  1. it's weird to me that people can't see the argument for this signing being puzzling, or not all that intriguing.
  2. It's not a terrible take. Their rock and a hard place status with regards to signing a free agent pitcher is driving this as much as anything else.
  3. this very thing led to an open revolt on my high school team, as the head coach preached extreme swing techniques designed to make a lot of contact on the ground. We hated him long before people really realized the power of power.

  5. It's not just Stanton, but Price, Heyward, Ohtani (not that the Cards showed a ton of interest in Ohtani, but he did eliminate them right off the bat), etc. The reputation of STL as a "baseball heaven" where virtually all players would like to be has taken a pretty sound thrashing over the past few seasons. The gripe among Cards fans was that DeWitt wouldn't spend the money. Now it appears players don't want it even when it is offered. Well, certain players don't want to play there, while other, more wholesome types still probably do.
  6. why would they do that? They suck balls and have no money. They'd be much better off ripping off the bandaid and losing every game for two years to stock up on prospects and high draft picks and slowly start to build a real team. There's value in an expansion or newly moved team to actually try to win some games and garner support from the new fans, but Miami has been here for 3 decades now and they are what they are, an afterthought. Why spend $75m to win 70 when you can spend $30m to win 68?
  7. The Marlins owners have no money and have made it clear they are going to get rid of all costly players.

  9. no, it's more of a desperate plea https://deadspin.com/the-nfl-s-quarterback-middle-class-is-dying-1820880389 Magary had him on the list with an asterisk for week 1, and that asterisk came and went during the first few weeks of the season.
  10. But isn't any "win this year" mindset in FA actually when you use FA to round out your roster with good but not terribly expensive players? Yeah, my gut is similar. I almost feel like it would be best to offer Pace a 2-year extension, so he can go into this head coach hiring season with all targets having full confidence that the Bears are in on this guy and system. And that is crazy to think about with how bad his three teams have been. But this is largely why I hate all those "trading up and drafting a QB was such a bold move" story, when that happened in 2017, and virtually guaranteed Pace would get at least 2 full seasons, if not 3-4, to judge that QB.
  11. I’d disagree. The Bears have some young talent. They need more and better coaching They have some young talent, but not much, and virtually zero high end blue chip talent. People keep talking about how Ryan Pace should ultimately be judged on Trubisky, but that doesn't tell the whole story. Mitch could develop into a quality QB but this team could still struggle to win if Pace doesn't do a much better job of filling the entire roster.

  13. the odds that everybody knows and nobody is leaking are extremely low. the extremely low cost of Ohtani also means he's not really holding everything up
  14. this is something that's bothering me about Trubisky and how the Bears are using him. The "first do no harm" approach to playing quarterback is not conducive to longterm success. You have to be willing to take chances.

  16. Funny that a NY Post writer talking about how a guy wasn't a fit for NY cited the oddity of him not even having a driver's license, when a very large portion of NY residents don't have a license either.
  17. because fox is still attempting to prioritize not losing (poorly) over player development, for one. He hasn’t put Glennon back in I'd rather he did, before he ruins Trubisky any further.
  18. The craptastic Bears visit the bad and dirty Bengals, and the fame features two coaches that probably should not have jobs. It's the last Sunday game until Christmas Eve (next game is a Saturday afternoon event). The Bengals blew a big lead against Pittsburgh, and may have lost their most dirty player this game. The Bears probably have to shut down their now 29-year old guard, leaving their outmanned rookie QB even more vulnerable to injury. Mitch tried to extend too many plays last week and took hits he shouldn't be taking, especially in a completely lost season. Chicago is a 6.5 point underdog and should probably lose by twice that. They have a legit shot at losing out the rest of the way and getting a top 3-5 pick, even though they face the winless Browns in a couple weeks. Cleveland will presumably have the #1 pick locked up, and will presumably fight a little bit to avoid the embarrassment. But it would be so like the Bears to wait until the season is effectively over by winning meaningless game with ugly play. *Possible midseason firing
