says the guy who is bantering back and forth about a trade offer... ps - you just blew any chance of my team showing mercy to yours when we play. real smooth.

    like i said...sounds like we're both happy.
  3. regardless of what kind of shape he was in, he apparently still couldn't hit. i bet lance armstrong is in good shape right now, but i wouldn't want him on my team.

You're just jealous. :D yep...your consecutive second place finishes have me green with envy. :D I like to measure things based on average finish over the past three years. well, that works out great then. because i like to measure success based on championships. looks like we're both happy.

wow, pitching is worth more points this year.
  8. hope everyone's got their roster set...
  9. ends with this... Wow, I feel so humbled. A "lol" from a "Superstar", whew. Those 16,000 posts sure mean my POV is irrelevant, yep. actually, your pov makes your pov irrelevant. yep.
  10. prior has probably given the cubs their $20 mil worth, by the way. his 2003 alone was probably worth that much. obviously, the rest of your argument sucks, but that part was especially bothering me, and it was one of the few parts of your rant that hadn't already been torn down.
  11. One error does not lose a playoff series. You don't think there's a very good chance we would have been in the WS if he had simply turned that double play? my goodness, people, is that the only play you watched the entire series? ONE bad defensive play does not mean that defense cost the cubs a trip the WS...there were dozens upon dozens of bad pitches, and dozens upon dozens of unproductive at bats. have a little perspective.
  12. exactly. if you wanted to build the 2003 team with defense in mind, gonzalez would no doubt be your ss. using gonzalez as the example actually hurts your argument because it shows that any defender can boot balls, and the difference between a very good defender and an average one is miniscule.
  13. Hell, we still don't have a #5 hitter. Actually we do, but he's leading off. We have a few options for leadoff too. Oh well, I think a team needs the right balance of pitching, defense, and offense to be really good. Defense is going to make a bigger impact than 10%. Case in point Alex Gonzalez and his "defense" could have helped the Cubs get to the WS in 2003. Tell me I'm wrong. you're wrong. So, the guy who hit 27 HRs and slugged .500, while putting up a .960 OPS with runners in scoring position last year, isn't good enough for you? What about the guy who put up an .885 OPS, and .930 with RISP? i don't know who you're referring to...if it's jones, i have no problem with him being on the team. i'd much prefer him in the OF to pie.

Case in point Alex Gonzalez and his "defense" could have helped the Cubs get to the WS in 2003. Tell me I'm wrong. Gonzalez was on the team mainly for his defense. He hit a few home runs but he surely didn't spend 13 seasons in the league because of his career .302 OBP. You are absolutely right. You are helping my arguement that defense is important to winning teams. I think offense outweighs defense, on a scale - but the defense has to be solid for a team to be really good. argh...this is not supporting your argument. gonzalez was considered a very good defensive player.
  15. you're wrong. I don't think so. first of all, your "case in point" is based on one isolated play out of 50 bagillion. secondly, using the gonzalez error as your example is a terrible way to prove your point that you need to have great defenders in your lineup...because gonzalez was considered a great defender...and he still screwed up.

  17. and to think, you've only graced us with six insightful posts such as this one.
  18. It's all about the W's and L's. You can't win without good defense. You need offense too, and I don't think Pie is going to really hurt us. There is a logjam in the OF right now, but I really think Murton & Soriano are going to be mainstays. Yes you can. You might have trouble winning playoff games with bad defense, but just look at the Red Sox in 2004. I'd much rather have the luxury of good defense up the middle to help the pitching staff out. With this group of arms, they are going to need as much help as possible. yeah...offensive help.
  19. yes you can. baseball is not like football or basketball where defense is 50%...i'd guess it's closer to 10%...if that.
  20. corey didn't like to approach the wall because he didn't want to get close to fans who were going to pester him for an autograph.
  21. hill's control has been fantastic since the second half of last season. he didn't walk a batter this spring.
  22. There's a lot of evidence to show that he was bad last year largely in part to how infrequently Dusty would use him due to the team being so bad. When he was used on an even somewhat regular basis, he did pretty well. His bad periods typically came after Dusty sat him at least 3 games or more. i think there's lots of evidence showing that last year was pretty much in line with his entire career, save for his ridiculous run in 2005.
  23. he probably is one of the biggest weaknesses on the team. i'd say he, izturis and marquis are probably the top three.
  24. heh...everybody talks about what a hack perry is until he gives the cubs a favorable review...all the sudden he provides pretty good analysis.
  25. and he'll be making more money this year if he's cut than most of us would make in a lifetime. he's starting the year off on the DL, so no yo-yoing will occur with young pitchers. just admit your emotions are what is causing you to want him to be cut. That has something to do with it. I'm an emotional fan. But that doesn't change the fact that this guy has always been on the DL since 2004 and cannot be relied upon even as a reliever. and neither one of them is being counted on for anything at this point. so no harm is done by having them on the DL, and anything they add is considered an unexpected bonus. releasing them just b/c you're mad that they've been hurt accomplishes nothing.
