    From what I understood of what was said at the convention, presently the plan is to just have an open air setup there with seasonal attractions like skating rinks, farmers markets, etc. That's what they said when asked about the triangle building. I vaguely remembered something about that no longer being part of the plan but had assumed some sort of building would have to be there eventually. I can't imagine that just stays an open space in the long run.

    Does he really have the right to be making such demands? I know his first few years in the league he was absolutely dominant, but the last two have been injury plagued and his performance while on the field has been pretty shoddy. He of course should be payed as one of the better LTs in the league; but to blow away pretty much the rest of the LT market? I don't think so. Of course he has the right to request $10m/year. Dominant tackles are rare, and valuable. They also don't make it to free agency very often. The NFL salary cap keeps going up but first contracts have shrunk with the new CBA. The whole reason the union was willing to accept that is they see more money going to already established players rather than unknowns. If he can make $15m under the franchise tag, and his first contract was 5/57, why wouldn't he ask for $10m per as a 28 year old free agent? Nobody likes to pay running backs anymore. The league is all about passing and in order to pass you need a QB, a WR and a LT. But he's not really a dominant tackle anymore. And he's not likely to be franchised, so, maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not really sure what you mean by that part. The question was if he had the right to request $10m/year. The answer is that his agents would be incompetent to have the starting request be any lower.

    In the end this is all just negotiations. The Cubs have numbers in mind and the rooftop people have numbers in mind, and the powers that be appear to be on the Cubs' side. They will come to an agreement that in the end is going to involve a substantial increase in revenue for the Cubs with contained costs that would be dwarfed by the costs of building a new stadium. Ballparks cost $1B now. The Cubs do not want to spend $1B, they aren't getting money from Illinois, and no suburb is going to be able to kick in a big enough number to make it work. It won't be a rundown dump when they are done.

    So it looks like the norm is somewhere between 50-60 night games. I'd be happy to see the Cubs move into that lower tier of teams. As much as they want more night games, day baseball at Wrigley still holds cache and adds to the brand.

    Oh come on. This is really the least surprising part of this whole saga. I think the least surprising is how the Chicago media has been all, "Manti's story sounds good to me, makes sense". The same people who spread the stupid "amazing kid has overcome so much" nonsense in the first place want the egg off their face as soon as possible.

    Who said that? That reads like somebody else's interpretation of what was said and not a direct quote. "Get-concussed"? It was on MLBTR, I assume it was Towers, Gibson, or someone else in the organization.     I think it's insane to hate the 2nd wild card but be all for such a overly convoluted set-up as the one you propose. Also, Nashville? Your East League is a cesspool of 2nd and 3rd rate MLB cities who will all suffer by not having any big drawing teams come to their stadiums. You want the Braves to play the Phillies and Mets 3 times per season? The White Sox to face the Tigers and Indians only 3 times? You've just bankrupted half the league.

    You'd be better off with a team in NJ (Hudson County) than Brooklyn.

    There is not one thing even remotely stupid about that.

    That could be fun, but the problem is we'd be looking at a rewrite of the script when it comes to how the team will go about spending money on the actual product on the field. Presumably that type of decision is not close to happening. They would have to turn around and work the with the state and some other town to start the process, then probably go out and spend a hell of a lot more than they were intending on spending on the Wrigley upgrade. It would mean years of waiting for that new stadium while staying in Wrigley without any increased revenue streams in the meantime.

    Sure seems that way. Seems to me like the language leaves some room for things like extra night games and more ads, which is essentially what the Cubs are asking for in return of investing in the neighborhood/stadium. An extension "that would include a limit" doesn't say to me an extension of the exact same limit. The next several things are relatively meaningless. "A limit on street closures" seems like a reasonable request so as not to allow them to shut the street down permanently, or for every event. There's room for negotiation there. That seems to be something the Cubs should be amenable to. I don't think Ricketts believes he's going to get carte blanche here, he can't expect to get everything they asked for.

    I am completely opposed to the suburban ballpark idea, but if they can't get reasonable responses in negotiations they have to explore it. At the very least, somewhere in the city but outside of that neighborhood. $500M can get you a long way. They won't be able to use a move to another part of the city as any sort of realistic leverage. Plus, you need the land in the first place, which won't come cheap anywhere desirable in the city.
