  1. Adrian Cardenas is by no means Javy Baez or Josh Vitter, but he's enough of a prosect that there's no excuse for him to ride the bench while Valbuena continues to be Sveum's version of Neifi Perez.
  2. Vitters with his 17th HR, a 3 run shot. And a great game for Rusin, 7 IP 1 ER 1/8 BB/K
  3. Garza to Arizona for Corbin and Pollock Thanks TT, but ugh. If that's the best we can do, I gotta admit, I'd change my tune completely on what to do with him. But, it's Bowden and I think he's off on value here. Either add Chafin or replace Corbin with Skaggs, Bradley or Bauer and we'll talk.
  4. I've thought that for a while. Especially when looking at all of our middle infielders at various levels: Lake, Alcantara, Torreyes, Hernandez, and Amaya could all draw interest, and some team that's has a lot of pitching prospects but lacking offensive prospects might be willing to swap a quality pitching prospect for one of them.
  5. Depending on the plan for 2013, if they want to make some quality additions through trade or FA, or even reclamation projects, that's great. However, if they plan on replacing Joe Mather and Sean Camp them with other versions of Joe Mather and Sean Camp, they should seriously consider giving those spots to guys like Watkins and Hatley who they may be on the fence as far as protecting goes.
  6. I think it was some sort of leg injury. I asked whoever runs the Daytona twitter feed if he would be back soon, but all they said was he was still in AZ rehabbing. I was wondering if the eventual move would be Alcantara to Tenessee when he returns and Junior Lake or Logan Watkins to Iowa when that happens. Alos, could they have just as easily given Tim Saunders a crack at AA? he was relly doing well for himself in his short stint at Daytona.
  7. This is our current 40 man BTW Chicago Cubs 40-Man Roster Chicago Cubs 40-man Roster 16 Jeff Beliveau Jacob Brigham 55 Alberto Cabrera 54 Shawn Camp 52 Lendy Castillo Jaye Chapman * 27 Casey Coleman* Gerardo Concepcion * 60 Manuel Corpas 48 Rafael Dolis * 22 Matt Garza ? 41 Justin Germano 57 Scott Maine ? 49 Carlos Marmol ? 62 Marcos Mateo 60-day DL ? 50 Blake Parker 60-day DL ? 40 James Russell 29 Jeff Samardzija Arodys Vizcaino 15-day DL 32 Chris Volstad ? 30 Travis Wood # Catchers 53 Welington Castillo 51 Steve Clevenger 47 Blake Lalli * # Infielders 3 Jeff Baker 15 Darwin Barney 45 Adrian Cardenas 13 Starlin Castro 73 Junior Lake * 44 Anthony Rizzo 2 Ian Stewart 15-day DL * 24 Luis Valbuena 61 Josh Vitters * # Outfielders 1 Tony Campana 9 David DeJesus 6 Bryan LaHair ? 21 Joe Mather 17 Dave Sappelt * Jorge Soler * 12 Alfonso Soriano 72 Matthew Szczur * That's at least 9 open spots, counting Mateo and Parker back from the 60 day. Also, there's all of the ?s who could be traded or dropped as well.
  8. Baker is sure to be off of the 40 man, and if it came down to it, I'd much prefer protecting Villanueva and Watkins and let Valbuena go. That would give us 3 3Bs on the 40 man: Stewart, Vitters, and Villanueva and 4 MI: Barney, Watkins, Castro, and Cardenas
  9. I don't think Volstad is coming back. I'm guessing he'll be replaced by another Volstad-like reclamation project. I don't think reclamation is the right word. Volstad will be 26, has had some major league success and will be under control for awhile. It's a little early to let him go with the current lack of major league starters. He'll be one of the guys to pay attention to for the rest of the season. Agreed. There's really no benefit to giving Germano or Coleman starts over him. Volstad should indeed finish the season on the big league team regardless. However, I would be interested in seeing what he could do out of the pen. If he pitches 1 inning a game, it should be less likely to be of the "of doom" variety.
  10. But again, with the upper tier all but off the market, depending on what happens with Greinke the mid-to-upper tier are likely to get very expensive, and I don't trust any of them with more than a 3-4 year contract. There's also the chance that the Tigers extend Sanchez, leaving the market at McCarthy and Marcum, and probably Peavy as I can't see the White Sox picking up his 22MM option. The Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Dodgers, and Orioles will all possibly be looking for starters. Unless we trade Garza, and the above is great for his trade value, we should go with Garza/Shark/Vizcaino or Reclamation/Wood/Raley or Struck.
