  1. At least it sounds like it wont be the 27 year old AAA junk baller or the catcher that makes Koyie Hill look like Mike Piazza that had been previously speculated because I can't imagine them sealing any deal.
  2. We won't be ready to win in time to get enough value out of that contract. The outlook clearly looks bleak now, but do really think that Epstein and Hoyer came here to keep the team looking like it does not for the next 3 years?
  3. Would anyone have an issue with giving Garza an extension right now? The White Sox get Danks at 13 mil/year. However, Danks is 2 years younger, has had an overall better WAR, and is a lefty which goes for a premium. Could we extend Garza for either 6/75, 5/60 or 4/55, or even depending on whether both he and the team want to go higher in years or dollars? I know we still have 2 years control over him, but why not just keep him for the majority of his prime.
  4. He's not doing it in the literal sense, and he's not putting a 100 loss out there or anything. He's just done extremely little to increase their chances to win next season, when they needed to do a lot. Unless he does something big, we've replaced Ramirez and Pena with Stewart and LaHair. I can't imagine that not being a significant downgrade. We've also replaced Fukudome with DeJesus, which will either be a wash or a slight upgrade. Our set up man's gone as well. Assuming we can have a healthy rotation of Garza,Demp, Z, Wood, and Wells/Cash/Shark starting pitching won't be awe inspiring but shouldnt be an issue. Then again, if we do trade Garza for prospects, then it can be deemed a full on punting, but overall we've taken our 91 loss team and replaced our 2 most productive bats with signifcant downgrades and possible replacement bats so I don't know how we'll end up being any better.
  5. The end result numbers were good, but the underlying peripherals suggest he got lucky as hell and it would be unwise to expect anything close to similar next season. If you're a contending team looking for a 4th outfielder or platoon guy, Reed Johnson isnt a bad pickup. If your'e a team with no intention of going anywhere, may as well just hand out a bunch of spring training invites and pick someone from the the bunch.
  6. If we could get some nice contract years out of Dempster and Z, pitching will be a strenght, but I don't think that it will be anywhere near capable of carrying that offense unless the stars align, Soriano plays like pre 2009, Soto plays like he does in even numbered years, Stewart finally realizes his former top prospect status, LaHair gives us a Ludwick/McGhee type AAAA player year and Byrd and DeJesus round out the lineup going back to being the 3 WAR type players they were at one point.
  7. It will probably be announced when the deal is finalized. It's still pending physicals.
  8. Which is something we don't have. No argument here. Which Prince Fielder is as well. I guess I should have specified. Brian LaHair has power. Prince Fielder is a good hitter who has power.
  9. We need him because we need a good first baseman = good argument We need him because we need power = bad argument. I've heard both argued. But he's not a good 1st baseman but he does have power, which we need.
  10. But it's still valuable. That doesn't address the issue that power is still useful and you should probably have it. All it's saying is that a weak hitting team shouldn't emphasize acquiring power more desperately than an already powerful team. But that's kind of pointless. Weren't people saying in this thread that we should ignore fielder's other faults because he supplies power which this team so desperately needs? This says we need good hitters, it doesn't matter how a player gets a wOBA of .380 only that he has a wOBA of .380. Nobody said ignore things. They said he's good and a perfect fit for a team that lacks a 1B of any kind. It also doesn't emphasize the fact that The Cubs have money to build around Fielder ofer the next 2-3 years where as if The A's were to sign him they wouldn't be able to sign another free agent for the next 12 years.
  11. It's the 2nd month, and it's almost the 3rd. And those were the two most important months of the year for putting together any semblence of a competitive team in 2012. . Aside from Darvish, the main guys we were speculating on signing are all still on the market, 2 of which aren't even officially available. I know everyone wanted Pujols, but even if we was an outside option, once Marlins, Cardinals, and finally Angels offers were made we werent going to come near that. If moves I don't like happen, I'll be right with everyone else bitching about them, but I'm not going to turn on Eptein and Hoyer just yet. If the Opening day roster looks anything like it does now, it will be hard to swallow, but we I'll give him until at least next year around this time. The fact is that our farm system alone isnt going to get us anywhere anytime soon. As far as near big league ready guys go, we have Lake, Vitters, Jackson, and McNutt. However, the guys we're really relying on are between 17-19 and at least 3-5 away from the big leagues, and who knows how many of them will even make it to AA.
