  1. This is why Wikipedia is wayyyyy worse than Twitter. Twitter is awesome. i'm waiting on conservapedia for confirmation. I wouldn't hold your breath for him to show up there...he's Jewish, you know. There's no way a guy named Epstein could be Jewish.
  2. well considering that randy winn was compensation for lou piniella going to tampa, this traditional precedent really is not set in stone. Aside From Castro, Garza, and Cashner, we really don't have any big league players I wouldn't rather give them than any of our top prospects. And yes, that's more of a knock against our big leaguers than an endorsement of our prospects.
  3. This whole thing reminds me a little too much of the Peavy debacle. The story seemed to change literally every hour. At least this one can only last a few weeks max and not the entire winter.
  4. Please tell your team to beat the Cardinals. Why are the Astros playing the Cardinals?
  5. Hopefully this will put a stop to all the Crane Kenney bitching. HE'S GOING TO RUIN EVERYTHING He's histories greatest monster.
  6. Oh no, I see what's going on here. I'll save my enthusiasm for the press conference, thank you very much.
  7. Or it's more realistic to think that this year's record has little to do with next year's record and they start 0-0. With neutral health this probably wasn't a 90 loss team this year. This is very true, however, if we do get Fielder or Pujols and lose Aramis, I'd expect to be a .500ish team with everyone healthy. If we do manage to keep keep Aramis as well and add a front line starter, and we could have that 90+ win team.
  8. There is all kinds of stupid at work here. First off, the Cubs scored the 8th most runs in the NL this year and had the 8th highest OPS. They are average. You can compete with that (Philly and Atlanta did). Add a superstar to that lineup while replacing a mediocre guy and you are going to have a respectable offense. The Cubs have sucked for two straight years, why would you want to go through that again? One higher draft pick is not worth sucking when those draft picks are such longshots to contribute anyway. Its hard to see how Pujols or Fielder could turn the mess we had on the field this year into a playoff team. Maybe your right. Id also add, its not just the offense thats weak. The starting rotation needs 2 or 3 more arms as well. Just one, really... Garza, Dempster, Wells, New Guy, Cashner/someone else We lost 91 games last year. Adding Fielder and 1 pitcher is not going to result in a 18-20 game swing, particularly when you account for the fact that Ramirez is likely gone, Soriano will continue to decline, etc. And like Vin, you're thinking in terms if having to immediately going from what we are now to a 90 win team with nothing in between. While it's not impossible, it's not a realistic expectation. It's more realistic to hope for at least 1 80 some win team in between.

The starting rotation needs 2 or 3 more arms as well. Because you're thinking in terms that it would be a win now. It would be a cornerstone unless they did some additional splurging. Yeah, if they added Pujols or Fielder and took away Aramis and Pena, it would not make us a tone beter, however, once more money comes off the books, they can add more. Also, make some trades. Add Fielder to Castro, Jackson, Garza, Soto, and Cashner, and we have a very solid young nucleus to work with.
  10. How come? Say we have Jackson and Castro slated as our 1-2 for the foreseeable future. Fielder hitting 4th. That gives us a very solid foundation to build on. Maybe Aramis signs, maybe not. After 2012, there will be another 40+ mil to spend. If Epstein is in the fold, and has a nice long talk with Fielder or Pujols about the direction they plan on going, they may very well prefer to be a cornerstone.
  11. I don't understand how he can say that, and how anyone can be sure what will happen with any players when we don't have a freaking GM. This X 10. Didn't Ricketts pretty much say that the new GM would have money available and he'd be able to do what he wants, within reason?
  12. Don't worry, tonight it will switch back to him staying in Boston, but he'll be spotted singing Go Cubs Go in bar somewhere the following afternoon.
  13. What format to you tend to buy your music? I'd have to say mainly Amazon MP3, but Amazon is always a nice place to find used CDs as well. I used to love browsing the used CD stores, but aside from a few, they seem to be dying out.