  11. And 5 walks in the last 10 games. I really hope he can play a legitimate third base (though I still doubt it). IMHO, they should start giving him some reps at the corner OF spots as well as 3B. Next year, I'd love to see Ian Stewart get another shot post wrist-Sx with Vitters in the OF. If we can trade Soriano, he could have left. If not, DeJesus should be an easy trade and Vitters could have right. We could actually luck our way into a potent offense if enough goes right between Stewart, Jackson, and Vitters.
  12. In the DSL, it looks like Malave is quietly pulling it together. I know he's only 17, but does anyone know what type of power he projects to develope? Jenner Emeterio and Roney Alcala remain interesting guys to follow. Roberto Caro too. Doesn't hit for power, not yet anyway, but seems to have speed and gets on base alot. And I'm not sure if this is a new pic of Vogelbach or just the first time I've seen it, but it makes him look like someone who would beat up Macauley Culkin and make him eat dirt in a 90's move. http://www.milb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_596129.jpg
  13. Still a vast improvement over normal.
  14. Castro was number 16 in 2010, but otherwise you have to go back to 2005 to find someone make the Top 25. Tragically, that was Dopirak at #21. I stand corrected. You're right, I remembered wrong. Dopirak. One of those guys I remember as being a top prospect for years, then I look back at his Cubs career and he had that one monster year that catapulted him into the top 25, and he faded away as quickly as he emerged. We his case injury related or just run of the mil flop?
  15. Josh Vitters also with the Cubs! Never mind, that was just Shane Victorino with similar sunglasses.
  16. Great! Big league ready or not, there's no harm in it, and little benefit to keeping him in Iowa for another 2 months. Hopefully Vitters isn't too far behind him. That way, we can pretty much close the book on Iowa, and force Sveum to stop using Neifi v 2 as an everyday player.
  17. THAT'S WHERE YOU SHOULD'VE STOPPED TALKING AND REALIZED THE ERROR OF YOUR WAYS So I can't acknowledge that as good as 22 year old Starlin Castro could potentially be, at 24, Upton is now closer to the middle middle of the lineup bat that we need? Everything that Castro could be offensively, Upton already is. Plus you have Drew to watch for a year, and if that doesn't work out, you shuffle between Lake and Alcantara with Baez, Amaya, or Hernandez a few years down the road.
  18. Why? We're sending 22 year old with a sky high ceiling, who's under team control for another 5 years, a front end starter, and a few other pieces and taking a ton of money off their books between Upton and Drew. We're getting 1 top pitching prospect, 1 lesser top pitching prospect, Upton, and the shell of Stephen Drew, who they'd likely buy out next year for 1.35 MM than pick up their half of the 10 MM option.
  19. 1 of Bauer/Bradley/Skaggs+1 of Chafin/Corbin+ Upton+Drew (and we eat whatever they owe him) for Garza, Castro, and a few lesser pieces (nothing top 25). I don't say no.
  20. Nothing like a no risk, no reward pickup for the playoff chase.
  21. I'm with you. I'd love option B, but the question is how close to the actual package that we'd get is it? If the type of package that they wanted was being offered, he'd probably have been moved by the deadline. Now, instead of trading for 1 year of him + and additional 2 months for a playoff run, it's just 1 year. At least at the deadline, we had a pretty good idea of what else was on the trade market. We have no idea what else could be made available in the Winter.
  22. If we were to sign Garza to a 5-6 year extension, we'd have him through his prime. Good for us. However, the question is how many of his best years is he willing to give to a team that's building toward the future? He may very well want to know what the plan is for the next 2-4 years before signing, and I wouldn't blame him. I don't think he wants to be 32-33 years old if/when the wave of the future start shuffeling in, and then wait a few more years before they begin to hit their strides. If they don't plan on making the necessary moves to help the team win in the next 1-3 years, I can't imagine him agreeing to an extension. Also, I keep hearing about his having an off year, but looking at his numbers, they're pretty much where they've always been. In fact his 1.177 WHIP is by far his best ever and his BB/K are right around his career averages.
  23. The fact that we have this glut of infield prospects really makes me wish that we could make a deal with Oakland for 1-2 of their pitching prospects. We could build a package based around Vitters and 1 of Lake, Alcantara, Torreyes, Amaya, or Hernandez, depending on how close to big league ready they're looking for. We woulnd't land Gray, Cole, or Parker, but damn they've got a lot of pitching prospects and not a single 2B, SS, or 3B that can hit to save their lives. There's little doubt in my mind that Beane and Epstein would be able to make a great deal for both sides.
  24. Arizona Phil said he saw him in Mesa. Just an FYI, most non-Cuban IFAs sign contracts that doesn't allow them to play the year they signed (it is assumed Paniagua and Frandy de la Rosa signed 2013 contracts). Thanks. I'd completely forgotten about thay de la Rosa fellow.
