  1. 68 AB must not be enough to get SCS in a lather about his .397 BA and 1.006 OPS. wait till he's 28 I've liked Lake all along. He's 23 and in AAA. Hes an actual prospect and should be treated as such. Looks like he could end up at least a very good super sub. Not sure what I should be saying at this point. If I get overly gung-ho about a AAAA slugger it's because they're a AAAA slugger and if there's a spot for him and/or we're not going anywhere, may as well let them tee off at the big league level until pitchers learn not to throw them any more welcome to the show straight fastballs.
  2. Don't look now, but the Blue Jays are on a 9 game win streak. Still in last, but finally at .500 and 5 out of a Wild Card spot. We should probably pencil them back in as a possible trade partner.
  3. Sure, but once you start looking at his injury history, it's hard to say that it shouldn't have been easier to say earlier. On one hand, like the A's, the Braves are one of those teams that are not going to give up a potential front end starter unless they're not very optimistic as to his overall prognosis. On the other hand, I think that we did a great job selling high on Maholm. Even if we kept him and picked up his option, it takes away that extra year that came with the rental. He was. 29 at the time, and unlikely to have been kept around beyond 2013 either way. The fact that we got a player of Vizcaino's potential for him is a pretty big win in my opinion, even if he ends up a reliever. We essentially swapped a year of Maholm for a guy who could be a key player for us for years to come.
  4. I'm not suggesting we give him away. If we keep him, I'll be plenty happy to have him at the back of the rotation next year. But I do think it's possible that one of the dimmer GM's in baseball may significantly over value him based upon his results so far this year. I know what you're saying. But I'm thinking that he could be more than a back end guy. Maybe not a sub 3.00 ERA guy, but somewhere between the the two. Then again, when I think back end, I think Jason Marquis, so it's all relative I suppose.
  5. Would not his age and 3 remaining years under team control make him at least worth the gamble? Regardless of how high above his head he may or may not be pitching, I think it's a pretty safe bet that he's not Randy Wells and is a very safe bet to be an above average 4 starter and a decent chance to be a 3 productive 3 starter.
  6. Wow, this is an impressive amount of self-awareness, and an astute evaluation of Navarro and Gregg. Is this a new day for Little Lor-... Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. So close. But wouldn't you agree that the Vizcaino trade isn't one that can't be easily replicated? We still had the Braves, who were in need of at least a middle of the rotation veteran starter still on the line following the would be Dempster trade. They just so happened to have a broken top 50 prospect to spare. Maybe to a team in need of a closer and a catcher, Gregg and Navarro could be viewed as comparable to Maholm and Johnson to a team in need of a starting pitcher and a 4th OF/RH bat. Still, if Maholm didn't have that 2013 option, my bet is that we don't walk away with Vizcaino, broken or otherwise.
  7. Whatever happened to Justin Upton? Last I checked, he was tearing up the world. Now he's down to .240/.804. When I first looked, I thought that was B.J.'s line, but no, he's at .171/.577, making Starlin Castro look like a replacement level player. And then there's Jason Heyward who's a step above Castro at .215/.664. Overall, aside from Freeman that offense has been brutal, yet they remain comfortably in 1st place. Must be doing it via pitching. But we have awful offense and have had great pitching. At least the guy who pitch the first 6-7 innings of the game. I guess that must be it.
  8. Ugh, why is that that if the most middling of big leaguers has a hang nail, it's plastered all over Twitter within 10 minutes, but in the minors, a top prospect can be pulled from a game and it can be days before we know why?
  9. The everyone has a price argument needs to go. Obviously, if somebody is willing to overpay for him, we're all ears. However, theres no reason to agressivley shop Wood or anyone else that figures to be a factor in 2014 and beyond. The bottom line is that there's a world of space between agressively shopping a player and a player being labeled untouchable. Most players considered untouchable by their fans tend to fall somewhere in this space.
  10. Sean Burroughs is on the team that the Smokies are playing. And I checked, it is that Sean Burroughs. It seems so long ago that he was a thing.
