  1. I certainly agree that DeJesus would be a good answer for that, but we're no more likely to get Billy Hamilton for him than we are Josh Hamilton.
  2. Another potential Dempster alternative off the table to an under the radar team.
  3. Marcus Hatley added 4 K in 2 IP with 1 BB. And Hunter Cervenka continues to impress. Speaking of middle relievers, did we ever find out why Antigua randomly got his ass kicked all the way down to Peoria?
  4. 8 K and 4 BB through 6 for Raley. Sometime next week, at least 1 big league rotation spot will open up. Unless we get back a big league starter, I can think of a better option to get it. Hell, I can't think of another option that wouldn't be wasting the opportunity.
  5. I think that between now and the waiver deadline we see a lot of movement. -Dempsters a goner -if were willing to eat that 90+% of Soriano's contract, the only thing keeping him from being traded is how much we expect back in terms of players -Johnson, Baker, and Camp are gone. Could be parts of other trades, could each be moved on their own -If we're willing to pick up a big chunk of salary, Marmol's gone. A lot of team's are looking for back end relievers. -If we're interested in moving DeJesus, there should be no shortage of interest. -LaHair could be moved to someone who wants a spare lefty, but at this point he'd only be a throw in -Tough call on Soto. He's another one who could end up a part of another trade, but as is I can't see us getting much of anything. As far as the number of actual transactions I'll take the under, but not by much.
  6. It's possible a team might sign Dempster, but they're sacrificing so much (first round pick and the draft money that goes along with it, thus making it harder to sign later picks) that it's pretty unlikely. Dempster has been fairly consistent, but he's very old for a pitcher (36) and is having a career year - he'll likely be overpaid and in decline under a new contract. I certainly do appreciate the explanation. Knowing this, they really could [expletive] him over by offering arb. I'm sure both sides know this, so he should ultimately accept a trade somewhere. This also makes keeping Garza until the winter sound like it could be very beneficial since teams might not willing to team's not willing to give up a pick for the pleasure of overpaying someone like Marcum, Sanchez, or McCarthy.
  7. If you're a team that is in win now mode, I could very well see them wanting a guy who's been a very consistent 2-3 starter for almost 5 years now. He has had no major health issues since his TJS, and there's no reason to believe that he'd fall off a cliff if given a 2 year deal. So yes, I could see someone with a late 1st round pick coming out of it for him. Word is that the Angels and Greinke are mutually interested in an extension, further whittling down what once promised to be a very deep FA SP class.
  8. Do you have that Guy Pearce Memento thing? I'm telling you guys, he's output only. Too busy posting to actually let information in. Well if you'd read what I said instead of just trying to make a crack at it, it was the host of the post game show who mentioned that we'd get a draft pick if we made the 12.5M offer and he rejected it. While I get that it was posted yesterday that we wouldn't, I'd expect that the guy whose job it is to talk about things might know better.
  9. The other day, it was posted that we won't get a draft pick if we keep and offer arb to Dempster. However, I was listening to the Cubs post game just now, and they were discussing trading Dempster, and the host brought up that if he were offered the arbitration, the Cubs would get an extra draft pick, though it would b better to get something through trade. He could have been mistaken, but are we sure we wouldn't get a pick? OT: the best part was one caller who claimed that the reason Epstein was trying to trade everyone, and why he tried to trade Ramirez last year (yes, apparently Theo Epstein somehow tried to trade Aramis Ramirez last year.) was that when they win, he wants all of Hendry's guys gone so he gets all the credit and not Hendry.
  10. Always good to hear. ER...read.
  11. I didn't realise that Carlos Pena was quite that awful this year. Egads. At least Luke Scott knows how to prevent younger players from acting like animals.
  12. With Monday's big league pitcher TBD, they should probably consider skipping Raley. We really don't need another look at Volstad (who pitched yesterday, anyway) or Coleman. Raley may not be particularly exciting, but he seems to be the only somewhat big league ready arm we have that has any chance to be of use in the future.
  13. Just when you think Phil Rogers has reached the peak of stupidity, he comes up with this gem. I would love it if this trade would happen. We could then try to flip Pena to the Dodgers along with Dempster or Garza. Unfortunatley, last I checked The Rays had not yet replaced Andrew Friedman with a chimpanzee.
  14. I tend to agree on the Garza not bringing in Olt, sadly. What if the Cubs packaged some other players/prospects with Garza to try and get Olt. Anyone we have that they could use, whether it's short or long term? INB4 WSR says Soriano You know me too well. But yes, they are said to be looking for a RH OF, and I don't know what else we have that they'd want aside from some of the guys we're counting on for the future.
  15. Based on almost literally ten days? No. No, he should not. It's not based on 10 days. He was at AA for much of last season after what looked like a breakout at Daytona. Didn't do so well. Caught a lot of eyes in fall and winter ball. Hit the DL. had a great start at Tennessee and hit a slump, and now he's heated up again.
  16. With a lot less value than he has currently. The only way his value over the offseason approaches what it is right now, is if he pitches great the rest of the season. Not necesarily. At this moment, the trade market for SP with team control could include JJ, Lee, and Shields. In the offseason, many thought that Matt Cain and Cole Hamels could be available as well, but they're locoed up. What many thought would be a very strong FA SP market next offseason is now more limited. Pitchers like McCarthy, Sanchez, Jackson, Peavy, and Marcum's prices will suddenly go up, with Greinke to only real elite option remaining, an the Angels may very well try to lock him up, considering how much they gave up for him. This should Garza a very valuable trade piece in the winter, assuming that he proves he's healthy the rest of thisseason.
  17. Never even heard of future perenial Cy Young candidate Joe Kelly.
  18. Even if we don't move Garza by Tuesday, we can put him through waivers. No way he'd make it through, but we could still make a deal with whoever claims him, and if not we pull him back and whatever happens in the winter happens. Granted, there's always the chance of one team claiming him for the sake of blocking another with no intention of trading for him, but we really don't lose anything.
  19. Junior-Lake-Past-10-Days-O-Meter:.354/.404/.654/1.060. Depending on how many I Cubs get called up to fill holes left by trade, should Lake be bumped to Iowa?
  20. Yeah, when it comes to inside info/market evaluation KG is not a source I'd go to. He's often the first to admit that. He's great when it comes to evaluating prospects, but if you follow him on Twitter, people act as though he's a Magic 8 Ball. Then people get upset when he doesn't give him the answer they want.
