It very well could have been, but I would have to wonder, why? What is to be gained? If he said that, would it drive down the price of Bradley (or other F.A.'s), how would it change the things with Peavy? Would Towers have said, look I know your payroll is tight, so I will cut my player requests in return so you take this guy off my hands and I don't have to pay him? While it could have been a red herring as well, I fail to see the point of why he would have done that. Agreed. I don't see why he would say it as a diversion. If he did, wouldn't he have done all these things over the course of the past few weeks? It's all too conspicuous that he's (presumably) signed 2 free agents, traded one of our pitchers, shopping DeRosa around (presumably), and restarted trade talks for Peavy all within 24 hours. I think they found an owner, and it sounds as if they gave Hendry the green light to get some deals done
