where do you guys get the [expletive] you come up with to argue about? first the sheets thing, then this. it's not even a debate in my opinion.

yeah, he's clearly minor league eligible. the rules say you can be on the minor league roster if you've played less than X number of games in the majors. it doesn't say anything about having played X number of games in the minors.

Zambrano sucked for a lot of last season and 2007 was Hill's best year. So what's your point? Zambrano at his worst matches Hill at his best. I guess I can agree with that. Carlos Zambrano had a 4.52 ERA when removing his best month in 2007. Fine. You win. Rich Hill and Zambrano are equal pitchers. Next can we compare Ryan Theriot to Aramis Ramirez as hitters based on batting average? Almost everyone liked Rich Hill. Then he flamed out. I don't see why some people expect undying love and loyalty from all fans for a guy that had one pretty good season. Rich Hill was better in 2007 than Zambrano was in 2007 or 2008 If 2007 Rich Hill would like to come back I would love to see him in the rotation. I will also fill out that rotation with 1976 Mark Fidrych, 2003 Mark Prior and 1981 Fernando Valenzuela. Unfortunately, I want the 2009 versions of none of those pitchers taking the mound for the Cubs every 5th day. So again, I don't see what the point is. People liked Hill when he was good. Now that he can't throw strikes and has no options remaining, time to move on. Sean Marshall seems to have a chance to be a pretty comparable pitcher to the "good" Rich Hill. I would rather take my chances with him instead of having to sweat out every start with Hill and wonder if he is going to be effective. hey einstein, no one is arguing the cubs shouldn't have traded hill. also, learn math.

I took him just for you. i mean, it's only fair. both guys have arm injuries that will keep them out 1/2 the season, but you can stash hudson on your DL and i can't do the same with sheets solely because sheets' injury happened to occur while he was a FA, hudson's while he was under contract. makes perfect sense and is completely fair.

There have been quite a few instances in the past where players were granted instant availability at their positions when they came out of spring training as the designated starter at a new position. which is not what the rules say. yet we're dissecting the language of the DL rule as it applies to sheets. We're doing that because, whether or not intended that way, the wording of the rule is absolutely clear-cut. so are the rules regarding position eligibility.

and i realize the sheets and sandoval issues are separate. i just bring that up because i kinda sorta doubt don would have this same opinion about sheets if he were on, say...i dunno...matt's team.

the "must be on a team's DL" rule is meant to prevent the DL'ing of players who are day-to-day with injuries. not to prevent guys who are injured for half the season yet unsigned from being placed on the DL. i can't believe this is even a debate.

No, Don wanted to know if/when his player would become eligible at a position, not to get a special exemption to put him there to sidestep the rules. Yes, he was asking for a clarification of the rules. He doesn't currently have him at 3B to sidestep them, he asked what the eligibility rules were. Juan clarified that if a player is the opening day starter at a position, that player becomes eligible for that position, by CBS's player eligibility rules. He's not asking if he can stash him at 3B until he plays there. You're trying to claim this as some kind of precedent to side-stepping the rules. If Sheets is signed and placed on the DL before the season starts, he can go on the IR. That's as similar as the two scenarios get. Thank you Kevin. It's really not that hard to understand. Adam just can't seem to give a reason that Sheets should be able to be placed on the DL even though he's not on the MLB DL. He just tries to deflect upon others because he can't give a valid reason. like i've said eight fucking times. he's hurt. he's disabled. he is unable to pitch due to injury. he is going to surgery. How does that get around the fact that he is not on the MLB DL????????????????????????????????????????? Why won't you answer that? he's not on a cocksucking team. the only reason he's not on a major league DL is because he happened to be a FA when this happened.

It started a long time ago and has been the case many many times. I know it's been that way for pitchers who convert from RP to SP and vice versa. But, I wasn't aware that this happened for position players. In fact, I remember talking to you about this during the offseason about shortening the amount of games a guy has to play to be eligible. Turns out, you get eligibility if you don't play any, but get named at that position to start the season, which is even better than what I was originally asking. it's different for pitchers. dempster, for instance wasn't eligible as a SP last year b/c he hadn't made 10 starts or whatever. but he also wasn't eligible at RP b/c you can't have a guy in your lineup as a RP when he's starting games. if dempster wasn't eligible as a SP, he would be an unusable player for 1/3 of the season. position players are different. sandoval is eligible at 1b and 1b only. that is the position he is eligible at. he can still be used as a 1b.
