    If he can't get what he really wants right now, why not sign a 3 year deal now and then another one when that's up. If someone does end up giving him a 6-8 year deal at 25 mil/year, then good for him, but if the best that's offered is either 3 years at 26 mil or 5-6 at 20 mil he might prefer take his chances with the 3 year now and another deal when that's up. Pretty much what Adam Dunn did in '09.

    Manny Corpas had one lights out year in 2007. Other than that he was below average at best. We'd do just as well to give Joe Borowskie a call. Knowing how to spell a player's name is pretty crucial if you're going to make a flippant reference to a reliever from long ago. I think everyone had a pretty good idea who I was talking a out. It wasn't that long ago. It's not like I was referencing Frank DiPino.

    Manny Corpas had one lights out year in 2007. Other than that he was below average at best. We'd do just as well to give Joe Borowskie a call.

    The only benefit to signing guys like this is havin extra bodies in case someone's traded. Reed would be a useful spare righty outfielder in case we trade Byrd or Soriano, although that Sappelt guy now makes him obsolete. As for Corpas and Sonnenstine we have a plethora of big league ready middle relievers, most of whom the clocks already started ticking on. Maybe someone spelled coffee on Carmine.

    That's the one thing that everyone (especially the FO) needs to keep in mind. Don't settle for anything less than a perfect package because Garza is an ace and is still young enough, cheap enough, and under team control to help us build for the future. While I agree, he's only under team control for two more years, and he's coming off (by far) his best season in the majors. Now may be the best time to trade him. If you wait another year, you could end up in the same position as the White Sox were with Danks where you're not getting great offers for him. Although if he signs the same deal Danks signed, I wouldn't mind giving him an extension. But by the time he does become a free agent hopefully things will be shaping up the way we want, so we can extend him. There's no rush to do it now and we can do it next offseason and enter the Cain/Hamels sweepstakes assuming they make it to free agency. He'd be 29 this time next year and if the near future's looking bright I'd be happy to give him a 4 year extension with a vesting or mutual option or 2. Unless we're getting a potential front end starter and/or a young impact bat, he's more valuable than settling on anything short of it.

    While I don't like the overcrowding, we have no shortage of guys that can be traded: Garza, Soriano, Zambrano, Byrd, Soto, Russell, Marmol, Baker, DeWitt, and Wells could all be traded. As for younger guys on the 40 man, there arent many guys I could see removed and going unclaimed. Cabrera, Coleman, Maine, Mateo, and Campana could all be claimed. I personally wouldn't miss any of them. Maybe Cabrera. Bianchi could be taken off and I'm sure we could work out a deal with the Royals if we really wanted to keep him. Side note: did they ever square things away with Samrdzjia? We declined the 3.25 mil option, but he's still on the 40 man. Did the re-sign him yet?

    Why do we have to spend the money now? Yes, Fielder would make sense for me, but if they don't want him, and there's nothing out there they really want why not save it until something comes along they want? It's not like they have a gift card that expires in the Spring so they must get rid of every penny of it. I still think that Fielders a possobility, and if not, there's Cespedes, Solar, and Chen but if we don't get any of them it's not like we have to blow the wad on either 4 Edwiin Jackson/Casey Kotchman types or even 30 Reed Johnsons and Manny Corpases.

    The thing is that the ball is fully in our court. We're not trying to dump a salary, an expiring contract, or an unwanted player here. We're trying to load up on young talent so if nobody wants to give us what we want we take our ball and go home.

    Agreed. You can invite anyone you want to spring training. Also, we could just be stocking up on all of this inexpensive flotsam in case we're able to trade some of the current guys assuming they don't mind being spare parts.

    I agree they need pitching, but I doubt that they would move Myers for a pitcher when they are quite ready to contend. Maybe not, but maybe they would move Hosmer since they have two other good young hitters whose natural position is 1st. However, if they did get Garza and then signed Kuroda or Oswalt they might not be as far from contention as you think, especially seeing as they play in the AL Central.

    Or they could plan to have Jaramillo back up Soto to keep Castillo starting in Iowa. Or they could have just resigned Koyie Hill who can't hit his way out of a wet paper bag any more than Jaramillo but at least knows most of the pitching staff if they don't trust Clevenger.

    Yeah, Harrison doesn't inspire me in the slightest. I'd really love to see the Royals get involved. As great as their young offensive core looks like it can be, their pitching is brutal. I know they don't want to come out of Wil Myers, but I'd they want any chance to compete while they have most of their players are under team control they'll need better pitching than Luke Hochever and Bruce Chen and I really don't see them in the Cain or Hamels sweepstakes next winter. Is Garza and Vitters for Myers, Moustakas, and 2 lower level guys from their top 10-20 be realistic? I'd love Hosmer but I won't even go there, although if they want to send him instead of Myers and then something else instead of Moustakas, I wouldn't complain. After all, they have both Butler and Gordon to take back 1st if they moved Hosmer.

    I can get behind Sonnenstine. I know 2008 was many years ago, but I remember he was pretty bad ass when the Cubs felt on top of the world and the Rays knocked us down a few notches.

    Only if it's clear they won't take Z. Theyd take Z, but he's probably have to be given them. I can see teams being interested in Z with the dwindling pitching market but they probably think hey have more leverage than they do and will give up very little unless desperation hits. Z would be most valuable to us at the deadline. Best case scenario, he realizes that this is a walk year, and while he'd get a 9 mil buyout if he ever wants another contract his 2012 performance depends on it and he pitches as close to an 18 million dollar pitcher as he can. Worst case scenario, he does what he did the past 2 years and in July he has around the same value he does now. As for Dempster, he excersised his portion of the 2012 option forgoing a weak FA class in which he could have got similar to what Buehrle did and could well be the most in demand pitcher currently on the market if he hadn't signed by now because he wanted to pitch here, so he won't be waiving his NTC. Now now anyway. When June-July roll around, assuming we're not in contention which is a realisitic assumption he'll be more to accept a trade. Then again I assume the same with Aramis and Wood last year.

    Looking at his post history, up until the past post season, he posted very little and while he never professed himself as a Cardinals fan he was vet protective of them.

    Apparently upon leaving the Red Sox, Theo has become the baseball eqivalent of a shopping addicted former trophy wife who recently weant through a divorce and was left with nothing but the bare necessities. Either that or Billy Beane.

    No Kidding Around may not be intentionally trolling, but he's clearly a Cards Talk level idiot. He may have started off that way but the last few pages seem like full on trolling.

    Everyone needs a closer but if we do trade Marmol we might want to see which of the younger guys handle the roll best. Cashner might be the best choice but I'd still prefer he start. Weathers could be an interesting stuff. From what I hear he has electric stuff when he can manage to control it. Sounds like Marmol, Carpenter, and Shark. However, Dolis is the only one of the bunch with any closing experience but he simply doesnt have the stuff the other guys do. For some reason I always thought he was a hard thrower until I saw him in action.

    The interesting thing about this particular troll is that he's been around for aost exactly 2 years popping up sporadically at most and all of the the sudden he emerges from beneath his bridge with a vengeance because we dared to question the signing of Carlos Beltran.
