    Jacoby Ellsbury is not that good. He's a .300 hitter who only manages a .350 OBP and he steals lots of bases and plays bad center field defense. Sound familiar?

    By who? The media? Number of times John Lackey has been in the top 10 of Cy Young voting: 1 You convinced me to look him up. I was shocked at what I found. Without looking, I could have sworn his stats would have had him up there among the elite prior to his injury, but he really only has had one REALLY decent season. Exactly. He's not that great. He's not bad by any means, but I don't think he's anywhere near worthy a $16.5 million a year contract. Especially when you factor in health. But like Derwood said about the Red Sox working out some sort of injury protection clause it sounds like the health factor won't be an issue for them. Even during his "Cy Young caliber" season he didn't really have an "elite" year, but I for one always hear his name mentioned in the same breath as one of the best pitchers in baseball, when he's really not

    By who? The media? Well yeah. He's widely considered the Angels ace of the last 3 years, and SportsCenter has covered his injuries as well as his free agency like he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. He's a #1 pitcher for a major market team who had a Cy Young caliber season followed by some injury plagued seasons, so they wonder if he'll regain his Cy Young caliber form.

    I agree that his past two seasons shouldn't warrant that contract. 5 years? Maybe, based on reputation alone... but for that ridiculous amount? Eh, not so much. This is a fun game. It's called Which of these stats belongs to John Lackey and which one belongs to Gavin Floyd. Both are combined stats from 08 and 09 (stats rounded to nearest hundredth of a decimal)... aaaaaaaaand GO! Statline 1: 117 ERA+ | 1.25 WHIP | 4.27 FIP Statline 2: 118 ERA+ | 1.25 WHIP | 4.13 FIP One of those stat lines is worth $16.5 million a year, and the other is... well, Gavin Floyd. fangraphs has floyd as being worth a combined $31.3 million combined over the last 2 years And John Lackey has been considered to be Cy Young caliber while Gavin Floyd is... well, Gavin Floyd. It wasn't a knock against Gavin Floyd, I was making a point that Lackey's media hype has led him to a very lucrative contract where he's expected to produce similarly to guys like Greinke or Sabathia, and instead he's producing like Gavin Floyd. Not a bad thing, per se, but I feel Lackey is vastly overpaid because he's still riding the coattails of his great 2007 when he has been producing at a lower quality while being an injury risk the last two.

    I'm just gonna ignore all rumors until it's done and official. Every update on MLBTR has new players in, old players out, then oldp layers back in going to a different team along with new players headed back... I can't tell who IS going where except Halladay to Philly and Lee to Seattle

    I'm not so sure about that, especially since it now appears Drabek is in the deal. Eww, yeah. MLBTR says that Happ and Blanton took physicals so they might be part of the deal as well. Lee, Happ, Blanton, and Drabek for Halladay? The missing players involved are making this thing exciting

    Few other pitchers noted there include Anthony Reyes and Scott Olsen. Why are the two consecutive years of low HR/FB rates the year after his first full season the aberration and not the norm? Because this season when he was partially injured he regressed to his rookie year performance whgere he was merely mediocre as a reliever? Why wouldn't his following two seasons as a regular who had become adjusted to the MLB level who turned in great performances not be considered the norm? Just curious

    What I want to know is why are there rumors that once the Red Sox move Lowell they will look for another 3B? Youkilis is the best 3B on the team. Move him to 3B, slot V. Mart at 1B and let Varitek start at C. When you let Varitek rest, put V. Mart at C and let Kotchman spot start at 1B. They really don't need to focus on a new 3B when Youkilis is one of the best in the league

    Considering as Aardsma was the Mariners closer and posted 38 saves with a 2.52 ERA and 172 ERA+ with 80K in 71IP........ But that was unpredictable, it's all relative to the situation it was back then. At the time it was a wash... crap for crap.

    Must be. They are the Pirates after all. His abry price wouldn't be too terribly high, and they could've agreed to it and then turned around and traded him and probably gotten at least one nice player in return

    I'm really surprised at lot of these names. Capps? He had his first bad year at the age of 25 this season, but the previous 3 seasons had a combined ERA of 3.04 with a 1.05WHIP and 143ERA+ in 213IP... and Pirates gave up on him?

    I don't blame the Yankees for non-tendering him, but could Wang really be somewhat finished as a pitcher? He's about to be 30 and he's two years removed from a good full season. If it doesn't cost much it'd be foolish for a team in need of pitching to ignore him. Granted, he was embarrassingly bad last year

    If Jack Cust could play defense worth a damn I'd take him in a heartbeat, unfortunately he has no NL value. We really should look at Church as, at the very least, a 4th outfielder. It doesn't make sense not to. Scott Olsen could be interesting, but he had that shoulder surgery. Could be an interesting buy low reclamation project. Nats said they expected him to be ready for ST back in July after his surgery. Then again a reporter blogged this back in July: Maybe the Nats know something is up and he's not gonna be ready
