  1. Illini fans, help me out here. Was Verdell Jones expected to be this productive a college player? I realize Illinois had other needs, but he has certainly exceeded my early expectations for him.
  2. Every team is going to have a hole somewhere. There are several guys the Cubs are going to need to count on to rebound next year in order to be successful, Soto and Soraino would top that list. I think one key player that could really be an asset if he could put up decent numbers would be Baker. He could really be a key player at the 2B position if he could duplicate what he did for the Cubs last year over the course of a full season.
  3. I can live with it. I think it helps that this pushes Fukudome back to RF. Besides the obvious defensive issues the Cubs have with Soriano, the other two outfield spots are in good shape.
  4. From my understanding, he has implemented a year round program for the entire organization.
  5. You really don't any managers or pitching coaches do that? I think there is some truth to the argument that pitch counts have become so scrutinized that it is effecting their conditioning and stamina. Obviously every situation is different, but I do think pitchers across all levels aren't throwing enough. Don't take that as me advocating a 9 year old go out and throw 300 pitch bullpens 5 times a week. But, I think there are some gains that could be made by more throwing, but those are often neglected by the pervasiveness of the pitch count scare.
  6. Interested to know the general feeling around here concerning pitch counts. I have always been of the opinion that they are a useful tool and need monitoring, but are not the only tool, not the most important tool. I think it is far too simplistic to point to pitch counts as the main reason for injury. It is silly to me to see so much attention placed on pitch counts and not considering any of the other factors involved. I am interested to see how the new philosophy taking shape in Texas with Nolan Ryan turns out. They are stressing more emphasis on conditioning and stamina. They do not remove any of their pitchers simply based on pitch count. Mike Maddux is in agreement on this philosophy as well. I realize this is often a controversial issue, considering some of the promising young arms the Cubs have had issues with over the years.
  7. Not at all. I don't even think I implied that either. My point was Theriot's feelings, or lack thereof for Bradley, have no bearing on his value to the team.
  8. Why are we acting like Theriot verbally raped Milton, his kids, wife, and mother? I don't see his comments as being that awful. (unless there is more to it that I haven't seen, which is very possible) I'm not sure what comments you are referring to, but Theriot was the centerpiece of the teammates who were quoted all over the place about Milton. Dempster said some things, but also said something about welcoming him back which sounded like BS but served its purpose. I think Ramirez had the classiest response, acknowledging that Milton had issues but more importantly stating it was meaningless and had no effect on the season. Some of these guys sounded more than willing to feed into the nonsense that Milton's attitude somehow contributed to the team struggling. I was just referring to the quotes from the story linked above. I guess the larger point is that I don't think it matters one bit what Theriot thought of, or said about MB, when it comes to evaluating his place on the ballclub.

  10. I think the point of the discussion is that if someone is going to act as the team spokesman, please be someone really good, like Derrek Lee or Aramis Ramirez. That's way better than someone who only has the job because the team doesn't have someone better to play that position. I see your side of it, but I guess I don't think Theriot is intentionally putting himself out there to bash Bradley. He was asked about it and gave his opinion on the situation. I'd figure any Cub being interviewed would get the same question. Now, if Theriot was the one bringing the subject up in interviews, that would be a different story, but you have to know the question is going to be asked, and not just to him. I understand the concerns about Theriot no longer being a "cheap" source of production, but I still think the difference between him and a guy like Blanco (offensively speaking) is still a rather large gap that shouldn't be discarded without any other lineup improvements.
  11. As far as Theriot's comments on Bradley, what did he say that was so damning? Wouldn't he know better than anyone else what the situation was like with Bradley? I think if this was a situation where the Cubs were actually entertaining the thought of bringing Bradley back, Theriot wouldn't have said anything. But it has been clear to anyone that he was gone since the end of the 09 season. If Theriot was asked his opinion on bradley he probably felt pretty safe giving it since he was going to be gone regardless.
  12. IU's freshmen are a fun group to watch, especially Maurice Creek. He had 31 against UK and 29 last night.
  13. I don't know how many games they will win, but watching this year's IU team it is obvious they are a lot more talented. Again, it probably wont show much in the W/L record, but they at least look they belong on the floor this year.
  14. My point about reaching .500 was I think that is the ceiling, I agree it is not likely. I'l enjoy watching the improvement form last year though, that is for sure. At least this year, the talent disparity between IU and their opponents will not be as big as it was last year. There will still be a disparity, just not as big. There were several games last year when IU didn't even belong on the same floor as their opponent.
  15. Dubious on Selby, more optimistic on Kendrick. As CCP said, IU has a nice foundation, but an elite player could be a revelation (true for most programs, obviously). Kendrick to Memphis. :( Pretty odd timing for a kid that everyone assumed was waiting until the spring to sign. I don't see IU having a realistic shot at Selby. I like this year's class quite a bit. It would a miracle for Crean to bring in a 5 star kid like that coming off a 6-25 year. I think if IU could have a .500 season that would be a huge step forward.
  16. Lots of promising performances by freshmen tonight. IU was led by Maurice Creek, Derek Elston, and Christian Watford.
  17. Nothing important? Kenny and Ricketts have already met with the officials in Naples, twice. Kenney added the following: "Collier County has a number of suitable locations for a world-class spring training facility." This is legit from the people I have talked to that I know ho live down there. Florida is not that bad for ST. I have worked that area several times during ST. If it happens, expect many games with the Red Sox and Twins who train in nearby Ft. Myers. You're quoting a post from two months ago. My bad. Stupid old posts.
  18. Where was this? Blue Jays park....can't remember which town....Dunedin? I think it is Dunedin, just north of Clearwater. I haven't been there but it sounds like the same situation the Red Sox were in here in Ft. Myers. City of Palms Park is in the middle of the city with not much parking and it's an older facility. They are getting new digs in South Ft. Myers similar to the setup the Twins have here at the Lee County Sports Complex. The Cubs are looking for 120-130 acres and a state of the art facility would be built. Depending on the property they buy it should be close to the inter-state and no problems with parking. Yeah, Lee County is set up much better with the adjoining fields and location. You can be there from the beach in a quick amount of time, but not guarantees heading back with the beach bridge traffic.
  19. The same broad generalizations are constantly made about Cubs fans as well. Cincinnati is not a bad town and most people I have run into at Cubs-Reds games have been good people. How do they not know whether to be a northerner or a hick? What does that even mean?
  20. I thought Cubs game threads were bad..... Go Bengals btw...
  21. You thought he would hit .226/.299/.382 in a platoon situation? i didn't think he would suck that bad, but i definitely thought there was a high probability of him sucking pretty bad. Must have been a lucky guess.
  22. Depends on how bad the field is. Most everything I see has it clearing up this evening with only about a 30% rain chance. I'm supposed to be going as well...
