  1. Boo, Saints. (The Falcons were my pick in one of the Survival Football groups I'm in this week. :( )
  2. :?: State Park is nowhere near Knoxville. State Park is in Pennsylvania; Knoxville is in Tennessee. And it's State College, not State Park, but who's keeping score? Doh, I knew that. At least I had the right state. :D
  3. Also Cuse, Jon M. Davis, Brinoch, and Bandeon. EDIT: Oh, and how could I possibly have overlooked Modzilla? :D
  4. Six that I can think of off the top of my head (Tim, Raw, Raisin, BigbadB, DJAXX, and me). And wasn't 1908 in this league at one time (before I joined)?
  5. You're forgetting the training staff. :D
  6. Similarly, in fantasy football the championship usually coincides with the last week in the NFL season when teams already in the playoffs frequently rest their stars (especially those who are a bit banged up). Last year I beat the regular season champion to advance to the championship of the playoffs (which I unfortunately lost) because my opponent's quarterback was Peyton Manning, who played one meaningless series to keep his streak alive since the Colts had already clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
  7. Agreed. If he gets an offer he likes during the offseason he'd take it because the position wouldn't be available if he waits a year. What he could do is accept a low first-season salary from his new team, knowing that the Marlins would have to make up the difference. Mike Shanahan did something like that once. The first year after he was fired as head coach of the Raiders, he took a job as quarterbacks coach of the Broncos (the start of his relationship with John Elway) on a strictly voluntary basis because he still had time remaining on his Raiders contract, so he stuck it to the Raiders by making them pay for him to serve on the Broncos staff.
  8. For now I'm saying middle of the pack (I don't think they're really as bad as this year's record would indicate). That could change if Hendry has a good offseason, but after the last couple of years I'm taking an "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude.
  9. What's the all-time record? :D
  10. I picked Baltimore too, but I don't recall whether it was in the NSBB pool or the other one I'm in. Whichever one I didn't pick the Ravens in, I picked the Falcons over the Aints. I'm going to Charlotte to watch the game next Sunday. I usually go to one game per year. Last year I went to the game against New England.
  11. Last year's NFC champions at this year's NFC champions. :D My prediction: The home team will score more points than the visitors.
  12. Say what? I'm posting from an alternate reality where it doesn't suck to be a cubs fan and bad memories are softened by occasional successes. Or possibly denial. And in that alternate reality Ron is hopefully in the Hall of Fame. :D
  13. If the Cubs lost out on a playoff spot I think Brown would have been villified the way Don Young was in 1969.
  14. In one of my fantasy weeks I have the Giants' defense and my opponent has Eli Manning. Talk about trash offsetting trash. :D As far as I'm concerned the Seahawks can score all they want this week, because they won't be scoring much next week.
  15. Dempster took one for the team today and gave away what looked like a Cub win to keep at least a two game lead over Pittsburgh.
  16. Huge wins for all three of my teams (Bears, Colts, and Panthers). For the Panthers, it was an absolute must win on the road against an equally desperate team. They tried their best to give away a huge lead but came back in the end. If they build on this game and get back on track, they owe the season to John Kasay. I didn't consider this game a must win for the Colts, but beating your main competition in the division at home is important. And the Bears really took control of the division, since they've beaten all three division opponents in the first three weeks, two of them on the road. Even if they lose next week against the Seahawks they're really still in first place since, for now, they own the tie-breaker advantage against the Vikings. Gould has become a great kicker; I see a close race between him and Kasay for the best kicker in the NFC.
  17. I haven't read the entire thread, but my impression after watching the game is that the Vikings are a good team, likely a Wild Card, but the Bears basically took total control of the division. Playing division teams in the first three weeks, two of them on the road, and going 3-0 is HUGE. If the Bears can beat Seattle next week, I'll start accepting concession speeches from the rest of the teams in the division. :D OK, slight overstatement since it's still early.
  18. I'd bet that you can figure mine out just by looking at the team names. :D
  19. He ran on Wednesday then practiced on Thursday and Friday, so I'd be very surprised if he didn't. Matt Vasgersian just said Smith is playing. And Yahoo confirms that he is active.
  20. Any word yet on whether Steve Smith will play? Enquiring minds (and my fantasy team) want to know. :D
  21. :?: State Park is nowhere near Knoxville. State Park is in Pennsylvania; Knoxville is in Tennessee.
  22. I think you're right. Even after other games started being played on Opening Day I believe the Reds played a day game and the others were night games.
  23. The correct quote, yes. The Dusty quote, no.
  24. I think the general assumption has been that Hendry will have at least one chance to turn things around (especially with the contract extension he signed). However, a current cubs.com article makes me wonder (I realize I may be reading something into this that isn't there due to wishful thinking). The article was mainly about Baker (Hendry reiterated that he'd make his decision on offering Baker an extension within a week of the end of the season). One specific quote caught my eye: The bolded words make me wonder if Hendry feels safe, or if he's considering resigning (or perhaps taking a different position within the organization). Of course, his words could also be interpreted as meaning that he wants to bring Dusty back but he realizes that it would be in the best interests of the organization to get a new manager. It may not have anything to do with his status as GM at all. Still, I thoughtit was an interesting comment worthy of speculation.
  25. You'd only bat him higher a slot or two for the dingers. We all know this. Nobody's expecting him to suddenly start clogging. Zambrano's got 2 dingers? No, he has 6 (tied for the all-time Cub record for a pitcher in a season).
