  1. I'm guessing, last year's record, and some sort of rating?
  2. I really don't think it makes a difference. Some high school teams play that long. Basketball encompasses almost the entire school year. You're asking a handful of student athletes to play a few more weekend games. In what state? Most states play their state championship Thanksgiving weekend. Basketball is a totally different animal. NBA plays 82 games, plus playoffs. NCAA plays 40 if you're lucky enough go deep in pre-and post season tourneys. This scenario would have college players playing 14-15 games, to the NFLs 16. Some states play TDay weekend, others just begin that weekend. There's no rhyme or reason to your numbers there, but if you are going to be fair, you should talk about the 4 preseason NFL games and 3-4 playoff games. NFL players are asked to play 23-24 games in a year.
  3. When they start allowing basketball players to run full speed into each other violently and still play 2-3 games a week, then they will. High School and college football teams already play 14-15 game seasons in some parts.
  4. Haha, ridiculous. What is so ridiculous? They cannot compete year in and year out. Neither can Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue, Miami, Notre Dame, Maryland, Wake Forest, NC, NC State, Duke, Syracuse, Iowa State, Baylor, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Mississippi, Stanford, Washington, Washington State, South Carolina, UCLA, Cal.
  5. Bucs are going to shock everyone and beat the Gnats. Tiki's unloading every bit of knowledge he knows to Ronde even as we speak. There's my bold prediction for the week. I'm prepared for the proverbial egg on my face come weekend :) I'm fairly surprised how many people are picking the Giants. It's still Eli on the road in a playoff game. They are coming off a hard fought battle that they lost against the Patriots, and teams have had a tough go playing the week after losing to New England this year. I just hope Jacksonville wins and beats up on New England in round 2. Even if they lose, I hope they hurt the Patriots.
  6. I'd disband the conference and fold: Pac 10 (10 schools) Big 12 (12 schools) SEC (12 schools) ACC (9 schools)+: Pitt WVU Syracuse Big 10 (11 schools)+: ND To division I-b: UConn Cinc. Rutgers Louisville South Florida Eliminating them from title contention?

  8. This would be my lineup. Gives the best 4 players the most ABs throughout the course of the season. I'd lean that way as well, but I think I'd prefer Pie in the 7 spot with Theriot 8. I don't feel comfortable introducing a hitter like Pie into the lineup just before the pitcher.
  9. And I agree with you. Ramirez may be the more naturally gifted hitter, and better hitter for power, and he has been since the two have been teammates. But Lee blows him away in the OBP category and I think that should put Lee in front of Ramirez every time. Aramis is too much of a free swinger for my tastes to be the 3 hitter. Ramirez is what Soriano would be if Soriano had a little better discipline and didn't get himself out so easily. That's more like 5 hitter territory ideally.
  10. Yep, MLB teams are free to sign undrafted Japanese prospects. They haven't pursued any of the big name Japanese high school players historically, though. Kind of an unwritten rule between the two leagues. I assume MLB believes it's in their best interest to have a strong pro league in Japan, which would give them reason not to raid all their prospects. Plus, while those guys can ultimately come here and make more money, it's probably not all that beneficial to sign as prospects.
  11. That's exactly what he said. It's exactly what every god complex next big thing coach who thinks he's got the system to beat all systems thinks. The only thing between him and a title is effort from the kids. In a way, you probably have to think that way. But it's pretty funny how insanely overhyped "buying into the system" has become with modern coach/gods.
  12. Seriously, Urban rocks. Who can't love a coach like that? You gotta love a coach who tries to blame any problems on a lack of player sacrifice.
  13. 5 positions? 2B and 3B. Possibly RF. Ward is at 1st.
  14. Right. If all he needed to do was play good defense, we could trade him and bring up Jake Muyco. You are right he needs to be able to hold his own at the plate but his defense is what is most important. I am sick of having noodle arm catchers. I'm sick of having impotent bats. Holding your own isn't even good enough. Unless he's the worst arm out there, a catchers arm just isn't all that important.
  15. He's referring to fantasy baseball teams drafting studs early. ARod and Pujols are going to get you your numbers, unless they get injured.
  16. So the sport that has hard checks into the boards, highsticking, and regularly has fighting is concerned that players might be injured because it's a little windy and snowy? These guys are getting paid plenty for injury risk. That's all part of the game. The horrible ice conditions that can come about as a result of outdoor playing, generally are not. Football players wouldn't be all that excited about playing a game a year on the beach.
  17. The point is, Soto could drop off significantly and still outperform the average. It doesn't take much to look like a competent hitting catcher. At the same time, if he doesn't drop off, he could be top 2 or 3 in the league.
  18. I think the list at the end is more of if things break right, these people could contribute for your fantasy team. Notice they list Colvin as well as a platoon outfielder, and the chances of him coming up for the Cubs for a significant period of next year is low. Of course, what they don't understand is that why other teams might start Patterson at 2nd base if they get an injury to their second baseman, the Cubs hate his defense to the point that they probably wouldn't/ I could actually see the Cubs being very willing to call-up Colvin this year and give him significant playing time, depending on how he starts the season, and how the rest of the OF looks.
  19. Eric Patterson, 2B, Chicago Cubs (starting 2nd baseman) They are projecting him to start for the Cubs?
  20. Soto not putting up monster numbers is not the same thing as being a hole in the lineup. .256/.318/.393 was the line NL catchers put up last year (AL was virtually identical). Catchers were a little better in 2006 and a little worse in 2005. The third best OPS from NL catchers were the San Diego guys who combined for .279/.349/.398, hardly impossible to reach. I think Soto is a fairly good bet to outperform that average. The backup portion of C is likely to underperform, but I think, combined, Cubs catchers should be able to outperform the average, and you can't really be described as a hole if you are better than average for your position. SS is a hole because it's bottom of the barrel, CF may be the same thing. C was in 2007, but shouldn't be in 2008.
  21. It would be asinine to allow Fukudome to be picked up via waivers. He's got to be in the draft.
  22. Why is there an article about Dunston being on the HOF ballot? Can't they start writing about spring training or something?
  23. I think the novelty would wear off fairly quickly if they played many each year. Maybe it would work to go with 2-3 per season. I wouldn't expect this to work as well in places like NY though. I think the smaller regional draws are easier to pull off. I really didn't like the look of Toews injury last night. I was watching the NHL Network and getting the Kings' feed, so they didn't pay attention, but Toews was going toward the net, and instead of going down like most people would do, he stayed on his feet but seemed to nail his knee on the post. Not sure if that was how the injury happened or if he tweaked something trying to stay on his feet. But when I saw him limping toward the bench I was not happy.
  24. Soriano is going to leadoff. Fukudome is probably hitting 2nd 3rd or 4th. He's probably more ideal for 2nd, but all the talk about breaking up the big right handers in the middle of the order, makes me think he will hit between Lee and Ramirez. If DeRosa starts he's probably 6th, with Soto and Pie behind him. Meaning Theriot may hit 2nd. I'm guessing opening day looks like: Soriano Theriot Lee Fukudome Ramirez DeRosa Soto Pie But the lineup will change early and often.
