  1. His surgery comes after Hendry signs him to the longest most expensive contract given out by the Cubs ever. The day after.
  2. With two games left Kansas City leads Tampa Bay by one game for the first pick, and the Cubs are tied with Pittsburgh for third. I'm not sure what the tie-breaker is if they remain tied.
  3. Hey, I'm only behind by 70, and I still have four days to catch up. :D
  4. If he officially retires, no. What could happen if for him to spend the entire season on the 60-day DL, then retire after the season when his contract expires. That way he would be paid but wouldn't count against the 40-man roster. Think Albert Belle.
  5. Thanks for doing another Q & A. It seems a foregone conclusion that Dusty won't be back next year. Do you have any feel for who WILL be the Cubs' manager next year, and do you have any opinion on who you think SHOULD be? Also, do you think Hendry will be under a mandate to produce a winner next year to keep his job beyond 2007? There's been a fair amount of speculation that might be the case.
  6. If he goes to the Sox I'll personally pay all of his moving expenses. :D
  7. The best the Cubs could do now is tie Tampa Bay for the second worst record (and I believe I read earlier in this thread that Tampa Bay has the tie-breaker advantage over the Cubs). Their lead over Pittsburgh for third place is now down to one half game, so they may not even wind up with the worst record in the NL.
  8. That sounds more interesting than a three hour tour. :D
  9. So Dusty doesn't have a monopoly on talking about movable parts. :D
  10. I haven't watched lately either. There are better uses of the free time I have during the week when I'm working, and on weekends I'm watching football rather than baseball. I won't even be watching the season-ending weekend series, as I'll be at a continuing education conference Friday and Saturday and then going to the Carolina Panthers game on Sunday. I may TIVO Sunday's game solely to hear what Len and Bob have to say about looking ahead to next year.
  11. http://bc.images.trb.com/media/graphic/2005-04/16841579.jpg Len Kasper, Broadcaster for the Chicago, has graciously agreed for a third time to answer questions from posters on NSBB! If you would like to send a comment to Len, or if you would like to ask Len a question, feel free to post it here. The deadline for submitting questions is Sunday, Sept. 30 at 10:00 P.M. Central time. Once Len has had an opportunity to answer them, the responses will be posted. This session will be coordinated as in accordance with The NSBB Q & A Guidelines. Thank you to Len for again taking the time to interact with us on such an up close and personal level. In addition, thank you to Len for his references to NSBB both during broadcasts and the WGN Sports Baseball Blog. A special thank you to Len for his help in raising funds for the American Red Cross with his donated 2005 Spring Training Scorecards. As always, thank you to all of you for making NSBB such a wonderful community!
  12. Would you bet a fiddle of gold against your soul? :D
  13. I think it's more likely the other way around. MacPhail is Hendry's boss, so he therefore has the authority to fire Dusty himself if Hendry balked. It is possible that Hendry wanted Baker gone but MacPhail or the Trib said no. That's what I meant when I said maybe the other way around. Hendry's bosses may have been unwilling to eat the remainder of Dusty's contract.
  14. He gave Guzman one start too many this year. If I understand the rule correctly, a pitcher with ten or more starts in a season is not eligible to be kept on the minor league roster when the keeper rosters are set. Guzman has exactly ten starts, which is one too many based on my interpretation of the rule. :x
  15. I think it's more likely the other way around. MacPhail is Hendry's boss, so he therefore has the authority to fire Dusty himself if Hendry balked.
  16. Much of the "credit" for Corey should go to Don Baylor. Because the Cubs were unexpected contenders in 2001, Baylor asked for Corey to be on the big league roster largely to help as a pinch runner when he clearly needed more time in the minors. I would have liked to have seen how good he would have become if he spent all of 2001 in the minors like he should have.
  17. To me the whole thing is depressing. It just points out that the division was there for the taking if the Cubs just had a decent team. If they had the talent from 2003 or 2004 they would have won the division going away. :(
  18. I'd bring Miller back for one year. I think Marshall, Guzman, Marmol, etc. could use a little more seasoning in the minors that they should have gotten this year had the Cubs not needed them before they were really ready to fill in for injured pitchers.
  19. Actually, I don't believe that's true. I'm fairly sure that the slogan originated with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s and 50s. Everybody associates the phrase with the Cubs these days, but just as Hendry steals trends from other teams, Cub fans stole a slogan. :D
  20. And with Dusty gone, he won't even have access to the toothpicks. :D
  21. The Cubs are now mathematically eliminated from the #1 draft pick. If the Cubs lose out and Kansas City wins out, Kansas City would still be a game ahead of the Cubs.
  22. Chances of this being true are less than zero percent. No way is it a conspiracy, because among other things it required rushing pitching prospects that probably would have been better served with more time in the minors (such as Marshall, Marmol, Guzman, etc.) and subjecting them to Dusty's abuse. It also put Hendry's own future in jeopardy. No, if Hendry wanted Dusty gone, as others have pointed out he just could have fired him and perhaps salvaged something from this season. Creative thinking, but in a completely different solar system from any reality.
  23. So the remaining time in Dusty's tenure should be rounded to zero. :D
  24. I'm second in the group overall, but Dolly Parton's Busts is running away with it. Nationally I'm #646 with 1150 total points. 365 points last week, with Favre, Longwell, and the Vikings defense hurting me.
