important difference between the two. McGwire's 62nd home run set a record. Bonds' 715th is a meaningless, over-hyped home run. It's setting a record that's important, not moving into 2nd place.
  5. They were actually under .500 in early July.
  6. No, it wasn't. I'll grant you that the Cubs still had a slight (although not as realistic as you seem to think) chance of winning the Wild Card. Having Wood undergo surgery immediately wouldn't have been writing off the season, however, as you seem to think it would have been. As others have pointed out, Wood pitching in the setup role wasn't going to make or break the season. By delaying the surgery Wood needlessly missed time this year. There was no excuse for that delay. If he were still able to pitch in a starting role last year at that time then maybe you'd have a point, because then he could have made a difference. But not in the setup role.
  7. I'm pretty sure that was while Steve Phillips was GM.
  8. I don't know if he needs another rehab start. He seems ready to me.
  9. And I'm blowing both of you out of the water this week. :P (Too bad I'm not actually playing either of you.)
  10. I think any free pass Hendry had expired after the 2004-05 offseason, when his sole strategy for improving the Cubs seemed to be addition by subtraction (begging anybody to take Sosa and Farnsworth off our hands for next to nothing in the name of chemistry).
  11. Actually, that's not at all true. Nomar had a stint on the 15-day DL earlier this year, and Alou just went on the DL yesterday with a sprained ankle.
  12. Actually, the Cubs game is earlier. It starts at 3:05 P.M. Central time and should be over before the Chiefs' game starts (unless it's tied 0-0 in the 20th inning :D ).
  13. Does that mean that if I bet on the Cubs to lose, but do to some miraculous, changing-the-space-time-continuum event, the Cubs actually win, you'll reimburse me for my losses? :D
  14. Steve Trachsel had the same pattern during his years with the Cubs. He was good in even-numbered years and stund during odd-numbered years.
  15. Enough of this foolishness. Start winning immediately. That's an order.
  16. You've got to count the pitcher, since a Cub pitcher (Maddux) drove in the only run in the past four games.
  17. For the CUBS, it's near impossible anyway, no? At least this levels the playing field.
  18. The Cubs don't need baseball's help to rig it. They do a good job of it themselves.
  19. Unfortunatly, the players we shoot are usually crap. So if we shoot them, that would make it a crapshoot.
  20. According to ESPN, the Bears signed free agent RB Tony Hollings to a two-year contract. No terms were mentioned. I see this as a sign that they are trying to trade Jones; they wouldn't need Hollings if they already have Jones, Benson, and Peterson.
  21. If Modzilla starting a game thread can't spur the Cubs on to victory, nobody can.
  22. And in one of the two non-shutouts the only Cub run scored on a bases-loaded walk. So just one game in the past six that the Cubs actually scored on a hit.And the walk was to the pitcher! Yep; Maddux had his worst game pitching so far this year, but he was responsible for preventing another shutout.
  23. I'd never heard anything like this before. And the Cardinal ace you're thinking of was Bob Gibson.
