    what is the deal w/ a friggin' tuesday afternoon game? i have class at 11, 12, 1, and 3, making getting to this game practically impossible. why don't they just push hill back to tuesday to rub it in a little more. :(

    Give me a break. Pitching has not been the problem with this team, its been offense. It has alwys been offense, last year the Cubs were near the top in HRs, SLG, and BA. And only in the middle of the pack in runs scored. Same in 2003 and 2004. The Cubs have the pitching to win, but not the offense. So are you saying the Cubs shouldn't try to upgrade? That is pretty assinine. Yeah, we'll trade some surplus pitching for Abreu. I'm sure they'll take a package of Marshall and Hill for Abreu. Offense doesn't win division titles. Pitching does. yep. so if you have a chance to upgrade your offense you shouldn't even do it. You really think we can upgrade the offense w/o downgrading some other element of our team? We don't live in fantasy land. Philly will get something valuable in return, not a bunch of minor league leftovers that could beat out Rusch and Williamson for a rotation spot. i don't know what philly would want in return, and neither do you. that's not really the point, though. you shouldn't automatically dismiss the notion of upgrading the offense just b/c you think pitching and defense wins championships (which isn't true, but whatever).

    well, [expletive], i was up by like 50 early in the week, but bad ollie showed up today, blanton was amazing last night, and the cubs can't hit carpenter. SofS still has morris and capuano...i got nothing. come on, offense!

    how can any play that involves having a guy blindly sprint toward home plate while the pitched ball is heading to the guy standing right on top of home plate be 'not very risky'? a missed bunt, an unbuntable ball out of the strike zone, or a popped up bunt is a disaster. When the batter at the plate is just as likely to put the ball in play with bunt as with a swing. Check that, MORE likely to put the ball in play with a bunt. I generally don't like the squeeze, but with Pierre, the odds are even at worst. but the runner isn't out if the batter swings and misses. and pierre doesn't have to offer at a pitch over his head or in the dirt. i bet his bunt contact % goes down quite a bit if the pitch bounces in front of the plate. if he wasn't squeezing, he wouldn't have to offer at that pitch.

    Because it tells us that Dusty has at least some brain activity. the squeeze is little more than a show off move for the manager. it's unnecessarily risky. Not with a great bunter like Pierre hitting. It's not very risky at all. . you do realize that he ended up getting a hit, right? wouldn't you take that over a run scoring sac bunt or a rally killing caught stealing? You realize that nearly all of the outs Pierre makes are pop ups and weak grounders right? Neither give a great chance for a runner at third to score. Yes, he got a hit, but it was more likely that he doesn't get the runner hom if he swings away. The squeeze was a good move. if i had to do it with anybody, it'd be pierre. but i wouldn't do it.
