  1. If there is a 3-way deal brewing, there's a good chance that it's the Braves. Buster Olney reported that the Braves were interested in Arroyo. Saltamachia could be the chip they'd be moving, but I doubt that the Cubs could end up with Griffey and Salty. The Reds wouldn't be getting enough in that deal.
  2. Top prospect(s) and a proven pre-arbitration ML regular. The Cubs don't have what it would take.
  3. Depending on the details, it might not be the best thing for the future of the franchise. But Hendry needs this trade. It's probably his last significant act as the GM of the Cubs. If it works out it possibly saves his job under new ownership. Whether the Reds have any interest is debatable. I'd say it's even unlikely. However, I'd be surprised if Hendry isn't working on it. 4. It's 20 million (of which the Trib would be paying $4 mil.) if they don't exercise the '09 option: ~$4 mil. this year, $12.5 mil. next year, and a $4mil. buyout. $32.5 mil. if they picked up the option. I'd hope that the Reds would be picking up some part as well (or taking on Jones or Eyre in the deal). While it's no slam-dunk, that's a much less significant commitment than signing Z to a mult-year contract.
  5. I have nothing to base this on other than a hunch, but I think it's going to happen. I think Griffey would make the Cubs a legitimate WS contender, but throwing both Pie and Murton in the deal is a steep price considering Griffey's age and contract - particularly so if it involves any significant pitching prospect (e.g., Gallagher or Veal). Well, if it is a 3 team deal, then it would be likely that a prospect would be heading back to the Cubs from this 3rd team. I also would hope that if the Cubs send both Pie and Murton that they shouldn't have to send one of their top pitching prospects, and they get at least one mid-level prospect back in the deal from someone along with Griffey. Agreed, but given the state of the Reds starting pitching and Arroyo rumored in the deal, you'd think they'd have to be getting some pitching in return. My guess is that Murton or Pie would be going to the 3rd team because the Reds have Hamilton, Dunn, Freel, and a couple of decent outfield prospects.

  7. Murton and Griffey changing dugouts? :D (I wish)
  8. I'd have no problem dealing Hill or Marshall if it netted a significant upgrade at C, SS, CF or RF. A 5th starter is only valuable for the balance of the regular season. I agree that Gallagher is a bit raw, but in my opinion the difference between an impact bat vs. one of the holes over the next eight weeks is greater than the difference between Hill/Marshall and Gallagher. A weak 5th starter might tax the pen a bit, but you've got Sept. callups to offset that some.
  9. Talk where? In the media? By the fans? That doesn't mean anything. It's pretty simply. Krivsky is going to get what HE wants for Dunn and Griffey or he will hang onto them into the offseason and probably into next season. Dunn's price tag is cheaper then Griffey's, but both are going to cost you something nice. Either somebody is going to step up and make a deal, or nothing will happen. I'm not sure if I like the strategy or not, but that's what is going to happen. if the cubs and reds were gonna make a deal for griffey, what would you as a fan want back from the cubs? Murton & Marshall
  10. From what that says it seems like a winner will be picked around the world series but the winner and Zell (or whoever) reaching a deal could take a little longer (?). not if Zell buys the whole thing, and then sells the team off to someone new. Could take all winter Zell isn't buying anything. The Trib is redeeming stock with $1 bil. in cash, the proceeds of the sale of assets and lots of financing. The whole Tribune deal hinges on having enough cash to cover the debt per the loan covenants. Having that cash is dependent on selling off a significant block of assets. Foremost among those assets is the $1 bil. or so the Cubs will bring. Zell and the Tribune's management have stong incentives to make the Cubs sale happen on time.
  11. If you're the Casino, bookmaker, whatever, you're interest is in weighting the odds of Outcomes A & B so that you get equal action on both sides. You take the vig and walk away happy. I think Dirt Dog's got it right. Baseball's too random for one ump (or even the crew) to assure the outcome. The Black Sox scandal allegedly involved most of the starters and even then the fix was almost blown.
  12. I just hope Kerry didn't wake up that morning and decide to ignore the pain. Hard to believe that he could hit 95 if that were the case though.
  13. Nice job. His stuff wasn't great today, but he battled.
  14. What? It's a given that runner will come around to score.. If that were the case, this game would be 9-2.
  15. Bottom of the order and he was under 90 pitches.
  16. Make Juan throw strikes. He couldn't in Milwaukee.
  17. Nah, Hill will pitch to the bottom of the order. Short leash though, (I hope)
  18. Weak Links Catcher (Soto for Hill would help but it's still weak) Bullpen (Wood+Guzman for Eyre+Petrick) 3rd & 5th OF (Murton/Floyd Platoon in RF, Pie or Lofton in CF to replace JJ+Pagan) Bench/SS (Cedeno) Overall: SLG - Dunn or Griffey for Murton, JJ, and spare parts. Fair point. But really, 3 of those aren't "weaknesses" they're just mismanagements, according to you at least . . . we have the players to plug into the roster, we're just not doing it. And that is different from years in the past. Agreed. Which points out the weakest link of all: GM
  19. Perphaps he's taken the fact that he's been proven untradeable personally?
  21. Neifi only scores .019 of the time (usually on an error).
  22. Tribune will go private before the sale is completed. Therefore that takes care of this little problem. Actually it doesn't take care of the problem. The Trib will be owned by a Trust on behalf of Tribune employees. The Trustee (an independent institution) has a fiduciary duty to the beneficiaries of the Trust (i.e., the employees). If Cuban submits a significantly better bid, MLB will be in a tough position - particularly if the details leak. Considering many of those employees are members of the press, I wouldn't want to be the Trustee or Selig if MLB disqualifies the highest bid.
  23. He must have had a CRAZY June because the caption said "Jason Kendall, who is hitting .297 in his last 25 games, is expected to be in uniform Tuesday. (Getty)". I'm willing to give our scout and our excellent hitting coach a month to see if they made a good choice on Kendall. All he does it hit singles I take it from people complaining about his weak OPS+. But I have a bit of faith in our scouting department. Look at how most of our FA's turned out this year. Yeah, he went NUTS in June: June OPS/ML catchers (Rank) Kendall .758 (19th) Bowen .733 (24th) Barrett .714 (28th)
  24. Those saying Kendall has been decent the last month and a half should take a look at his July. It's just as putrid as his April/May: .229/.229/.286/.514 (yes, 0 walks in 35 ABs).
  25. It's a nothing deal involving a big name. - If the Cubs have a trading chip that completes the big deadline deal, Blevins wasn't it. - Blevins wasn't going to see Wrigley anytime soon with Ohman, Cotts, Eyre, and Rapada around. - The $1-$1.5 mil (net of the Barrett trade) isn't going to prevent the deadline deal that really makes a difference. - This doesn't ruin Soto's ceiling (a serviceable backup C). - Kendall's absymal numbers so far this year aren't significantly more abysmal than Hill/Bowen. The only way this isn't a big nothing trade is if somehow Kendall reverts to something close to his career numbers. That'd be something of a miracle considering his decline over the last three seasons. Hopefully Hendry does the right thing and deals or DFAs Koyie Hill rather then sending Soto down. CFP
