  1. The idea I've mentioned before (and still like) is to have three pitchers rotating among two spots in the rotation. If we assume Gallagher, Marshall, and Dempster as the three, that would mean one time through the rotation Gallagher and Marshall would start, with Dempster available for long relief. The next time Gallagher and Dempster would start with Marshall in long relief, and finally Dempster and Marshall would start with Gallagher in long relief. This would keep their innings down for the year but still allow them to build stamina within games (as well as allow them to pitch long enough to qualify for a win, which is important to the players even if we recognize that wins aren't important).
  2. I really like the irony that the Padres are paying Edmonds to help beat them. :D
  3. Lou should forbid Marmol from even dressing tonight and require him to sit in the dugout in street clothes. That way there would be NO temptation to use him.
  4. It wasn't a formal offer, just a PM exchange. I asked at one point if you'd be interested in Santana instead of Harang in exchange for a closer and you weren't. And despite my ribbing you about that I really couldn't blame you at the time, because it wasn't clear yet that Santana was really having a good season as opposed to a couple of starts.
  5. I agree. The Cubs have built up enough of a cushon they can afford to lose a game or two if that's what it takes to give Marmol a little rest. They're nowhere even close to being in any must-win situations. They'll be many more losses before the season ends anyway; nothing wrong with one or two of them being to give Marmol some rest.
  6. The only reason I can think of for wanting another reliever today is that Lou's worried about a short outing for Marquis. Simple solution for that: Replace Marquis in the rotation. I don't see Hoffpauir going down. It would be hard to send him down when Ward returns (does he even still have any options remaining?). I really think it's bye bye Fontenot for now. If he then wants to cut back to 12 pitchers he could bring Patterson up for his double-switches until Fontenot is eligible to come back.
  7. I drafted the sham closer in both of my Yahoo leagues. In one of those leagues I also drafted Marmol.
  8. I'm afraid of it too but I'm not going around calling Lou one of the worst managers in the league when we have the best record in the league. In all baseball, not just in the league.
  9. CUBS are actually 3 games below .500 on the road (10-13), but your point is well taken, just the same. Make that 2 games below.
  10. Lieber's numbers are misleading because they include his one start. As a long reliever he's been very good. And I'd venture to guess he'd be good as a starter given another chance. Replacing him after one start was just too knee-jerk. He'd be an improvement over Marquis. I disagree. I don't think it was a knee-jerk reaction, but rather recognition of how important he's been as a long reliever. As a starter he'd probably only be able to go five most of the time, resulting in taxing the bullpen every fifth game. I think he's right where he can help the Cubs the most.
  11. http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/01/deal-or-no-deal.jpg No deal, Howie.
  12. Good start for me, up by nearly 40 with 5 pitching starts remaining apiece. Arroyo's -10 was nice.
  13. Bad non-trade for Adam: Rejected trade of Ervin Santana for a closer when I proposed it. :D
  14. I'm pretty sure what Hendry offered was a club option for a second year, not a guaranteed second year. That would have protected the Cubs, not Prior.
  15. There's a thread about it in General Baseball Discussions.
  16. I read the bold and immediately thought whaaaaaa??? They don't have a rookie in their rotation, and surely they aren't replacing one of their starters right now... What Steve was TRYING to say is that this is the 7th Cardinals rookie (position or pitcher) to make their debut this season. Way to just completely butcher the facts Steve. Maybe he uses "pitcher" to refer to any player the way some people use "Coke" to mean any soda. :D
  17. Lieber's numbers are misleading because they include his one start. As a long reliever he's been very good.
  18. Earlier in his career, yes. Not so much in recent years. Maybe so, but either way, I'm just glad to have him on this team, even if his numbers aren't where they normally should be. His defense is, IMHO, very valuable for this team. I wasn't saying he shouldn't be on the team; he definitely should be. I was just saying that he hasn't been a slow starter in recent years as he was earlier in his career (through 2004).
  19. The Cubs tried to get Prior to agree to a one-year contract with a team option for a second year, but Prior wouldn't accept the option. So the Cubs chose not to formally tender a contract, because they didn't want to pa Prior to rehabilitate for a half year or longer only to have him walk at the end of the year. They wanted some assurance of a return on their investment, and Prior wouldn't give it. So technically it was the Cubs' decision, but really it was Prior's.
  20. How about Mike Harkey?Another good analogy. And although he hadn't had major league success yet when he got injured, Lance Dickson is another. None of these guys that have been listed were as good as Prior. I'm not saying they were as good as Prior. I'm saying they were similar in that they were good (or, in the case of Dickson, showed promise of being good) but then had promising careers ended because of arm injuries. Harkey is a bit different because his own stupidity contributed to his downfall (he tore up his knee when he decided he was Ozzie Smih and tried to do a cartwheel on the field).

  22. In after move to Cubs' Discussions.

  24. No. He's out for the year after undergoing TJS. At the time he was on the roster of the Sox' AAA team.
