I'm not sure Friedman is completely out and he's been my top choice all along. I just think Epstein and Friedman are on a different tier than Hahn, Coppolella, etc. Not worlds better, but better enough so sacrifice a little extra for. I agree, but I'd love to see some discussion on these second tier candidates because it seems like they always get lumped together.

Attempting to shift the conversation a little bit, if the negotiations with the Red Sox do break down, who would you want to go after next? I would assume Beane, Cashman, and Friedman are out at this point. I personally don't get all the love for Hahn. What has he really done to deserve it? My thinking is that Cherington wouldn't be available, either. I think I'd put Coppolella at the very top of my list, after Epstein. Has worked for two top organizations (Braves, Yankees) in both scouting and statistical system development.

The 0.3% chance of the Red Sox missing the playoffs on Sept. 3 includes the specific way of missing the playoffs that happened. You cannot multiply that percentage with the others, it is misleading -

At least we have the computers on our side. It's the computers on one side, and Bill Simmons and staff on the other. I'll take the computers. I do feel the Bears are much closer to being a wildcard playoff team than the worst team in football. And for all the breaks they got last year, they got the opposite two years ago. The Grantland author basically spent two sentences talking specifically about gambler's fallacy and then specifically used it to say the Bears could be the worst team in football. The Grantland author is also Bill Barnwell, formerly of Football Outsiders.

Weird. Most people have Rose in the 6-10 range, which I am typically fine with. I am a huge Rose homer but I have a hard time putting him ahead of Durant, but my homer kicks in when I acknowledge he could potentially have a higher ceiling than the level Durant is playing at now. So does Durant

I mean, if Kenney does meddle with baseball operations, I don't think that he should have that responsibility or that job. However, if he just handles the business side of the Cubs then I don't get the anger directed towards him. It does seem like he meddles with the baseball side, though.