  12. Yeah, I'd take Beckham too. Didn't realise he was only 21 but he hasn't done much of anything in the minors. The reason I said Brignac is because they've said they're wiling to move him and he shouldnt be too expensive. Beckhmas age will make him more expensive considering he's still younger than a good portion of guys out of the draft. His minor league numbers are weak, but the fact that he's a 21 year old 1st overall pick should make him somewhat pricey.
  13. The Brewers still look really good to me and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them win 90+ games. Even without 50 games of Ryan Braun? Yes. The upgrades to the left side of their infield were significant, they have some nice prospects they can plug in, and they didn't lose Francisco Rodriguez like expected. Even without Braun, their lineup could be something like Japanese guy, Morgan, Ramirez, Hart, Weeks, Gamel, LuCroy, Izturis. Not awe inspiring, but with a rotation of Gallardo, Greinke, Marcum, and Wolf and K Rod and Axford(assuming he doesn't turn into Kolb or Turnbow) at the end of the pen they should be able to compete and certainly keep above water until Braun comes back as especially if a good chunk of their games are against the Cubs, Pirates, Astros, and Cardinals(assuming they don't make any big acquisitions)
  14. My interest in Brignac is the same as Ian Stewart and Daric Barton. He's only 2 years past top prospect status, and while things havn't quite worked out for him in the big leagues he's still young enough that it's too early to pack for Japan. Personally, I'd rather field an entire team of guys like that and see if a change of coaching and/or scenry can get them going rather than dumspter diving for Reed Johnson, Aaron Miles, or Craig Counsell.
  15. some 2007 Cubs pre season acquisition news:
  16. Would I take Davis over Wood? Tough call. I don't think much of Wood's ceiling, despite the Reds poster that went to the thread and claimed he'd be our 2nd best SP (not impossible, but that would speak to a bad, bad season, and not to his talent level). That said, gut instinct is that I think Davis might end up in the pen as a set-up/closer type eventually. If I had both guys, I'd value Davis over Wood. But in this case, a lot would depend on what I'd have to give up for Davis, though. I'd love to see if a pitching coach (in this case, Bosio) could get him to do what Garza did - significantly lessen his reliance on his fastball. Even a mediocre change is useful if used well-enough as a threat, and his breaking balls are solid (don't think he has Garza's ceiling in re: to what Garza did this year, just speaking in general, but they are somewhat similar). Anyhow, that's just armchair commentary on my part. It's a tough call. Davis is 2 years older but has the former top prospect tag going for him. What I like about the prospects of dealing with TB is that I'd be interested in also acquiring Reid Brignac in a deal. Would Marshall alone be enough to get both? Maybe we could throw in a big league spare part like Byrd, Baker, Russell, or DeWitt or some fringe prospects?
  17. The big difference is that The Cubs should be a big fish in a small pond, not to mention the fact that they have the highest ticket prices in baseball, so good luck getting people to pay that much to see Reed Johnson, Darwin Barney, and Brian LaHair.
  18. I strongly apologize for the thread title, change it if necessary, but this was the only thing that came to mind upong reading this, which is proabably just nothing. Are Jeff Baker, Blake DeWitt, Darwin Barney, and Jeff Bianchi not utility infielders? So was Ryan Flaherty. DJ LeMahieu too. Don't forget Marwin Gonzalez. At least Jeff Baker, Blake DeWitt, and Darwin Barney can do somehing resembling hitting the ball, sometimes even out of the infield. Are they just trying to re-construct the 2006 Cubs so that people will be happy when they manage to put together a near .500 team for the following year?
  19. Jonathon Mota and Marquez Smith are system fillers. These guys are JR Mathes and Matt Camp.
  20. Claiming Bianchi wasn't so much a wtf move as the fact that we couldn't give Ryan Flaherty a roster spot but we have him one.
  21. Yep....most definitely this guy is also Hollandsworth's Mug...lmfao...at least try to use different terminology dude Wasn't the over usage of the we stinks phrase a trademark of another poster whose name eludes me that used to constantly post random images and he later turned out to be amother incarnation of CubsGM?
