The teams in the central as of today are 8 over against the east and 5 over against the west. From a quick scan, there is no other division in baseball that is over .500 against both of the other two divisions. I could be wrong because I just did quick mental math, but that would say that relative to the rest of their own league, the NL Central is, as of right now as good (and competitive) as any division in baseball. I would still say that the AL East is better of course, but when compared to the rest of the AL and also when looking at the division top to bottom, that division has weaknesses of course. Of course, these numbers have to be taken with a grain of salt. Not a lot of games have been played by certain teams against certain divisions (Astros for example are 7-2 against the West, which is our difference maker), but it is what we have for this discussion. Total wins certainly is not a useful stat because the NL Central would then always be the best and the AL West the worst.
