  1. maybe, but in 4 years Liuken and Johnson will be 20 and there will be a 1/2 dozen 16 year olds who are probably better Not to mention the 4 12 year olds China will bring with passports fresh off the printer. liukin is a month shy of being 19. so johnson doing well at 20 isn't so far-fetched.
  2. there's a waiting list yes. iowa LOVES her. I am guessing we will see her again in 2012.
  3. there's a waiting list yes. iowa LOVES her. I am guessing we will see her again in 2012. hope so. i'm kinda bummed that she didn't win gold actually.

  5. wait, are we talking about baseball games or one of those big puzzles you see on like the real world/road rules challenge?
  6. I'm saying in a general sense that having someone with experience on the team might help in the overall anxiety level of the team. Just like if you're in a room full of anxious people in a crisis, the results probably won't be as good as if you were in a room full of calm, cool-headed people. That's all. I'm not saying it's going to impact specific at-bats. And I never did. There's something to be said for how environment affects a person's ability to work, and that exists, in sports, business, and life. If a player has a positive calming effect on said environment, it certainly can't hurt and probably will help the overall mood and approach of his surroundings. what goony said for your crisis analogy. and if it's not going to impact specific at-bats, then what does it impact?
  7. i can't tell you guys how willing i was to trade galarraga. his three exemptions are looking pretty good right now.
  8. what are you saying then?
  9. As am I. I don't think it's an absolute by any means but depending on the guy and team I think it does have an impact from time to time. I buy into it. I agree with CCF69. I can give various examples from all aspects of life, but being surrounded by people who are calm and cool definitely influences your own ability to manage emotions. This goes for everything in life from sports, to crisis situations, to family conflicts. It's just human nature. so if it's the 9th inning of game 7th of the nlcs and soriano's up with the bases loaded (but really nervous), he's going to think about how edmonds was just totally relaxing listening to tunes before the game and he'll feel better? come on.
  10. eh, i don't think i buy into that theory at all. i'm just glad he's been so productive.
  11. i don't see how that's possible. hopefully they just do better because they will have more experience (if, in fact, they were pressing in '07).
  12. right. and those guys aren't as valuable as players who are "sluggers." i hear this "well, that's just not the type of hitter he is" arguments about theriot quite a bit. so does that mean you just don't consider his .367 SLG or whatever? hey, jason marquis just isn't the type of pitcher that strikes guys out, limits hits, or prevents runs. when you accept that he's just not the type of pitcher, you'll like him a lot better.
  13. dempster.
  14. some more terrible baserunning by theriot?
  15. He's pointed out some stupid Theriot stuff. cubinny, you aren't making any sense. Soriano didn't think he hit a HR and end up with a double. He thought he hit a HR and ended up with a double. It's not a little thing. Soriano has multiple times watched doubles and ended up having to slide into what should have been a stand-up double. This was different, he didn't even get to 2nd. It is a big deal, and it is absolutely ridiculous that people are downplaying and acting like Bob is in the wrong for complaining. how is it a big deal? He walked to first base when he should have been standing on 2nd. I'm not one to get overly critical on hustle, but this was bad. i mean, yeah, it's bad, but i wouldn't classify it as a big deal in an 8-2 game.

  17. Most of the current Braves have very little history against Marquis. Andruw Jones killed him, but he's moved on. Chipper has hit 3 home runs against him in only 6 at-bats. Overall though, there's no real idea if this Braves squad is a bad matchup for him. every matchup is a bad matchup with marquis That's not really true. Let's give Marquis credit for the good starts he's had. He's not a 65 ERA+ pitcher this year. He's a 95 ERA+ pitcher, which isn't really all that horrible for a #5. The Braves are no juggernaut this year, it's nothing like facing them when they were a playoff team. The other thing is, he's been holding pretty steady through the year. Putting up some bad starts, then some mediocre ones, with a smattering of good starts. We're in mid August now, which is usually well past the time when Jason collapses. Hasn't happened yet. Let's hope it continues. I agree with what you're saying. I take issue with the bolded part though. It's much better than "not all that horrible." For a number five starter, it's actually pretty great. it's not so great for a guy making $7 mil.
  18. not the first time you've said that. ZIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING.
  19. i think we can all agree that we want a guy who hits 75 hrs and strikes out zero times.
  20. don't start harden if it's gonna rain.
  21. has anyone ever had two SP's throw no-hitters on the same day...and have both of those guys ON THE BENCH???!!!! i guess it makes me feel better to know i was practically trying to give both danks and sanchez away and none of you knuckleheads were smart enough to take them from me.
  22. what a truly awful trade by the reds. very excited about all the terrible articles that will be written about dunn over the next couple days though.
  23. i don't think dempster is funny at all. but he's made up for it by being really good at pitching this year.
  24. thank goodness justice has a world series vote.