  14. if something breaks, the threat title will change Might even just start a new one and lock this sucker. I wouldn't bother. It will turn into this one, and the moment any actual news comes out, 11 different threads will be started.
  15. I think they are going to tread water for at least a year or two until Soriano's contract comes off the book. They might be able to get rid of him and pay most of his money his last year and a half. I also think the next GM will know that. Hendry and the Tribune/Zell are responsible for this mess and Cub fans need to be told what they are planning to do. If they have a plan that's articulated well by the next GM, I think fans will be patient. Theo or whomever will know what he's/she's (Ng) getting into. Also, Kaplin is a freaking clown. There's a difference between treading water and what would become of The Cubs if they plan were a 100MM team. I'm assuming in such a case, they's let Aramis walk and make them even more unwatchable. They should also consider trading Byrd to anyone willing to pick up his whole salary. Opening day 2012 could look like Jackson Barney Castro LaHair Soriano Colvin Soto DeWitt/Baker in such a nightmarish world. They wouldn't tread water. They'd sink like a sack of bricks. On the plus side we'd be plenty lefthanded.
  16. I really don't know how they'd manage a 100MM team next year with 75 MM already on the books between Z(18), Soriano(18), Dempster(14 option), Garza(7-8), Byrd(6.5) Marmol(7), and the 5 MM owed to Pena. Lets not forget any raises due to guys like Soto, Marshall, Castro, and Samardzjia. Pick up Aramis' option, and were well over 90MM without any additions.
  17. Don't forget, in 2003 the future and the present were looking very bright for the Cubs. Prior, Wood, Clement, and Z looked to be a world beating rotation for years to come. Sosa was still great, and Ramirez was going to be around for years to come. Hee Sop Choi was sure to pull it together and be a star. As soon as Corey Patterson returned, we'd have an elite CF, no doubt a perenial 30/30 guy, not to mention the farm system. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to leave work early to start drinking heavily.
  18. Because we still have a young and healthy Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, and Matt Clement. Get with the program.
  19. Come on Ryan, at the time he was 26-27, healthy, and better than anyone that we have to offer at this point and had a lot more around him than we do.
  20. I like him alot, especially considering how good he's been for those 2 years as a starter in one of the most hitter friendly parks on earth, but a lot of people are saying that due to the weak FA pitching class, he could end up with a 100mm deal, and I don't think I want to make that kind of commitment to him with so many holes to fill. If you're going to spend that much on 1 guy, it better be Pujols or Fielder, who will likely end up 150mm guys.
  21. I don't know how patient the general fan base is going to be. If we become a perenial 85+ loss team for the next few years, people are going to pack up and leave. Not saying all, but a good amount. Also in regards to Epstein, how willing is he going to be to come to a team that's a mess and not given enough money to clean it up? Remember, when he came to Boston after the 2002 season, he already had a pretty good core to work with like Manny, Nomar, Damon, Nixon, Veritek, and of course, the best pitcher in the world.
  22. http://news.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view/2011_1011next_step_logical_writing_on_wall_for_red_sox_to_sack_chicago-bound_epstein/srvc=home&position=also So if they fire him, we don't have to give them anything, right?
  23. They got where they are by pitching, which seems to have collapsed aside from Gallardo and of course, Braun and Fielder. Even after their red hot August, they're still a sub .500 team on the road, so if Carpenter can outduel Gallardo, this one might not make it to the weekend. [expletive], the Cardinals are going to the World Series with a team including Ryan Theriot, Nick Punto, and a bullpen full of guys I've never heard of aside from 56 year old Arthur Rhodes. [expletive] The Cardinals, The Brewers, The Phillies, and The Braves.
  24. Maybe we just need to accept that the 2011 Cardinals are the reincarnation of the 2007 Rockies. Maybe I jinxed them by saying that. Maybe I un-jinxed them by saying that. Maybe I re-jinxed them by saying that. Who the hell cares, I don't believe in jinxes.
  25. Run of the mill hot dog stand by day. Madhouse that happens to sell hot dogs by night.
