  1. Pretty much. We sold high and got the better end of the deal but it's not exactly something that's going to be a franchise changer or even worth gloating about. I guess we're just not used to selling high on players.
  2. The problem is, Flaherty and Marwin are probably better than four of the names you listed (Baker and Barney the exceptions), so letting them walk still makes no sense to me. Especially when we then claim Bianchi. Correction, they're potentially better than all of the names I mentioned but that wasn't my point. My point was that while we should have kept Flaherty and Gonzalez that doesn't mean we need to go out and get more minor league middle infielders.
  3. Then here's to hoping that he finds something to do other than broadcasting when his playing days are over.
  4. Hey, if anyone's familiar with their team trading any and all remotely valuable players for prospects that don't pan out  Ain't it the truth. And this, my friend, looks like a Pirate trade. Sadly, when I first heard of the rebuild my first thought was that that's what it could come down to and we don't have an Aramis Ramirez, Jason Bay or Nate McClouth to offer.
  5. Hey, if anyone's familiar with their team trading any and all remotely valuable players for prospects that don't pan out
  6. I don't believe it is. I just don't think we're seeing the big picture yet. Obviously, the pieces that have been available thus far have not met their criteria for cost-benefit analyses. I actually agree with the decisions they have made to date. That said, I am a huge fan of Theo playing his cards close to the vest, no matter how frustrating that may be for us as fans. Just going to take some patience, I think. Allow me to do some straw grasping here. We've heard about the full rebuild 3rd hand from David Kaplan.but Epstein hasn't said boo to the media. Its not impossible that they're letting teams think this so they come to us with offers for players who don't fit into the long term plans and see how much we can inflate the package. Meanwhile with the team that was slated as one of the favorites for Fielder seemingly out of the picture, and his market down it could give Theo an opportunity to strike and get him at a 5/125 type deal. Even if Theo did say the words full rebuild to someone, nowhere is it stated that full rebuild can't involve spending big money on the right player.
  7. With most players, I agree. However, with Soriano we should take what we can get and run with it. Assuming we have a fringe contender by 2014, he won't be a part of it and he's just getting older and slower. Dempster should have good value at the trade deadline as could Z if he has a rebound. As for Marmol, if we were willing to eat enough of his salary we could get as good of a package if not better than what we did for Marshall. His Velo might have dropped a bit but he still has some of the most electric stuff in the league.
  8. I agree with you there. I understand them not wanting to dish out the big bucks for Fielder, but we should still be able to pick up some pieces to make the team watchable rather than picking up every piece of discarded junk like a housewife at a a garage sale.
  9. Another thing: if the plan is really to build for 2014 at the earliest, Soriano's got to go. He can still hit for power especially lefties and if we're willing to pay the entire salary, I think we could at least get some decent fringe guys. There's no point in keeping him around at this point, but then again if we eat the entire salary there's no reason that we should just cut him and let someone else pick him up for league minimum.
  10. That would not come remotely close to the playoffs unless Ian Stewart hit 40 home runs and came in 2nd in MVP voting to Starlin Castro. Is this the year they add the 2 spare wild cards or next? There are massive ifs in the form of Zambrano, Dempster, Stewart, Jackson, and DeJesus but if all works out we could at least enjoy the season.
  11. Yeah, I'm still frustrated that we're giving up on at least 1-2 seasons for apparently no good reason, but if this is the kind of trade success we can look forward to I can live with it. Problem is that we didnt have to give them up and still don't. Hell, if we keep our current pitching in tact and pick up even someone like Pena, Kotchman, Loney, or Barton we could still have a fighting chance to back door into the playoffs without increasing payroll by much at all. I know it's a huge if, but if we resigned Pena for 1st and bat him 4th and if Castro could manage to take his success at the 2, 5, and 6 spots to the 3 spot all of the sudden we'd have a respectable team. Oh yeah, Cespedes would sure be nice too. DeJesus, Cespedes, Castro, Pena, Soto, Jackson, Stewart, 2nd baseman would be at least a balanced lineup. We could trade Byrd for whatever we can get, maybe Soriano too and if it doesn't work out, we could probably trade Garza next year or this summer and probably get just as much as we'd get right now.
