  1. and they will next year? No, they won't next year either. But, by keeping him in the minors for the first month of the season, they delay his free agency by one year. One month of bad ticket sales is better than a whole season of bad ticket sales. Just like the Cubs did with Kerry Wood in 1998 (among many, many other instances). I remember at the time that one AL manager conceded the World Series to the Cubs before the season began (obviously tongue-in-cheeck). He said that if the Cubs had five starters better than Wood was at the time there was no way anybody could beat them out.
  2. That makes it all worthwhile.
  3. Former Cub farmhand Ricky Nolasco pitched 7 no-hit innings in Sunday's Spring Training game against the Tigers. He faced the minimum of 21 batters over 7 innings, giving up a walk and hitting a batter, both erased on double plays. Two relief pitchers each pitched one hitless inning to complete the no-no.
  4. That was rude to not let Andy have this one. Good point, I'm sorry. God, that was fun. Jarrett and Green were on the team that went 24-7 two years ago and went to the WNIT, and I know how sweet that must've been for them. I'm still digesting that. And dew, Tennessee had never missed the Sweet 16. :D Also the first time any defending champion (not just Tennessee) lost in the first round. Ball State definitely made history (not bad for their first tournament appearance ever).
  5. I think he'd actually make more sense as the wildcard for the second half of the season, since he's going to start the year in AAA.
  6. Another scoreless inning for Guz. Maybe he's turning it around.
  7. Maybe during Spring Training the issue is how close you are to Florida or Arizona (whichever those teams train in), not Houston or Cincinnati.
  8. You should charge the Orioles a commission if your information helps Hill improve. :D
  9. In a few years when he is done with the Reds I think you could play a Dusty Mad Lib with that line... Dusty brought _________ back the next ________________ and ________ blew out his elbow, and he is just now getting back to where he can pitch again Insert Jonny Cueto, Mark Prior, Edinson Vlozquez, Aaron Harang, Kerry Wood You need to replace elbow with another blank, so it could be replaced by shoulder when appropriate.
  10. As I was renewing a couple of sponsorships last night I thought that, since several NSBB members sponsor pages on these sites, it might be worth a sticky thread to post links to them for other NSBB members to see. I mainly intend this for Cubs sponsorships, but feel free to post sponsorships of non-Cubs that you think might be of interest. I have two: 1959 Cubs Team Page (Baseball Reference) Carlos Marmol Player Page (Baseball Cube)
  11. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b137/Hornkohl/Hell.jpg Good ole Hell, Michigan. I'd forgotten about that.
  12. $1,000,000 for picking every game correctly or $10,000 for finishing first nationally (based on Yahoo's default scoring system without bonus points for picking upsets). There's no prize for winning the group, just bragging rights.
  13. Chiasson was released by the Orioles yesterday.
  14. You're right. The end of the world could come tonight.
  15. And I think that's accomplished by the system I'm using for the Second Chance contest, which is a flat one-point bonus for picking an upset regardless of the difference in seedings. We won't have the situation where somebody can have more bonus points than points for correct picks (in the end I don't think it will be that way in this contest either, but time will tell).
  16. Because he will not DEFINITELY be the owner; he will PROBABLY be the owner. Until a deal is finalized and approved by MLB owners there's always the chance it could fall apart. It's not his team yet.
  17. He's the second Cubs manager I remember (Leo Durocher was the first). The first managerial change since I started following the Cubs was when Durocher was fired and replaced by Lockman during the 1972 season (very shortly after that, I believe during the same season, Durocher was hired to manage the Astros). At first I was impressed with Lockman because the Cubs won more during the remainder of the season and finished 2nd with a winning record, but that turned out to be the last winning season for over a decade, so that turned me against him. I don't think the decline was really his fault; I think it had more to do with dismantling the nucleus of the team. Since I started following the Cubs in 1969 I saw four consecutive winning seasons, and at the time I didn't realize that was the aberration and losing seasons was the norm. I learned quickly.
  18. It's obvious that different people have different opinions about the scoring system. That's always going to be the case when there are different options to choose from; not everybody is going to agree. I still feel that rewarding risk-taking adds to the fun by encouraging people to pick upsets, but as I mentioned earlier in this thread the system of tying the number of bonus points to the seed differential may have been going a bit overboard. So for the second chance contest I'm sticking with having a bonus for picking upsets, but using the option where it's a straight one-point bonus rather than depending on the seed differential. I think that would eliminate the issue of some people having more bonus points than correct pick points while preserving the reward for picking upsets. And as I've mentioned before the overall (as opposed to group) standings and cash awards don't use bonus points, so people can still see where they stand based solely on correct picks and brag about it. Also, I think the effect of bonus points will decrease as the tournament progresses. Each subsequent round the number of points per correct pick doubles, while the bonus points remain the same. Also, there normally are fewer big upsets as the tournament moves on. So what initially may appear to be an excessive effect of bonus points will likely work itself out in the end.
  19. Realistic but not-so-bold prediction: The Cubs will neither go 162-0 nor 0-162. :D
  20. I'm using a different scoring system for the Second Chance contest since this one doesn't seem too popular (sometimes you don't know how things work out until you try). I still like the idea of a bonus for correctly picking an upset (it rewards taking chances), but for the Second Chance contest I'm using the option where there's a flat one-point bonus for correctly picking a lower seed rather than basing the bonus on seed differential. And keep in mind that, for the cash prizes, scoring is based on Yahoo's default scoring without bonuses. The system with bonuses for this league is for bragging rights only; nobody's actually losing money over it. Speaking of the Second Chance contest, it's now open. I copied the membership from this contest so people in the current contest should receive an automatic invitation to join by clicking on the link without needing to enter a group ID and password. Anybody who missed out on the original contest that would like to participate in the Second Chance contest can do so using group ID 8501 and password gocubs. And BTW, I LOVE the system for the current contest because it has me in first place for now. :P
  21. Do it yesterday. I'd take a top starter over a top reliever any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

  23. Former Cubs' manager Whitey Lockman died Tuesday at 82. The death wasn't reported until today. Lockman spent most of his playing career with the Giants, scoring on Bobby Tompson's "shot heard around the world" in 1951. He took over from Leo Durocher as Cubs' manager during the 1972 season and managed the Cubs through part of 1974.
  24. Koskie will decide on his future by tomorrow.
  25. But they lost more tournament games than IU. :D
