  1. If he had a long history of being right, perhaps he'd have avoided incarceration.
  2. I doubt that blocking Jackson enters into it. Striking out every other AB is blocking Jackson. The fact is that whatever Soriano does the next 2 plus seasons, he'll be earning $19 million doing it, and the Cubs will be paying at least 90% of it. I simply can't imagine him being a Cub by the time they're ready to contend. This being said, this is likely the last chance to get anything in return for him, even if it's just a few lottery tickets, and we're not talking the Mega Millions.
  3. The guy's only got one phone call. Why would he use it to make [expletive] up?
  4. Well that would certainly suck. Would also make the "balancing out the money" side of things more interesting. Maybe we're taking on something a lot bigger? Or we could just start from scratch and try and sell them on a Garza/Terehan swap of some sort and then revisit Dempster for Gould.
  5. If we could get Jurrjens out of the deal, that would be great. As bad as he's been this year, he has another under team control and I can't imagine anyone not being happy with him as the throw in.
  6. But hey, we ultimately ended up with John Grabow and Michael Burgess out of it. Circle of life.
  7. So we couldn't get Turner for Garza :banghead: but the [expletive] Marlins get him for Infante and 2 months of Anibal Sanchez :banghead:
  8. Yeah - they're doing the PC thing and denying until the trade goes through officially. Like they did with Soler? So the deal should be complete sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving.
  9. I'm hoping maybe it's just something trivial holding the deal up like Dempster not having had a chance to discuss the move with his family yet. Knowing that this was on the horizon, and knowing which team were the hottest on his trail (LA, ATL, WAS) shouldn't he have had the discussion by now? And more importantly, shouldn't Theo and Jed have gotten his approval by now? I really hope he doesn't [expletive] us like Lee did the Astros. Sure, they moved him like the next day but got an inferior return.
  10. fffffffffuuuuuuuuuu This would matter if Demp were scheduled to start today.
  11. Has Dempster been spotted in a Las Vegas bar doing the Tomahawk Chop?
  12. We're supposedly getting something else to "offset the money."
  13. Has to be Dempster or Greinke. I can't see Liriano as an upgrade over what they have.
  14. I'm not sure if he's still eligible for rookie status, but if so he has a very real chance of winning ROY & MVP. I think Cano and Cabrera would be the main guys standing in his way. He's already at a 6.0 WAR, and he didn't get called up until a month into the season, I believe.
  15. Might I suggest skipping Raley's start for a few days? Dempster's spot's due up Wednesday, and Raley's the last of our backup plans who has yet to prove that he's horrible. Just saying.
  16. Would Dempster accepting the 1 year arb offer be the worst thing in the world? Assuming they plan on putting something resembling a competitive team on the field next year. Assuming that Hamels resigns, teams which offseason plans revolved around him could suddenly start offering guys like Marcum, Sanchez, Jackson, and McCarthy deals in the 5/65-75 neighborhood. If this were to happen, I'd gladly pay 12.5 or whatever for 1 more year of Dempster. Maholm could then be shopped, and while we won't be getting anything resembling Lee, Gould, or Rubby for him, his 6 mil option should make him an attractive option to teams looking for mid-back end help.
  17. http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/article/media_slots/photos/000/496/412/cubs_superheroes2_original_original.jpg?1343047519 Here's some of the Cubs in Super Hero garb. I could be wrong, but I think that Captain America is Dolis, meaning that this couldn't have been taken long before he was informed of his demotion. The thought of Hellboy Sveum breaking the news to Captain America Dolis reminds me of the episode of The Office where Michael has to fire the guy at the Halloween party.
  18. Some nice pitching from Struck and Rosscup after getting roughed up in their previous outtings. I wish I could say the same about McNutt.
  19. I have to assume that Carlos Quentin's extension is good for the Soriano market. Not sure who else is out there for teams looking for offense.
  20. The last 10 games, Candelerio is a dreadful 7-35. However, he also has 7 walks, 6 of which came in the last 3. Could it be that they've Instructed him to work on his walks, which is what initially made him stand out in the DSL?
  21. Travis Wood will soon rue the day that he picked up a copy of Single Inning Implosions for Dummies, by Chris Volstad.
  22. Is that the term for one who closely follows Cubs related Twitter posts? If so, yes I am.
  23. Watching the White Sox game whilst waiting for the Cubs to start. They were discussing the Tigers using Jacob Turner as a trade chip for veteran pitching and Hawk says that at some point, The Tigers have to stop trading away their young players. Really Hawk? Even Kenny Williams must have had a good laugh at that.