  12. Yeah, we had a glut of them in the high minors until we started giving them away. Now we really need some. I don't think that we neccessairly need middle infield prospects, but considering our starting 2nd baseman will likely level out at Andres Blanco, Flaherty should have at least been given a look at spring training. Other than that, we have enough carcasses to inhabit 2nd base and backup SS between Baker, DeWitt, Binanchi, Barney, Mota, and eventually Logan Theriot. I am still perplexed as to why we left them unprotected, but at the same time there's no desperation to find AA-AAA middle infielders.
  13. He should be disciplined. Send him to a team with no hopes of contending for at least 3 years.
  14. Someone posted earlier in the thread that Toreyes has one of the best hit tools in the minors, so I'll happily take it, although we do already have 2 young high ceiling MI in Amaya and Hernandez. Sappelt, who had a brief stint in the big leagues last year to the turn of .243/.607 is just a body for the Iowa roster considering that our system is completely devoid of corner outfielders. Hey, a potential mid rotation starter and a high ceiling 19 year old for 1 year of a set up man. I'll take it.
  15. Good luck to him if he ever expects anyone to pitch to him. Last year, thee top 2 starters OPS were .738 and .719, and everyone else was well below .700 including Chone Figggins and his mind blowing .484. Oh yeah, the .719 belonged to Justin Smaok whose responsibilities would be assumed by Fielder.
  16. Surprised this isn't getting more attention, then again it said the Marshall/Wood deal wasn't as close as expected about 2 hours before it went down. That and it's David Kaplan I tried to start a thread on the Cubs Discussion board but it got locked. Because its being discussed to some degree in virtually every thread.
  17. I thought in 04 we dealt for Lee around Xmas. Maybe it was before Xmas week. I believe we traded Doug Glanville for Mickey Morandini on like Christmas Eve. So basically stocking stuffers.
  18. If we're going to suck next year, don't start the service time clock on guys who can still benefit from time in the minors. I agree to some extent, but with Brett Jackson, for example I'd like to see him in 2012. We have 3 other center fielders behind him. He's 23 and I think Szczurs going to be 22. Put Brett in now and in 2 years or so Szczur and Ha seem ready then we have a trade chip on our hands to fill a hole or 2 on what will hopefully be shaping up to be a team ready to contend. On a more selfish level, even if we're destined to punt 2012 as 2013 we at least want a somewhat watchable product and while I'd e willing to watch young players like Castro, Jackson and maybe Stewart and Vitters grow, if the roster is populated by junk, I have no interest in watching the Cubs of the 90's all over again especially with no Sammy knocking every other ball into orbit.
  19. I'd think you of all people would appreciate building a young team. I won't enjoy the next 1-3 seasons any more than anyone else, but I think they'll do this the right way. Hey, at least the entire minor league system will be interesting to follow although my following of the big league club will likely consist of checking the box score for Starlin Castros line.
  20. Are you being facetious? Cardinals may be old and just lost their top player, but I really don't think that The Cubs are a threat to anyone whose main goal for next season isn't a top 3 draft pick for 2013.
  21. Curious as to what their future plans hold though. They may have a better farm system than we do but they might not be too far away from looking worse than we do now. What does this even mean? I'm not sure he could tell you. I think what he's saying is that while the Cards have a decent farm system, they're not particularly well set up for the long term. And there is some truth to that, I think. Basically their current team has a lot of 35 an older guys and the younger guys seem more like role players than anything else with the possible exception of Garcia. I really dont see Freese, Craig, and Jay as guys that are going to take the team into the future. They have a good farm system but it's far from the type you look at and say who cares how old our current roster there are a lot of guys that will be gone by the time we hope to compete again. Then again, like the Twins, you can never count them out long term no matter how many top players they lose so who knows.
  22. Plus Keith Law broke the Gio deal, and he's been asked on twitter his opinion of the Marshall/Wood deal which he replied that he likes the prospects involved. Yet, he's not giving the names. He wants us to suffer until we accept his Matt Szczur/Juan Pierre comparison.
  23. Curious as to what their future plans hold though. They may have a better farm system than we do but they might not be too far away from looking worse than we do now.
  24. The hope juice will be a lot sweeter and more refreshing if they import the fruit from Cuba.
  25. I guess DeJesus is an upgrade over the horrid carousel that cycled through right field after Fukudome left. And Steve Clevenger certainly can't be any worse than Koyie Hill. Ian Stewart may not be an upgrade over Ramirez but he's whiter and less lazy so that will make everyone happy. Don't forget that we have 5 starting pitchers not named Casey Coleman.
