  1. This isn't based on any facts. But my take on these guys is Lieber can be a stable back of the rotation guy, with no real upside. Marquis may give you a few more excellent games, but also more disaster starts. I could see going after Lieber with the hopes that he won't be a disaster. Maybe not great, but not horrible. The only thing is, he's way past TJS days, and coming off foot surgery. You can't really hope he'll be any better than he's been the past couple years, and he might be worse.
  2. What is that from? Reason I ask is that I used to have an uncle Roger who drank a lot and was pretty much a jerk wasted or sober... which is why he was released by my aunt. My Name is Earl?
  3. Well, this weekend I'm staying home. There was talk of a Vermont trip, but with all the warm weather and rain, it's going to be a disaster up there. Probably get some work done around the house. No other plans really.
  4. I really dislike how often they try this nonsense.
  5. No interest in Melky. He's not any good. He's a fat tub who can't really play much center, and won't last long out there. He's also exactly the type of player the Yankees win on trades with. He's overhyped because he's a Yankee. If he came up with the Cubs nobody would have any interest in him.
  6. Something is up with these absurdly long contracts. It can't just be about showing fans you're committed for the long haul. The owners must know they have a lot more cash coming their way, or that they are going bankrupt soon and don't care.
  7. I would agree. Anybody read the Page 2 story by some made-up journalist giving the reasons for and against his votes?
  8. Perhaps I'm missing some sarcasm, but, um, are you comparing Derosa to Theriot?
  9. The average leadoff hitter had a 759 OPS last year, if that stays the average the next 8 years, Soriano has a good chance of remaining average for his position. I'm pretty sure you're joking, but in case you're not, I'd like to point out that leadoff hitter isn't a position. LF is a position. Well, then if he does fall below average for leadoff hitters, they can just move him to 7th or 8th, where he'll have a better chance of actually being well above average for his position. Problem solved.

  11. If I was a GM/Team President with a clear problem with leaks that I considered to be harmful, I'd try and smoke out the leakers, personally. Especially if I was from the buttoned-down old school corporate school of baseball management hired to clean up a horribly run sloppy franchise.
  12. I don't think it would be horrible. Once the field has been in place for a year, I feel like it will be able to easily handle the temporary rink. And I think it would make more sense to put it in a smaller venue like Wrigley, than 60,000 seat Soldier Field.
  13. I think people are marvelling at the length more than complaining.
  14. Ha, thats laughable. He did more in his short stint as interim team president, then sweater vest did in his entire tenure. What do you think he did? He is a marketing man, and by all accounts, a pretty good one. That's what the Blackhawks need, in a lot of ways. It certainly appears he opened the path for Hendry to get some spending money to improve the club. I think he was in the right place at the right time to pad his resume, nothing more.

  16. I'm pretty sure I've been fooled 3 or 4 times this morning by the Tribune headline "Cubs deal for Orioles leadoff hitter" not immediatley noticing the last work, "likely". It's that darn red font "update 7:27am" that gets me.
  17. This particular aspect of the trade has been discussed. We must also consider having only one guy who can play SS on the roster, Ryan Theriot, and no longer having our best option for 5th starter and 6th starter.
  18. Maybe they want to tell the players themselves, instead of having the media do it.
  19. That's what suit jackets are for (not to mention phones that don't stick out like a sore thumb). not everyone wears a suit jacket to an interview..i've only worn one once and i was definitely over-dressed when i saw what the people in the office were wearing. this advice was given several years ago...they didn't make little phones back then. Oh, well yeah, you wouldn't want to carry one of those bad boys around.

  21. Or the Cubs asked him not to play.
  22. The OF is probably Murton. Listen to 1300 for the updates live I've always had a problem with this. Seriously, if you know specifically it's 2 pitchers and an OF...why the hell can't you name them? If you know that much detail, how wouldn't you know it all? If you do know it all, what's the point of keeping it to yourself? If the source asked the person not to reveal the names, then they would be taking a big risk by naming them.
  23. I'd probably go with number 2, in the interest of easing Fukudome's transition into the majors. If he settles in nicely, and Soriano is struggling to get on (and the offense as a whole is struggling), then I think about the switch to #1.
