I think someone has to jump Bama to #1. I don't like the idea of an idle team moving to #1 just because everyone around them lost.

the speed in the SEC is always a step above everyone else. I don't know what they eat down south but every team in the confederacy flies all over the field. But Penn State has done well against the SEC in bowl games, so speed isn't always enough

I won't argue that they have to win out. Absolutely true based on the conference. I'll argue that they don't have depth. Their backup offensive skill players could all be starters. Their defense is also very disciplined. Hopefully they'll have a chance to match up with one of the big boys from the Big XII or SEC in January.

Penn State has played the games on their schedule and more or less blown the doors off of every single team they've played. Some of their players would be in more of the award picture if they weren't pulled in the 3rd quarter of almost every game

They shouldn't.(and probably wouldn't) I don't think Penn State goes undefeated though. A 1 loss Big XII team wouldn't be a complete crime. A 1 loss SEC team over an undefeated PSU team would be criminal. we'll see about PSU. They look strong, but road games vs. Wisconsin and OSU, plus a season finale with a decent looking MSU all worry me.

that's where the controversy starts....let's say LSU and PSU go undefeated, but OU beats Mizzou in the Big12 game.....does OU beat out PSU for the NC spot?

I know it won't happen because of conference tie-ins, but how awesome would a USC-Oklahoma bowl game be?

Both of those teams would have far better resumes and Penn State would deserve to be left out. better resumes in term of strength of conference, not OOC. Penn State's OOC was crap, but Texas' wasn't exactly mind-blowing, and Bama's best was a now unranked Clemson team. Regardless of whether it's because of conference or out of conference, the resumes still will be better. It is one of the problems with not having a playoff. It's not really Penn State's fault that the conferences are better than theirs, but it it what it is. The same thing happened to Auburn years back. which is why I'm rooting against every undefeated team every week. The only way PSU makes the title game is to a) go undefeated and b) have no more than one other undefeated team

It'll take 5 or more players like Fontenot, Marquis, Wuertz, etc. It might take less if you're talking about Marmol, DeRosa, Marshall, or Lilly. we got Harden AND Gaudin for the potential of Gallagher and a bucket of crap. It won't take 5 players off our 40 man roster to get Beltran -
I'm not saying PSU deserves to be higher right now. I'm fearing what will happen should, say, PSU, Texas and Alabama all go undefeated

I don't care that OSU is winning....I'm less and less impressed by them every time I see them. There is no reason they shouldn't be winning by 21 points at home right now

So you're saying that during the preseason nobody really knows how good any team is and therefore it's unfair that the BCS could be affected by that uncertainty? I'm saying the first ranking of any kind to come out should be the Week 8 BCS ranking. If you have a situation where three teams end the year undefeated, the one who started the year with the lowest preseason ranking is most likely going to be left out. Yes, the human poll is "only" 1/3 of the formula, but that's big enough that it shouldn't be arbitrary early in the season

Penn State, as usual, is suffering from being ranked lower in the preseason than the other current unbeatens. I hate preseason rankings.
