Less competition for starting spots. At his age, that's almost a guaranteed 10 to 12 yrs of World Cup and Euro qualifiers in groups with at least two nations with decent national leagues (and thus visible exposure to coaches/managers of teams within those leagues). Sounds like a smart business decision to me.
If there's ever a next time, I'd let the team take the field in a static fashion i.e. instruct them not to move to prevent any injuries. Do they have a mercy rule in the NWL?
Final preliminary CL draw today, and a couple of nice matches to look forward to: Bremen v Sampdoria Kiev v Ajax Anderlecht (and Kljestan) drew Partizan Belgrade
With the EPL starting on 08/14, that should come as no surprise to anyone. They're probably not thrilled about England v Hungary either, but at least that one doesn't involve extensive travelling.
Chris Carpenter: Looks like Matt Clement, pitches like Matt Clement. If he can give us 3 years like Clement gave us, I wont complain. He pitched the clincher game in 2003 - I'll take that every year. 8-) .
I never realized it until you asked...but the answer as it relates to pocketing draft picks appears to be no. :-s Then this may be a perfect first time opportunity.
Just letting you guys know that Kljestan was in Anderlecht's starting line-up for tonight's game (the traditional opener of the new season, the so-called Supercup between the league champion and the winner of the cup) He was substituted after 60' by Jan Polak.
I doubt that happens. Dufour was injured for most of the past season; he'll need to prove he's fully fit again first. Only if he's lights out to start the new season I see a slim chance of him moving at the deadline (as Standard didn't qualify for any European competition, eligibility for those obviously isn't a problem)
I think you've hit the real core of the problem here. Soccer is the most popular sport in most of the rest of the world, but not in the US. It seems unrealistic to me to expect soccer to adapt its rules/format to the expectations of US television audiences just for the sake of its popularity in that country.
I guess we can deduct one from the 24.3 million when the next WC comes around. Having watched the WC (and having played youth and competitive soccer for 18 years), I conclude it's a great game without any major flaws.
FIFA rankings updated after the WC. USA move up 1 place to joint 13th with Serbia lol at France dropping 12 places to 21st Belgium move up 11 places to 48th, but none of you care about that anyway
