  1. I agree with not being in love with Rizzo. I personally would rather gets Blanks for a lesser price, but... I think Theo and Jed disagree. I trust their judgement on this guy. They have done a good job on assessing near ready major league talent. If they get him I'd be mildly intrigued by Blanks if we could get him for James Russell and change. Otherwise I'd be just as happy to welcome Matt Murton back to our side of the pond.
  2. I like to see that. Basically it's what they've said all along. They dont need to trade him but they will if they get what they want. If the Jays didn't give us what we wanted, that's their perogative. I don't mind settling for the best offer on guys like Byrd, Soriano, Dempster, or Zambrano but Garza has real value and will continue to in the summer or else he could be extended.
  3. Even then, you probably want to give them a year or two before they really get their bearings in. By then the Phillies should be old and broken and the Nats should be sitting pretty although the Braves and probably Marlins will be threats. I was talking more in terms of 2012. This being said, unlike some posters and media members I understand that signing Fielder doesn't have to be a win now move and yes, it would be very good for them.
  4. I like Rizzo fine and I'm no Porcello fanboy, but that seems like a lot more than "reasonable" for Anthony F. Rizzo. He's still a year removed from top prospect status and that alone is worth something. While Porcellos still young, his stock has gone nowhere but down since he came to the big leagues. Lake had a good fall and was very good last year until he hit AA and I think teams might have taken some notice but he's far from a top prospect. Russell's a strong pen lefty but all and all he's just a guy and a replaceable one at that. I think it's very fair. I don't know how badly you think that the Pads want to unload Rizzo but if you think that a guy who's projecting to be a 4th starter, a high ceiling but very questionable prospect, and a solid middle reliever is too much then I don't know what you'd expect him to cost.I understand that Rizzo himself is a high ceiling but questionable prospect but that top prospect status carries a decent amount of weight.
  5. As long as we're having fun, let's make it a real blockbuster: Tigers get: Garza, Vitters, Jay Jackson Padres get: Castellano, Porcello, Russell, Lake Cubs get: Turner, Smyly, Rizzo, Headley If it's possible for a minor leaguer to have negative trade value, Jay Jackson has it. I wouldn't say that. If 2012 goes like 2011 did for him, than that will be the case but he did have a strong finish so theres at least the glimmer of hope left.
  6. Matt Garza -vs- Prince Fielder - 9AB, 3H, 3 2B, 4RBI, 1BB, 2K (vs - Cubs - 225 AB, 65H, 21 2B, 12 HR, 38 RBI, 50BB, 54K, .289/.427/.551 & .978 OPS) Albert Pujols - 9AB, 2H, 1 2B, 1RBI, 2BB (vs - Cubs - 311AB, 94H, 22 2B, 26 HR, 61 RBI, 53BB, 34K, .302/.406/.624 & 1.030 OPS) I don't think that the loss of Pujols and Fielder from the NLC is going to affect Garza as much as it is going to help the Cubs lose two big thorns in their side. oh come on what is Fielder's OPS in that 9-game sample? like 1.500 or something If we sign Fielder it will be irrelevant anyway. 8-)
  7. As long as we're having fun, let's make it a real blockbuster: Tigers get: Garza, Vitters, Jay Jackson Padres get: Castellano, Porcello, Russell, Lake Cubs get: Turner, Smyly, Rizzo, Headley Id just as soon get Castellano and let the Padres keep Headley. That way, we can give Stewart a year at 3rd to see what he's worth and if he's good we juice a few more years out of him until Castellenos is ready. The Pads would end up with Porcello, Lake, and Russell for Rizzo which is reasonable.
  8. You are really short selling the Nationals right now. 1B Fielder 2B Rendon 3B Zimmerman SS Espinosa C Ramos LF Morse CF Werth RF Harper? Strasburg Zimmermann Gonzalez Wang? Detwiler? Lannan? Bullpens always fluctuate, but I am sure they can get by. That is a really, really solid lineup. The front 3 of the rotation is border line disgusting. I would be thrilled if that was a Cubs squad. Again, youre assuming Rendon and Harper are in big leagues. Without them it's a very different picture. Take Fielder out of that lineup, and it becomes pedestrian at best.
  9. They still have a ways to go before the Phillies or even Marlins or Braves start quaking. As of now, they have a strong rotation which could suddenly be downgraded to decent or worse if Strasberg ends up Prioring out but as for their offense, they have Ryan Zimmerman but after that theres Morse who gets that Jose Bautista needs 5 more .900+ OPS seasons before people will take him seriously and then Werth who will need a strong rebound. Beyond that, they're very iffy and I don't know how far Harper and Rendon are to the big leagues, and even when Rendon is ready he plays the same position as Zimmerman and I don't know if either have ever played another one. There pens also weak beyond Storen and Clippard.
  10. I was thinking Jed & Theo asked for two of the three (which is what I would ask for) but all three? Wow. Maybe old rivalries die hard? A package built around Betances/Banuelos would be nice, though. If there is any truth to that, could be that they already have and offer or 2 on the table that he likes better than any Yankees package not involving Montero+at least 1 of B&B.
  11. I was thinking Jed & Theo asked for two of the three (which is what I would ask for) but all three? Wow. I'd tell Theo to go pound sand too, but also can't blame him for trying. If they can't get a major haul for Garza, might as well just keep him, maybe even extend him. Yeah, I would have balked at that asking price as well. I was hoping for Banuelos and Montero, all three isn't quite realistic. But if Garza isn't traded, I think an extension is a must, not a maybe. Again, even if Garza is a burning a hole in their pockets, they don't have to do it now. Even if Detroit, Toronto, Boston, New York, and Miami don't give us what we want now, it could be a different story in June and July. Who knows who will be on the fringes of contention and looking to bolster their rotation. KC, Cleveland, Colorodo, Texas and anyone else could be in the hunt. Except Houston, Seattle, or Oakland. They'll be well out of it by then. But anyone else. Ok, probably not the Mets, but anyone else.
