  1. Cubs have a better record than the Blue Jays, even with the Angels, and a percentage point below the Phillies. 9.5 games out of a Wild Card spot. Not entirely out of the realm of possibility, but certainly not worth putting any legitamate thought toward playoff matchups. Still have to wonder where we'd be if not for the disaster that was the bullpen for the first months or so, but that seems like forever ago. This team is been very enjoyable for stretches and equally maddening for others. The ride could be a fun one the rest of the way, and if we do happen to gain some ground, then I might just have to start mixing that 'Laid.
  2. This will make a lot of the folks here as happy as any other transaction. @BornOnThirdCubs: So long Paul Sullivan. No longer covering Cubs But still with the Trib. Someone named Gonzalez taking over Cubs beat.
  3. A few particularly impressive performances in the VSL Adbert Alzolay (SP, 18) 5 IP 3 H 2 R 0/8 BB/K Season: 62 IP, 1.16 ERA 56/10 BB/K Ronny Alcala (C/3B, 19) Remember him catching my eye last year, but thought he was an OF) 4/4 2 HR, 1 BB, 6 RBI Season: .347/.383/.543/.926 9 HR
  4. It's not exactly considered giving up when you use him as one of the center pieces for a front end pitcher. Now if anyone lost in this deal, it was the Cardinals who traded Chris Perez for a few unseless months of DeRosa not too long after. As he used it, "giving up" pretty clearly means "trading away." This, and also the Cubs including Chris Archer in a trade for Matt Garza in 2011 has jack [expletive] to do with the Cardinals acquiring Mark DeRosa in 2009. No, it has nothing to do with trading Garza, but it is relevant to giving up Archer. Archer was already well thought of even back when he was sent for DeRosa, but Cleveland still ended up with a valuable long term asset out of it. St. Louis did not.
  5. I don't know much about his stuff, but he does lead the Southern League in ERA, 2nd in WHIP, and 10th in K's. On a side note, the recently promoted Albert Cabrera lead the Soutnern League with 107 Ks. In 2nd, with 102; that would be Eric Jokisch. Wouldn't have guessed that.
  6. I'm not sure it was. Sure it was; just on their own terms, and that wasn't Garza's preference. Hard to blame him judging by the upcoming free agent class. Somebody's sure to give him a lot more money than we ever would have. Of course it would be their preference to extend any not terrible players on their terms. That's not really what's being talked about. I do believe that they sincerely wanted to work something out, but unless we were offering Hamels money, it's hard to blame him for wanting to test the market. If he remains healthy the rest of the year, he could be looking at an insane payday.

  9. If 2 of Rosscup, Olt, and Edwards pan out, it all evens out. Not that Garza himself wasn't damn good for parts of 3 seasons.
  10. It was worse than bad it was...you know what, I won't say it.
  11. Just remember, always tell Cubs fans what they want to hear; Never tell them what they don't.
  12. Wait, are you asking if Edwards cracks the Cubs top 50 prospects? I was referring more to 30. 50's too much for me to delve into.
  13. If you think about it, it's not a horrible idea. You have a handful of good players in various stages of their prime in Cano, Sabathia, Texeira, and Granderson. Then there's some over the hill players already under contract in A Rod, Jeter, and Rivera (who's prime never really ends) Their farm system is mediocre at best, and last year's free agent class didn't offer much. So why not line up as many bottles as possible and hope to fill them with as much lightening as possible with a bunch of former stars who could just as easily ride off into the sunset, but could also go for one last hurrah? The anti-Theo plan if you will. Certainly not a team with a future, but it seems to be working to some degree.
  14. So here's my updated top 15 1. Baez 2. Almora 3. Bryant 4. Soler 5. Vizcaino-still have him above Alcantara despite mid season rankings based on pedigree 6. Alcantara 7. Olt *if Arrieta and Lake still count as a prospects, I guess they check in here 8. Paniagua 9. Johnson 10. Edwards 11. Hendricks 12. Vitters 13. Vogelbach 14 Cabrera: almost as if he hit refresh on his prospect status 15. Candelerio 16. Szczur 17. Villanueva 18. Jackson-likely his last appearance on the list for one reason or another. 19. Maples 20. Pineyero: lovin the K rates And after that, the conveyer belt becomes backed up with guys from Boise and below. Great problem to have though. It doesn't seem like that long ago when I'd be trying to decide between guy like Dolis and Kyler Burke to round out the top 10.
  15. If all health, the Yankees could field a lineup of: RF Ichiro 2B Jeter 3B A Rod DH Pronk 2B Cano LF Soriano CF Granderson 1B Teixara C Stewart Bench V. Wells Bench Youk Bench Overbay SP Sabathia SP Petitte SP Kuroda CL Rivera Imagine those guys together circa 2004-2010.
  16. So from our projected opening day roster we've flipped: -Carlos Marmol for Matt Guerrier. In the long term it's a likely wash, but it was that or nothing for Marmol and Guerrier could be flipped between now and the waiver deadline as either a throw in or for another PTBNL. -3 monts of Scott Feldman and organizational fodder Steve Clevenger for Jake Arrieta, a potential middle rotation starter with 3 years team control and Strop, a potential back end reliever with 4 years team control. -Scott Hairston for Ivan Pineyro, an intriguing pitching prospect. -2 months of Matt Garza for Mike Olt (likely Cubs top 10), a potetial superstar, though that ship may be sailing, with 5 years control, high ceiling pitching prospect CJ Edwards (Likely Cubs top 15-20) and a cost effective 4-6 starter in Grimm with 5 years control. -Alfonso Soriano's age 38 season for an intriguing pitching prospect who could squeeze his way into our top 20-30. Also, between Lillibridge, Gonzalez, Takahashi, Hairston (2?) and Garza, there's still several PTBNL (or cash) to sort through, though I suspect that Garza's will be the only one of any value. Say what you will about the Epstein plan, but it's hard to deny that he's doing just what he said he would.
  17. I was really hoping that De Paula would somehow fall into our lap.
  18. ffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuu For all practical purposes, when it comes to prospect watching, narrowly missing a home run is as good as a home run, even if it's recorded as a loud out.
  19. And why is Alberto Cabrera in the pen yet again?
  20. Vitters' latest non-DL stint didn't last long.
  21. Twitter is to journalism what ramen noodles are to food. Enjoyable in small doses, but I wouldn't recommend using it as the base of you diet. I don't believe for a second that we eat the bulk of Soriano's salary and get a fringy A baller in return.
  22. If Soriano is really gone, in one day, Soriano traded, Zambrano released, and Lilly DFAd. A tear shall be shed for what was and what could have been.
  23. Keith Law really hates Junior. I know it's just Law being Law, but I still think it's his way of blowing off steam at 2-3 years worth of Cubs fans bombarding him with questions about Lake and then lashing back at him when he's suggest that he was anything short of a mega-prospect. Nobody expects him to keep up anything remotely resembling his pace, but not a very good player is quite a stretch.
