  1. Are you just getting that from the movie? His daughter is in college or graduated by now, so if she really was what kept him from Boston, I doubt it would now unless he has other kids there as well. I guess we can file this one under take it for what it's worth.
  2. So which has more potential to be the least watched NLCS in the history of televised baseball: Cardinals/D Backs or Cardinals/Brewers?
  3. I'd prefer Epstein over Beane, but if Boston demands some bizarre compensation and Oakland doesn't, I'd take Beane.
  4. What's to dislike about Doc, besides the fact that he'll never be a Cub?
  5. I think Lohse is up next. Lohse outdueling Halladay would be even better. I suppose on the plus side, if The Cards do win, half the team will drunk drive their cars off cliffs.
  6. What the [expletive] Phillies. Time to get your bats out of your asses or risk being sent home by the very team you tried all too hard to guarantee a playoff spot to last Friday night.
  7. Knowing what we've heard since, and knowing what I know of Jake Peavy now that he's been in town for a couple of years, I fully believe that singing in a bar story. Maybe Epstein will be this years Roberts/Peavy/Granderson/Garza. We ended up getting the last one, so who knows.
  8. As soon as people accept the fact that he's never going to be a guy that takes a ton of walks, the better. I keep hearing how great his swing is, and he's definitely shown flashes of greatness. I don't think he'll ever live up to his orignal potential but will end up a solid big league starter. Hopefully, we can sign Aramis to a team friendly 3 years deal, and if Vitters seems ready for the big leagues at the end of 2013, trade Aramis in the following offseason or if we're not contending mid season.
  9. First he's traded to the Astros, now this. It has not been a good year for this kid.
  10. They are useful, but they aren't cheap. So if you have a limited budget and needs elshwere it's just not feasible. True. However, considering I think Wilson and Sabathia are pipe dreams (not so with Pujols/Fielder), the Cubs should be looking for reliable for the time being. Seriously, the rotation is: Garza Dempster Z (but probably not) Wells ? Overall, that's neither good nor reliable. And it's likely to get worse, since I think it's a fair assumption that Zambrano is gone. As far as Wells goes, he's gotten worse the last two years and was probably always smoke-and-mirrors. In that case, when you have two reliable starters, you have to do something. We need a front end guy. A few guys who could potentially be available through trade are James Shields, Jair Jurrjens, Gio Gonzalez, Trevor Cahill, Gavin Floyd, and John Danks though all would be pricey in terms of trade. If we want to take a gamble, Francisco Liriano or even Luke Hoochever( I know, he's getting very close to the is what he is catagory) could be cheaper. I know I've mentioned this 1,000 times, but Ben Sheets could be a worthwhile reclamation project at the right price.
  11. Sure, lets just go after King Felix while were at it.
  12. Danny Jackson, that's who I was thinking of when I said Mark Davis. And Tewksbury was a Cub? I don't even remember that.
  13. He may be a bad man and an over rated manager, but he did do something right. http://www.howtomeetbroads.com/wp-content/files_mf/cache/th_924bb7b2a647669540aed775d70f13f5_biancalarussa.jpg
  14. Because if Boston lets us talk to Epstein, it's because they're promoting Cherington to GM. They won't let us get both. Or they could, you know, just let us pillage their entire organization.
  15. The only way I'd be interested in Garland is if Z is traded, and even then, it's a downgrade. We'd still have Garza, hopefully a TBD front end starter, and Dempster, and then we'd have Wells, Cashner, Samardzjia, and J Jackson to pick from to round out the rotation. Then again, I wouldnt be opposed to trading Wells to a team interested in a cheap back of the rotation starter whose under team control for a few more years.
  16. Obviously, no thanks on Cashner, Jackson, and any other worthwhile prospects. I would not give up any top prospects like McNutt, Szczur, or Jackson. Vitters either. We really shouldn't have to give up any players, certainly not top prospects. As highly as Ricketts values the farm system, I doubt he'd give up guys like that anyway. If they want someone like Colvin, J Jackson, Barney, Coleman, DeWitt, Russell, or Campana they can have them, or even Byrd, Soriano, or Wells. If they want to move on to a new era, they go with Cherington and let Epstein explore other options. If they don't, then they keep Epstein. I would take Lackey, and a good portion of his contract. He's never pitched in the NL, so that could be to our advantage. I'd definitely take Crawford, but I don't think they're quite ready to give up on him.
  17. Same stadium, too. The glove slam is still better. However, one thing that beat that, I forget how long ago, but in a game vs. The Astros, we were bombing Brandon Backe, and after a home run, he did a glove slam of his own, or something similar.
  18. It obviously severely affected Albert. I mean, he only went 4-5 with 3 doubles. If Albert comes to the Cubs we promise to ban all shadows from Wrigley.
  19. To anyone who follows Bruce Miles on Twitter, his latest is a link to an article that suggests that The Red Sox could very well ask for top prospects like Brett Jackson, Vitters, McNutt, and Szczur(not all 4) as compensation for Epstein. Theees no way in hell The Cubs can justify doing that, especially considering that a great deal of The Red Sox success during the Epstein era was due to their player decelopement an d giving up any of our top guys would be foolish for a GM no matter who. If they want financial compensation, that's fine. If they want somemyoung fringe prospects or guys like Jay Jackson or Alberto Cabrera that's OK too, but no way that we can give up any of our top prospects. If it were to come down to that, I'd just as soon go with an interim and wait til next year for Epsteins contract to end, in which case they may as well have just kept Hendry around. It's not like his firing accomplished anything.
  20. If this [expletive] drives in the tying run, I'm going to break something or somebody.
  21. Skippy totally had that, but what can you do.
  22. I wonder how it feels to ground into an inning ending bases loaded double play with Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman lurking behind you. Not too good I'd imagine.
  23. And so ends the magical run of the Tampa Bay Rays. pity.
