  1. Why would Canning accept a counter of just the Cubs if he bid $650 mil. for the club and the park? I don't see that happening. And if the difference in offers is as large as $350 mil., the Trib and the Trustee are asking for a lawsuit (brought by the employees and/or the Department of Labor). Well, if Canning doesn't accept the counter he basically removes himself from the running. Selig then would no longer have a crony among the bidders. Which is exactly what I expect would happen if the difference in bids is that large. Selig's influence can only determine the buyer if there isn't a significant difference in the bids. I doubt that any bidder, no matter how cozy with Selig, is going to accept just the ballclub for what they thought the ballclub and the park were worth.

  3. I agree. And my guess is that Marshall will be heading somewhere for a bat and the Cubs will fill the 5th starter job among Gallagher/Mateo/Prior/et. al., with the expectation that Samardzija could be brought up sometime during the season.
  4. I think the antitrust exemption would allow for MLB to get the owner it wants, but that fiduciary duty is going to be a hell of a sticking point. I don't know if other teams have been sold under these circumstances before, but I'm willing to guess the antitrust exemption would not prevent MLB from getting slapped with a potentially successful lawsuit for interfering with that duty. As the article mentions, this is an unusual situation. I'd have to look into it more, though. Fiduciary duty should indeed be a sticky point in this case. Fiduciary duty to the shareholders, and the fiduciary duty of the Trustee of the ESOP which owns Tribune on behalf of its employees. Yes MLB has the power to block the sale. But the Tribune's board and the ESOP Trustee have an obligation to seek the highest bid. They should reject any inferior bid regardless of the probability that MLB would approve the sale.
  5. Good grief. Leave Trachsel in Houston please. Marshall, Gallagher, Piggs, and Hart would all be better options at this point.
  6. Nice start, but my bet is it takes at least six runs to win this one.
  7. As long as the Cubs upgrade at least one bat (e.g., Tejada, Griffey, Burrell) - yes, Pie should be the CF next year.
  8. I like a Burrell trade scenario. It isn't a long-term comittment, but he brings a lot of OBP and some power. The Phillies would be expecting to eat some salary, can afford to shed some offense and desperately need some pitching. I'd ask the Phillies to pick from the following: Two of J. Jones/S. Eyre/R. Dempster/J. Marquis/H. Blanco (Philly must take at least $10 mil. in contracts). PLUS Marshall or Guzman for Burrell + prospect (quality depends on other players selected). If Murton had to be offered in the deal I'd agree, but I'd ask for a quality prospect in return. My guess is they'd go with Eyre, Dempster, & Marshall with the intention of moving Dempster or Brett Myers back to the rotation. This shores up the Phillies bullpen and gives them a couple of starters who are likely to be upgrades over Eaton, Garcia & Lieber while cutting a few million in payroll. Theriot Soriano Ramirez Lee DeRosa/Fontenot Burrell Pie Soto/Blanco Bench- Ward, Blanco. Fontenot, Murton, Jones, Patterson (Or a similar deal involving whatever it takes to pry Griffey from Cincy.) CFP
  9. Provided that the Cubs avoid a meltdown in St. Louis and win most of the games they should against HOU/CIN/PIT/FLA, they probably still win the division. Milwaukee's last ten days are about as tough as they get (all teams competing for a WC or division spot). St. Louis' remaining schedule is also much tougher than the Cubs'. CFP
  10. It's a difficult comparison because there's such a dramatic difference offense vs. defense. I'd rather have the Cubs' talent down the stretch. I'd rather have the Brewers talent over the next three years. The Brewer's flaws should be easier to fix. They're younger and have less money committed. They need four or five decent arms (mostly in the pen). The flaws in the Cubs offense are found up and down the lineup. Upgrading one or two bats does little to solve the problem. And the fact that their strongest bats are near or past their prime doesn't bode well beyond next season. Moreover, the young hitters in the Cubs lineup probably don't have the upside potential to be as good as those who'll be declining over the next 3-4 seasons (w/ the possible exception of Pie). CFP
  11. The Bucs are about to work their way into the lousy Cardinals pen. Don't count that one as over.
  12. We need some runs here. The LA bullpen is a lot better than Penny right now.
  13. Wow. Seriously stupid move. Who here as a September call up wouldn't be at the park an hour before you're expected?
  14. I hope everyone brought a nice book to read between pitches. The over/under on the game time is 3:42. (It'd be 4:12 if the Cubs could manage more than 4 pitches/PA.)
  15. Omar Vizquel wins. Vizquel is definitely overrated. But Ozzie and Vizquel have about the same career OPS+ (87/84). Omar had more hits, more HRs, and he won't sniff the HOF. The defense alone isn't enough to justify the difference.
  16. Tom Skilling and/or localized effects of global warming. Then Rawlings/MLB. Then Gerald Perry. Or maybe it's just a crappy year for Jacque and Cliff and injuries to Soriano/Lee/Ramirez?
  17. Ozzie Smith Alfonso Soriano
  18. Z's good for at least one more. My guess is Marmol/Demp or Wood/Wuertz depending on the situation.
