The only other move they made was trading Santos for a prospect. It's not like they signed Reed Johnson to a 1.5 mil deal. Besides, we're really in no position to laugh at them as I'll be shocked if they don't finish with a better record than we do unless they have a massive all out fire sale. You may have missed it, but they completely overhauled their coaching staff as well. They also have a much better team than we do. Probably not a playoff team but if they can get Adam Dunn and/or Alex Rios going and keep Peavy healthy for more than a few weeks at time if nothing else they'll have a watchable team which is more than we can say about the Cubs in their current state.

As did I. That's pretty disappointing. But then we wouldn't have room in the rotation for Jeff Francis and Rodrigo Lopez so that would be plain silly.

There are enough stone age GMs left that a guy with a .309/.348/.467 line with a good clubhouse rep will almost certainly cost more than 1M. Especially considering how early in the offseason he signed. But we signed Hoyer because we were trying to get away from whole stone age GM thing.

1.5 mil? Good God. Id have been OK with 500k but for other than that I'd just as soon have stuck with Montanez who some equivalent we could pull off the AAAA scrap heap. I guess it makes sense is Byrd or Soriano are On their way out of town but even then we dont need to spend that much on a broken down 5th outfielder. At this point I'm kind of surprised that Koyie Hill was non tendered.

When did Marshall become a LOOGY? He's like a triple LOOGY. He gets three outs, and they don't have to be situational. And they tend to be in the late innings with a lead. Where I come from they call that a set up man.

I don't see why the term rebuild is such a boogie man of a word. If the rebuild starts off with Cespedes and Solar and we can tack on a few more good young players, I'm ok with it. On the other hand, if they keep doing what they're doing now and relying on what we have in the farm right now I question whether or not were a .500 team by the time Epsteins contract comes to an end. Just remember, rebuild doesn't necessarily mean turning into the Houston Astros, and I'm confident that Epstein and Hoyer didn't just come here for the money and let their reputations suffer.

Garza has obvious value. Marmol, Byrd, Soto all have non-zero value imo. And Dempster and Zambrano could probably rebuild their value with decent starts to the season. You really think that Soto and Marmol have 0 value? Come on now. I guarantee we can get at least 1 top 100 prospect and 1 more of that teams top 10 for Soto and probably similar for Marmol if we were willing to eat enough salary.

Wow. That reds44 guy is a moron. They seem to be warming up to the trade in the last few pages and don't think that the prospects will be much of anything and they're pretty sure that that awful Coddington guy who seems like a poor mans version of a minor league baseball player is one of them.

Corcino definitely seems young and intriguing but those other 2 guys seem useless.

Aside from Garza, who I doubt they move for a lesser package than the Latos return, everyone youn mentioned was an expiring contract or an older player. If you think about it, the majority of this team is expendable and the phrase full rebuild doesnt necessarily mean turning into the Astros. Hell, I'd we traded Soriano, Byrd, DeWitt, Baker, Marmol, and Z and signed Fielder and Cespedes that would pretty much be a total rebuild but that doesnt make it a bad thing. If we trade those players, but don't sign Fielder and Cespedes, then does it qualify as a failure? And what in God's name do you think we're going to get of value for Byrd/DeWitt/Baker? If 2013 rolls around and we're not at least beginning to look like a .500 team then maybe. As for Byrd/DeWitt/Baker I say get what we can. Depending on who has the need for a right handed outfielder with an OK bat, Byrd could bring us back something decent. Nothing resbling top prospects but maybe slightly less than DeRosa but more than Fuludome. As for DeWitt and Baker theyd be either throw ins or maybe they could each fetch an intriguing low level guy. Never thought that Jamey Carroll or Clint Barmes would have signed for as much as they did so white utility guys seem to be in season.

Basically, if it were July and we were 15 game out I'd e perfectly fine with Wood as a return for Marshall, an impending free agent but it's not a good enough return that we needed to do it now without seein what else we could get, and if it was the best offer at this time there was no urgency to move him and we could have waited until mid season. Sometimes (like after reading your last 2 posts) I get the sense that you type streams of thoughts without concern about how well formed they are. ADHDs a sumbitch.

I don't particularly have a problem with the trade so much as I have a problem with the fact that they probably could have done better for Marshall alone or packaged him with someone else, but then again, maybe they were shopping him for the past month and this was the best offer so who knows.

I have a few adjectives for it, and none are synonymous with "classic" or "hilarious." Can we at least wait until pitchers and catchers report before the lynch mob forms? For all we know we'll end up with 2 of Fielder, Cespedes, and Solar. How did The Kapman suddenly become credible anyway?

lol no DeJesus will be anywhere from a solid to a very good offensive player and will be very good defensively. I wish people would stop poopooing that signing. Nothing wrong with having a bat like DeJesus in the lineup, especially at the price we got him for. However, when he's likely to be the 3rd or even 2nd best hitter in your lineup depending on what we get out of Soto this year, then you're in trouble.

Or we could trade Garza for prospects and start the season with a rotation of Dempster, Zambrano, Wood, Francis/Maholm and Wells and it will be reminiscent of the good old days. The sad thing is that wouldnt even remotely approach the worst Cubs rotation of my lifetime.

To be honest, I don't think it will be as long as some think. Attendance has dropped over the last few years, and Theo and Hoyer aren't going fill the seats on their own, nor will the likes of David DeJesus, Ian Stewart, and Brian LaHair. Ricketts went through a lot to get Epstein and Hoyer and if the plan wasn't to make some wholesale change I don't think that he would have kept pushing so hard once Luchino started getting ridiculous. I no longer have much faith that we'll make a serious run at Fielder but I strongly feel that a Cuban will be ours. I also think that there will be some kind of change at 1st base and Soriano or Byrd will be moved.

So far being the key term. Come on man, you're the last one I'd have predicted to turn on them this early on. If anything you'd be [expletive] on those who had. I'll admit, I'd like to know where this thing is going but we've had indications for a while now that the transition wouldn't be as fast as we'd like. It's not Theos fault that people chose not to believe him. I still think that the opening day roster won't be looking like it does now but I'll wait until at least this time next year before I consider turning.
