  1. Even if Braun could have appealed and get the suspension lowered, it was wise of both him and the Brewers to have him take off the rest of a lost season rather than even 25 games next year when they might have a chance. On a deeper note, not only does it further tarnish Braun's legacy, but also that of the Brewers. When they gave him the contract that they did, they essentially chose him over Fielder as the face of their franchise for a generation.
  2. My assumption is that the only reason we're getting a PTBNL instead of Ramirez right off the bat is because they were still awaiting Ramirez' medical results and wanted to make sure that Garza didn't pitch before they got him, but also didn't want to run into another Brigham situation if they did pull the trigger with Ramirez, and he turned out to be damaged goods.
  3. This is what I'm wondering. I'm sure hoping we've not given up on him as a starter. He pretty much did everything they could have hoped for in AA, so if it is a long term move, I'd guess it's because they feel as though they see him as a potential late inning guy in relief but more of a middling 4-5 guy as a starter. That or they just feel as though they'll have more need for him in relief than the rotation. Don't ask me how I came up with that expert analysis, just that I can't think of any other reason based on his AA stats.
  4. Unless something happens in the next several hours, Garza's next final start in a Cubs uniform will be against Tyler Skaggs. Any chance we can just swap starting pitchers with the D Backs before the game? :beg:
  5. Like Olt, Gary Brown would be a nice 2nd or 3rd piece, but certainly not a centerpiece. Even then, he makes me think of some awful hybrid of Gary Scott and Brant Brown.
  6. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/07/pirates-enter-the-garza-derby/ Don't know if that's him throwing names out that might be involved or actual sourced rumor. No chance of their coming out of Josh Bell?
  7. I see no reason for concern about this. This isn't 35 year Dempster for a return that would never come around again falling through. This is 30 year old Garza for a decent package falling through. If we don't trade him to Texas for a decent package this week, we'll trade him elsewhere for a decent package in the next week or two. Worst case scenario is that we end up with a slightly better package than we got for Dempster.
  8. Marlin is the best. That's pretty bad news, but the delay makes more sense now. That's also the opposite of what everyone involved(from either city) is reporting, so, lest I slit my wrists with occam's razor, it's unlikely to me that not only are all the other sources wrong(abty, Arguello/Loxas, TR Sullivan, etc), but they're wrong in the opposite direction. Interesting. I didn't realize it was being corroborated by a bunch of other sources. There's been some disagreement on whether it was a Texas pitcher or hitter that had the injury hangup(abty thinks Olt, Arguello/Loxas think a pitcher), but yeah, it seemed pretty widely accepted that it was a Ranger prospect's health that nixed it. Reports are that we have no shortage of potential trade partners for Garza. If there were any health concern, I'm sure their intel is superior to that of Marlin. If it did have to do with Garza's health, it's probably not so much a new health issue so much as concern regarding his past injury preventing them from meeting the admins price; or at least using that argument to lower the price. Not that it's not a legit concern if Theo's demanding some of their top prospects. Theo refusing to lower the price.
  9. If they won't move Chissenhall, I can only imagine that Bauer's nowhere near the table. @GDubCub: Sveum says Strop could be closer when Gregg traded. Could "when" suggest that Gregg's that other piece and he let it slip? I know that unless he completely implodes in the next few weeks, a trade is imminent, but you don't often hear a manager openly say that a particular player is essentially a goner.
  10. DeJesus played in Mesa last night. First game back? Does this put him on track to return before the deadline?
  11. Ironically, would be teammate, Mike Olt started the 5-4-3 triple play. Then for good measure, he hit a 3-run HR in the next half inning, See had we made the trade when we should have, the triple play never would have happened, the I Cubs would have had a big 2nd inning and a 7-2 win, and Arrieta would have given up only 1 run instead of 4, earning him the call up to take Garza's place next week instead of Chris Rusin. Fate's a cruel bitch. You may not think she follows minor league ball, but she does.
  12. Just remember that these guys who were drafted out of high school are incredibly raw. Even the guys in Rookie ball that never make the next level are probably better than I'd guess a good 80some% of the guys he'd be facing if he went the college route.
  13. Are you drunk? Nah, when I posted that, he had just been removed and was hugging guys in the dugout, according to Twitter. But yeah, it was a stupid post and wish I had being hammered as a legit excuse. It's that magical time of year when analysts and beat writer chomp at the bit to report every pre-game scratch, in game sub,and dugout display of man love.
  14. Trade imminent, this player for that player, drawn out for weeks, never happens, etc. And all of that. I just don't want a repeat of the Dempster saga last year, where the Cubs had a really good return ready to go, but that fell apart and the Cubs ended up with a lesser (albeit still good) return. Big difference. We were on the verge of getting a consensus top 50 prospect for Dempster, and it was on him to approve it. Everyone knew that if it didn't happen, we'd be looking at a lesser return. Here, there seems to be a decent enough package in play, but nothing worth stressing over if one or both sides moves on. If so, we likely end up with something comparable sometime between tomorrow and July 31.
  15. Is anyone else closely monitoring the dugout for hugs and handshakes?
  16. Ugh, I don't know how I feel about Neil Ramirez as the centerpiece. Wait, yes I do; not at all good.
  17. Except for those two notes at the end, that is. The article's from July 11, and he hasn't been DLd yet, but hasn't pitched since July 5. But whatever's going on, I'm sure the physical will reveal. And damned if he isn't the whitest Ramirez I've ever seen.
  18. I'm gonna go with something more along the lines of Ransom, Gregg, or Navarro. Would be too hard for them to keep it bottled up if I were Soriano.
  19. We've fallen hard since the delusions of Turner, Castelannos, and Smyley/Crosby
  20. Don't forget we also got Rosscup, who's been very good since coming over.
  21. Theo/Jed are waiting until Garza takes his afternoon nap to make the trade He doesn't have an NTC. Let him snooze away.
  22. Based on the past week worth of Tweets, I'm going to predict that we get C.J. Edwards, Neil Ramirez, and Mike Olt. We throw in either Ransom or another spare part or PTBNL.
