I just like that the title suggests something could happen soon, with soon being the end of the trading deadline, which is about as far away as anybody could reasonably expect a trade to be made. -

he's actually not. sometimes he looks horrible against them, but overall he's been solid against lhp. Alright, alright. I get it, he's really not. But those times he is terrible looking, it makes one forget the times he's not. And why not? Gaudin may as well join the "BP" parade too. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the way he looks bad when he looks really bad. For a guy who usually at least gives you a solid PA, he almost seems to give up on a few of them.

Lou decides what relievers are used. Of course he has the final say, but my point is that if Piniella delegates bullpen decisions to his pitching coach moreso than most managers, and I've read plenty to suggest that's true, then shouldn't Rothschild bear some of the blame for abusive usage patterns? I don't know what kind of decisions you think he delegates, but Lou decides who goes in the game. Sure, Larry could probably do more to protect his young arm, as he's never shown an inclination to do that with others. But the responsibility lies with Lou.

The last time he was "finally hitting" the Cubs acquired him and he sucked again. He's 30 something and having a career year at home. He's been horrible on the road and there's really no good reason to try and trade for him.

I keep reading about going to the local bar for games I can't see at home. Am I missing something? Why does a bar get games that I don't? No. There will be no local bars showing it either. People outside the Chicago area are screwed when it comes to Saturday baseball and the Cubs. Really? I've watched FOX games that would otherwise be blacked out at bars before. Yeah, I can't believe that's true. My bars carry out of market games. Most every bar carries out of market games. The question is specifically about out of market games on Saturday afternoons. I know I've been to bars on Saturday afternoon trying to catch a Cubs game instead of the typical Mets, Yankees or Phillies game, but it's unavailable. That includes local dive bars, as well as espnzone and Champs types places with tons of feeds. The clincher vs Houston in 2003 annoyed the hell out of me.

Not to mention the start of a 3.5 day off stretch at the end the of the game on Sunday. Not for Soto. He's catching the entire ASG? WTG, Geo! He is flying to NY, dealing with all the surrounding issues, and probably catching 4-5 innings. The fact is it's not off days. Henry Blanco is the one getting off days.

Marmol has been used 3 days in a row 5 times, and he's been used in 3 out of 4 days 9 times. I guess I just don't think that's all that much for your 2nd best reliever. How many high pitch high stress outings has he had? We can't just use outings when it's convenient to use outings. It's high stress high pitch outings that should be MORE concerning right? How often in general, do the best relievers on their teams get used 3 days in a row and 4 out of 5? Is this normal. I don't have that data and I'd be curious to see it. I realize your point in that I don't remember what Lieber and Wuertz look like, and I don't think you've ever been ridiculous in portraying your views on this subject. I feel you are one of the most objective posters on this board and I appreciate that. Marmol is still on pace for 85 appearances, which is at the top of reliever appearances in most years. So, he's being used as frequently as anybody in baseball, which is a lot. The innings are down a little from when he was on pace for something like 85/105, but his frequency is still very high. It's a risky move with any reliever, especially one with a young arm.

Really? Miller is definitely better defensively but Barrett was better by a wide margin offensively while here and was able to play more regularly. Pitching staff was far better with Miller behind the plate. Once again, offense gets the glory but defense wins the game. So Barrett got Wood and Prior injured? In 2003 the team's ERA+ was 113. In 2004 it was 115. Basically, you are completely wrong.

The biggest difference is size. Schilling's a big ole' sombitch. Harden's kind of tiny. Curt has the type of pitcher's body that many believe is ideal for withstanding big innings. He also started his major league career as a reliever before being thrown into back-to-back 200+ inning seasons in his mid 20's, which may have contributed to his late 20's health issues. Harden has been a starter throughout his career, but health has kept him from approaching the workload that Schilling had at this age. He may go on to have the type of career Schilling had, but I don't think there's much similarity between the two.

Jeter is currently signed through 2010. It will be interesting if contract talks heat up starting this offseason. I wonder how he'd handle going into 2010 with an expiring contract. He'll be 37 in 2011 and if his skills have diminished as much as people think, I'd have to think he would contemplate retirement. Possibly. But 20 years of having the entire NY metropolitan area blow smoke up your butt could make it difficult for a man to walk away. And he's not going to be banging every 24 year old celebrity when he's an unemployed former ballplayer. Guys who just wrapped up a 200 million dollar contract aren't called "unemployed." They're called "retired." And yes, I'm jealous. Yes, but he won't be relevant, at least not enough for the hottet celebrities to spend their time with him.

He's a high impact starter that is also a tremendous question mark due to his injury history. It's not a double standard.