  12. Can't imagine a more miscellaneous transaction than this. This being said, it's not like the Sox gave up a ton for Frasor. They were looking to move a starter when Peavy came back due to the surprise season of Phil Humber(shame on them for thinking Peavy could stay healthy for any length of time) and they gave up Jackson as easily as they did because they got Toronto to agree to take Mark Teahens contract off their hands because they knew St. Louis wanted Jackson as part of the Rasumus deal and they also saw Stewart as a decent ceiling young pitcher for the future.
  13. i guess it depends how you define star level production. hard for me to think of a perfect comp - something like victorino, but with a little more pop, lower batting average and more K's... or chris young with less pop but a better batting average, or bj upton with a few more walks. those are all nice players and great value while under team control... i guess borderline stars who will make an all star team every now and then, rather than guys making "quite a few" all star games. I see Jackson as Jim Edmonds light. Just about the same skill set, but not quite as good in just about every area. Hey, I'll take that in a heartbeat. In his prime, Edmonds was like baseballs Scottie Pippen. One of the best of his time but happene to play 2nd fiddle to the best in the game.
  14. Yeah, but we have 3 high celing CF prospects in Jackson, Szczur, and Ha, 4 if you count Rubi Silva but nothing in the form of corner outfielders. Part of me would just as soon get Drabek, Snider, and 2 young high celing guys. And personally I do think we have some high ceiling talent in the under 21 crowd, just none that we'll be seeing in the next 3 years with the possible exceptions of Jackson, Szczur, and McNutt.
  15. I'm starting to think that Garza is this offseasons Roberts/Peavy/Granderson but instead of trying to acquire him all offseason and coming up empty we're talking about trading him and we'll end up keeping him. Ironically, last seasons version was also Garza but we actually got him that time.
  16. LaRoche would be an awful option at any price. If we're going with a 1 year option for a lost year just stick with LaHair. Any other option we acquire for 1st should at least be a possible option for the long term be it Fielder or audition someone like Lars Anderson, Anthony Rizzo, or Daric Barton depending on the price of each. Eh, if it's a meaningless prospect and somewhere around 5-6 mil for the year, I'm okay with going with LaRoche because he's a plus defensive player at first who has always offered some pop. LaHair is still a bit of an unknown. I'd be fine trotting out LaHair as a stopgap, but I don't think LaRoche, on the cheap, for one year, is that bad. I'm not saying that LaHair is better than Laroche, just that if the plan is to punt the season, we need to go for one of those younger guys who at least could be part of the future. Acquiring Laroche would be pointless. He has no chance to be in the future plans and with the team as is he'd be of little to no use. It's not like he's a guy we could flip for a worthwhile prospect package in July.
  17. Who on twitter, exactly? it's probably just a regurgitation of this article. only other thing i've found is this. i don't really see anything that would lead one to think that a deal is close, or that drabek/other stuff for garza is likely. I dont see why people are so against Drabek. He's like 1 year removed from being a top 20 prospect. After a rough 2011, I wouldnt want him to headline the deal but as the 2nd or 3rd piece to a deal I'd be happy to get him. Certainly over Gose who I still don't get why we'd want over Jackson or Szczur anyway.
  18. Nah, I think the only thing holding back a Garza deal is not getting what we want.
  19. the prospect the Padres get would have to be pretty good, which means the Tigers are giving up quite a bit here. Cubs might have to give up Wells to the Tigers to effectively replace Porcello. If Randy Wells was the only thing needed to make this trade a reality, believe me I wouldn't think twice. Also, I think the Padres would probably need a Cubs prospect as well as a Tigers prospect. Also, I don't know how appealing 1 year of Marlon Byrd would be to the Tigers especially when he's not much of an upgrade over their staring 3 outfielders but the Padres might have some interest in him. To rework things: Cubs get: Rizzo, Turner, Smyley Tigers get Garza, Wells Padres get: Porcello, Byrd, Cubs prospect for purposes of compensation(Rhee, Antigue, J Jax) In this case we should also end up with at least 1 more prospect.
  20. Not exactly a shocker, but I thought it was worth posting. Anderson and Rizzo probably make the most sense as they're both expendable to their respective teams. I'd love LoMo but he'd be a lot more costly, however if we did get him we could always move him to the outfield if something else came along. As for Chris Carter I think that Barton is a more likely target as Oakland appears close to giving up on him whereas they havnt even really started on Carter. I don't know much about Wheeler.
  22. WTF is that bold part supposed to mean? If his only other legit suiters are Toronto and Seattle, then I guess it's a pretty reasonable distance, comparatively speaking.
  23. Sounds like another guy using the term rebuild to mean slash and burn.
  24. Id definitely take him as a 4th outfielder if we trade Byrd or Soriano. He could be a spare righty to spell DeJesus or Jackson vs. the tougher lefties.
  25. But did they really wave the white flag? I agree that the move sounds odd, but the thing is, The Padres always seem to have pitching but the one thing they've always lacked is offense. Now, they have some good bats in Quentin, Alonzo, Headley, and to a lesser extent Hudson and Maybin and they have a decent trade chip in Rizzo. They also replace Latos with Volquez, who could end up doing wert well at Petco as many so-so pitchers before him have.
