Never thought I would be this excited to have Alex Smith back on the field. First play a 17 yard completion to Crabtree. Smith might not be a good QB but at least he can stretch the field. Hill dumps it off every time.

1 yard of offense with 5 minutes into the 2nd quarter and 18 penalty yards. Jimmy Raye has got to be the worst OC. His plays are incredibly predictable because he does the same thing every possession. Two inside runs followed by pass to try and get first down.

49ers are looking like crap again. Just like last season. Offense can't do crap which causes the defense to constantly be on the field.

I know man. I have no idea how you guys get prepared to face QB's like Stephen Garcia, [expletive] version of Jevan Snead, Mike Hartline, Tyson Lee, Larry Smith... I hear fans from everywhere else complain about how boring Big Ten games are. Then when Iowa has a night game I can watch a bunch of SEC games during the day. And I see a bunch of backwards hot garbage on offense. Then I see Iowa beat Florida in '03, LSU in '04, lose to a much better Florida team by one score on a crazy call in '05 and destroy South Carolina in '08. And every time I wonder why those athletes don't look as amazing as everyone tells me they are and why Iowa isn't so overmatched. Yeah I really hate when SEC fans say the Big Ten is boring. For one i like defense for two their offenses are no better. SEC ugly football that's low scoring and defense-oriented= awesome defense with athletes everywhere Big Ten football in the same mold= terrible offense Big 12 football that was high scoring= horrible defense Pac-10= soft They have it made. Ain't no one can play that ball like dem boys in the souf At least here in Louisiana the high school football stuff is highly overrated too. I was excited to be covering high school football down here thinking it would be a big thing. The games have a much lower attendance than in Indiana and almost everyone just sits around socializing barely paying attention to the game. People in Indiana don't tend to pay a whole lot of attention either but from my observation they cheer a lot more in Indiana.

yeah it does seem to be a down year for the Heisman. Then again I think that has a lot to do with having two former winners and one that put up worthy enough numbers back this season and all three not doing nearly as well.

I would rather trust my o-line to block than a kicker to make a 44-yard FG, especially at the college level. Most NFL kickers will make a 44 yarder a large majority of the time. College kickers are the exact opposite.

Nice! On a different note I now have hopes of a bowl game for Purdue. I have a feeling I'm just going to be let down.

Davis may very well make all-Big Ten after the season but I asked who would be preseason all-Big Ten. I highly doubt Davis makes the preseason team.

Mike Davis is not first team. I can see Battle on there but not Davis. He is a decent scorer and good rebounder but does little else. Doesn't block shots, doesn't get steals, can't shoot from out ... etc. Mike Davis actually is a very good shooter up to about 16 feet. Not everyone needs to shoot threes. I'm also basing a lot of this off of assuming that Hummel will mis more time again as a back injury is one that tends to linger for a long time and at most points last year he didn't look anything like the player he was his frosh year. We'll have to see. He played this summer for Painter in some World University tournament and had no issues. I read an article that Hummel said he has been cleared to remove the back brace but keeps wearing it because he can get back checked and not even feel it so its like protection. I'm guessing Painter will limit him some in the easy non-conference schedule so that he can play Hummel 30-35 minutes a game once we get into the Big Ten. edit: oh and last off season he got the bacteria poisoning from the tomatoes in California and lost 25 pounds because of it. He didn't have to deal with that this season.

I just don't see either QB excelling there since Mangini doesn't appear to have faith in either. The franchise would be far better off at this point trading one of the two and drafting a QB. If they don't go QB, I think they have to trade down. They have so many needs and, in all honesty, moving just outside the top 10 and focusing on Dez Bryant might be their best option other than going the QB route. They simply won't be willing to drop 8-10 mil a year on another QB. They already dropped alot on Anderson and quite a bit on Quinn. If they don't take a QB, they should trade down. They might should trade down anyway and then take a QB in the second or third round (Devlin, Hiller, etc). They should trade down to 10-15 and then take a QB. Difference between top 5 and 10-15 is massive.

Any predictions on preseason all Big Ten? I would say Johnson and Hummel would both likely be on there along with Evan Turner. After that I would say Manny Harris is a near lock and Kalin Lucas will probably make it because you have to have a MSU player. Talor Battle deserves it but I doubt he makes first team. I highly doubt it. Molock is in the 2012 class, Randle the 2011. Randle's class is the important one because that is when Hummel, Moore and Johnson all leave. We need to get some scorers in that class that can contribute right away. Also Painter is the one recruiting Randle and he only goes for the top recruits that he wants most. I would be pleasantly surprised if Johnson is back for his senior season. True but got to see how the season goes first. He didn't have too great of season until the end when he stepped up big time. If he picks up where he left off then yeah he's gone for sure.

A tendency to throw a few picks, even if you characterize it as not to a detrimental point, doesn't really compare well with McNabb. Isn't he one of the least picked off QBs ever? I wouldn't think so. McNabb throws about 6-13 picks a year and usually has about a 2:1 or a little better TD:INT ratio. 6-13 picks isn't a lot by any means. His ratio isn't as great as some of the others because he normally has 23-27 TD's but he rarely throws picks. He was somewhat inaccurate early in his career so the Locker comparisons are pretty good. I think McNabb took six seasons to have a completion percentage over 60. I didn't say a lot of picks, but the ratio is rarely that good. I think the ratio would improve if the offense was a bit more explosive and he had better receivers. Yeah he has actually only had 4 seasons with at least 20 TD's which was very surprising to me. As far as ratio goes coming into this season McNabb had 104 more TD's than INT's. For comparison Brady was 111 coming into the season.

I think Bud Adams does want VY to start. However, the Titans won because of Vince in 2007 as much as the Cubs won games because of Shawn Estes in 2003. In 2007, Vince put up this line: 62.3 completion % 9:17 TD:INT 71.1 rating The completion percentage is nice and his 4.2 y/c rushing helped quite a bit too, but the TD:INT ratio is not conducive to winning football games. The reason they went 10-6 that year is because of a running game that was #5 in yards and #5 in scoring and a top 10 rated defense. They won 13 games in 2008 for the same reason, with Kerry at QB. The answer to turning things around isn't Vince Young, though I still believe he can be a productive NFL QB. I realize all that. I actually dislike VY a lot. Always thought he was overrated. However he did that in his second year never having time to sit and learn. He has had a season and half to learn and could probably do better than that now. Collins is also on pace for 21 interceptions so even if he doesn't do better than his second year it would still be on par with what Collins is doing.

He is also 29th in passing attempts yet 116th in interceptions. BTW Gartard leads the list for least intercepted. So in QB's with at least 2000 attempts McNabb leads the way.
