  1. Whoa; calling them a bunch of jerks is going way overboard. They reacted to a tough situation emotionally rather than logically. That makes them human, not jerks. They shouldn't have skipped practice; I'm not denying that. However, they did all reportedly show up for last night's walk-through. Had they followed through on their threats then maybe stronger criticism would be warranted. However, I don't think they can be faulted for showing support for their coach, even though the way they did so was misguided. I disagree. They could have showed their support any number of ways that would have expressed their frustration but not made them look like petulant children. How about a short statement to the media? A letter? An e-mail? If they can't be trusted to control their emotions (in part, a sign of maturity), then they could have spoken through their parents/guardians. The long and the short of it is: they acted stupidly and aligned themselves with a cheater. I stand by my comments. I'm not disputing that what they did was wrong. What I am disputing is that letting their emotions get the best of them doesn't make them jerks. We're all human, and we all do stupid things at times and react emotionally rather than rationally. That doesn't make us jerks.
  2. Good move for both parties. The Bears get Grossman back without being tied to him long-term in case he doesn't have a good year next year, and Grossman has an opportunity to earn a big payday beginning in 2009 (whether it's with the Bears or elsewhere). A win-win situation.
  3. No, a player with little talent killing the Cubs is business as usual, not weird.
  4. I dont mind that. I would miss Gallagher. I am not sold on Veal or Cedeno. The Fontenot era was fun while it lasted, but bye-bye! And  on Payton. I don't like him at all on this team. It seems like you're contradicting yourself. You wouldn't mind trading for Payton, but you don't like him on the team. What do you want the Cubs to do with him after trading for him if you don't want him on the team?
  5. The thread you mentioned gets moved to the FAQ forum during the offseason, then moved back to Baseball Discussions and stickied for the season. I'm the one who has updated it in previous years, based on information from the media guide. Once I orde and receive one I'll update the list for any changes and move it back to Baseball Discussions. As far as visiting teams staying in Chicago, last year the Cardinals and Giants stayed at the Westin Hotel (909 N. Michigan Ave.); all other teams stayed at the Ritz-Carlton (160 E. Pearson St.).

  7. It's pretty common for boosters of a large program to donate large amounts of money just to pay a buyout of a coach they don't like. If I recall some IU boosters offered to pay to buy out Davis' contract too about a year before he was finally let go. Fequently I think the idea is that it's the boosters who most want the coach gone, so they're willing to pay for what they want. Otherwise the coach may not be fired because the school would be unwilling to pay a former coach as well as the current coach.
  8. I disagree completely. I think the university slapped the players in the face with the way they handled the situation the last 24 hours. It put the players into a horrible position with the way it was dragged out and the meeting last night (which was both unnecessary and put the players into further media bombardment). I think both sides should just say mistakes were made and move on with the full squad tomorrow night. At most, make them come off of the bench. I don't see the players being left behind. They shouldn't have missed practice, but there's plenty of precedence for only benching a player for the first half for missing practice. These are extenuating circumstances, so certainly they wouldn't be punished MORE than many others who commit the same infraction.
  9. Sampscum resigns. He will be paid a $750,000 buyout, $550,000 paid by an anonymous donor and $200,000 by the university. In return, he agrees not to pursue any wrongful termination suit. Dakich is now interim coach; McCallum has been promoted to assistant head coach (some of the details I mentioned come from an espn.com article rather than the article I linked to). Sampson is reportedly meeting with the players tonight and urging them to continue to play.
  10. Of course; then they change their name to the Miami Rays. After all, we already know that there will be an AL team in Miami by 2015, since the Cubs will beat Miami in the World Series.
  11. Foster was waived on Thursday. I saw that on the Raleigh CBS station.
  12. In an unusual occurrance a game was rained out. Thursday's Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech ACC matchup was called because of a leaky roof, with a forecast of 2-3 inches of rain. It isn't yet known whether the game can be rescheduled.
  13. Solution: Sign Moses as an offensive lineman. He'd part the defense. :D
  14. There is a way to get around it. You can right-click on the link, then click "Open in new window" or "Open in new tab." It's not as convenient as having it automatically open in a new window, but it's something that works.
  15. He had major arm problems (I forget whether it was shoulder or elbow) that derailed his once-promising career. I don't recall a broken foot; you may be thinking of Dopirak there.
  16. Ask the NSBB lol blogger. He's undoubtedly counted it.
  17. Here is a page with daily updates and photos, with links to other photos and video. It's part of the Boys of Spring web page, run by Hohokam PA announcer Tim Sheridan (CubsAZ's real identity). The entire site is devoted specifically to Cubs' Spring Training.
  18. Oops, I just learned something the hard way. I was editing the poll choices to remove the duplicate listing for Theriot (the duplicate listing hadn't received any votes). Apparently editing the choices deletes all previous votes and resets the poll. So let the voting begin again.
  19. Fukudome. Welcome to the big leagues.
  20. I remember once WGN rebroadcast the Phillies game, with an edit. Spliced onto the end of the game was footage of Jack Brickhouse calling an Ernie Banks home run, and the Cubs won 24-23. I don't recall specifics because I read abut it as opposed to actually watching it.
  21. The player from Purdue you're thinking of is Chadd Blasko.
  22. I noticed that. I cut him down to size.
  23. Guzman is out most, if not all, year recovering from TJS.
  24. I think it will be Dakich, at least for the rest of this year. I think he may have been brought in as an assistant specifically for this possibility. The violations discovered during the offseason may have made seem evident that a change during the season might be needed, so they wanted to have a replacement on board.