  11. It does if we want to get something resembling value in return for him. It really doesn't matter if they do or not; The Plan doesn't hinge on the paltry, expensive return they'd get for a year of old, breaking down Soriano. It doesn't hinge on it, but every little bit helps. THE POINT, o obtuse one, is that Castro having a bad year and Soriano having a bad year, in 2013, are vastly different things. If Soriano stinks the rest of the way it really doesn't impact things. If Castro stinks, they're [expletive]. Well of course Castro having a bad year is a much bigger deal than Soriano having a bad year. Which is why I hadn't even noticed Soriano struggling. Last I checked he was at .270 with a .700something OPS.

  14. I was so wrapped up in Starlin Castro's spiral into oblivion that I didn't notice Soriano joining him for the ride.
  15. I'm not of the impression that Theo/Jed are going to steal away outlandish hauls of prospects. But, Detroit has shown that they're willing to trade their top prospects to "win now." Albeit for better returns than what we're offering. And I don't expect Castellanos for those 2, but would it surprise me to see Castellanos moved for a need filling package other worldly better than what we could put together? I don't think those players are out there and available, but I'd guess he's moved to fill one if not both of those needs. In comparison, where is Castellanos as a prospect, compared to Jacob Turner, Andrew Miller, and Cameron Maybin were at the times they were traded? There's a reason that Gregg's been floating around the league ever since we traded a portly pitching prospect for him. Maybe we caught lighting in a bottle, maybe Bosio is a miracle worker. In either case, he's a 34 year old free agent to be, and if I were a betting man, I'd put my chips on the remainder of his career resembling 2009-2012 more so than the month or so we've had him. Considering that we got Gregg for a roster spot and Navarro for not much more, if we could get anything worth slotting into our top 10-15 for them, it would be a huge win.
  16. Step 1. Trade Gregg to the Tigers. Step 2. Sign Valverde Step 3. Hope for insane 1-2 month resurgence from Valverde Step 4. Trade Valverde Step 5. Profit
  17. The Tigers desperately need to replace Valverde. I know some of the talking heads on Detroit sports radio would give up Castellanos in a deal for a closer or catcher. Would a Gregg & Navarro for Castellanos be starting point? Anyone else in the DET system worth targeting instead? I assume J McCann is off limits, since C is such a hole for them. It might be a decent ending point, assuming the starting point was exceptional. Maybe I'm underestimating Gregg's value. Where would you start? You mean overestimating. I'm talking from Detroit's point of view. Gregg's been great for us, and Navarro's been a pleasant surprise, but nobody's going to give up a top 20 prospect for a pair of journeymen, especially with both impending free agents. Even WSR thinks that's madness. I'm thinking that last years Vizcaino trade has lead some think that Theo's capable of outworldly things, when in reality he lucked into a perfect storm.
  18. The not hot list is generous for Brett. Is there a Small Step Above Ty Wright List?

  20. Maybe we should dedicate this thread to remembering the good times rather than dwelling on the bad? Motion to rename it The Starlin Castro Memorial Thread.
  21. I don't know the full story on him, but I do know that people were shocked that he made to #5 in the draft just 2 years ago. He had a pretty good year in rookie league in 2012, but has been pretty awful through 60 games this year. So assuming that the problem is one they feel as though is fixable, yeah, they'll jump at the chance. And I mean if they feel as though is fixable, not if we feel as though it is. So even if they feel he's 25% boom, 75% bust he'd be a pretty good gamble if the other options have a 75% chance of being a decent big leaguer and 25% to end up in Japan.
  22. I didn't say I would; I said that due to his being a former mega prospect, I wouldn't be surprised if Theo would. One of the steengths of this regime is scouting, so if Starling were the centerpiece and 2-4 other pieces were involved, knowing that they have the ability to make the most out of those 2-4 other pieces.
  23. How's your doom boner, half mast? Full-blown. Our superstar, long-term extension SS is suddenly a full win below replacement nearly halfway through the season. Edit: There we are, .598. Hard not to have one when the golden boy turns into Cesar Izturis overnight.
