  1. Can someone actually provide stats on our run production vs. pitchers we haven't seen before. i have a feeling everyone who believes what soul just wrote has been educated by Joe Morgan. I could be wrong though. I'm not sure about the actual data, but he did say it "seems" like. Insinuating that this is akin to Morgan type thinking is inaccurate. Morgan would say "definitely" and if you provided him with numbers showing the opposite, he would say those numbers don't matter. To me it does seem like that has been the case in recent years. If somebody showed me something that said otherwise, I'd believe 'em. Seems can be a dangerous word. But as long as you don't take what seems to be true as gospel, there's nothing wrong with pointing those things out.
  2. How does a city hate another city? This doesn't make sense to me. Chicago and NY have always had a huge rivalry in many things, financial markets, architecture, art/museums, sporting teams, etc. Paris and Berlin had a pretty big rivalry a few years back. A city isn't just the land it occupies. It's the people and attitudes that shape it, and history is littered with cities that hated one another.
  3. .270/.403/.545 Thanks Jersey...Not bad. So he's making something good happen 40% of the time, is this a big difference over the average of all players in this situation? I really don't know, but I'm going to assume the average player hits similar to what the average player hits overall, in that situation, something like a 260/332/415 line.
  4. Are we sure the scout isn't some whitebred suburban guy who simply can't tell the different Korean players apart?
  5. yes. we're not talking about sox fans here is there any chance Sox fans won't do that stuff, just to make Cubs fans look bad, or because they are pissed? This sort of stuff is going to happen. Hopefully it's isolated and minimal, but it's a mistake to think Cubs fans are above bad behavior.
  6. Was I the only one who cringed when he read multiple Harden is a great articles this morning?
  7. Whogivesacrapaboutstrkeouts? When you strikeout 25 - 30% of your plate appearances (30 - 35% of your abs) it matters. It's not the be all and end all and he definately offsets it at least partitially in other areas but it is still a negative. If you are going to tout the positives it dimishes the argument if you simply ignore the negatives. It's simply not a negative if his productivity is still there.
  8. We've had multiple NHL season, postseason and Blackhawks offseason threads on here and the same small group of people post in them repeatedly. The damage done by the previous decision makers was real, in that there just aren't that many people who are openly Blackhawks fans. There's probably a significant amount of people that would start to have an interest if they became relavent over a long period of time, but that's going to take a lot more than contending for a playoff spot, putting games on TV and signing a goalie and a defenseman. They still don't have any one player who has been in contention for the big trophies, and last year's season was no more successful than 01/02 and there wasn't much excitement built off that season. The Blackhawks are going to have to make the playoffs and win a series this year in order to move from what is now bubbling below the surface. And even then you are only going to get a relatively small percentage of people on a Cubs board talking about them. Probably half the hockey fans here are actually fans of other teams.
  9. Yea they really had no chance to make the playoffs the last 3 weeks but in the last 5-6 games they pulled it out and almost snuck in... would have been a quick exit though. This year, the Hawks should basically guarantee themselves a spot, barring injuries. The Hawks owned Detroit, they would have put up a fight.
  10. Who is saying he's the most feared hitter of all time? Adding Dunn is a pretty big improvement for Arizona, as big an individual improvement as any team could reasonably expect to get midseason. Just look at his br.com comparables, the most similar hitter is Pat Burrell, the most similar by age is Darryl Strawberry. He's easily the most productive hitter on their team now, and would quite possibly be the most productive hitter in any Cubs/DBacks series. He's not somebody who is going to turn Arizona into a 95 win team, but he's definitely somebody you worry about in any 5 or 7 game series.
  11. I think the seasons from Dempster and Edmonds are way more improbable than the seasons guys like Ludwick and Lohse are having. I'd say they are about equally improbable. Why Dempster? He was an All-Star with the Marlins before. The fact that he was an AS is meaningless. He's never pitched like he's pitched this year. He's on pace for a career year at 31, which isn't all that crazy, but, he's doing so 5 years after he last started.
  12. They do have the best pitching in the league though, don't they? Their lineup sucks, but Manny does improve them offensively, and he's by far better than anybody AZ has. They have the best ERA in the league because of Dodger stadium. Billingsley is the only starter without a heavy home/road split, and they lost Saito for the year recently too. 122 team ERA+, right?
  13. Booooooo!!! Sorry, but this is nonsense. If anything, I can excuse the Black Sox because they were all just regular joes trying to make it in the world with the man screwing them over and over. Pete was set for life and had it all, but he blatantly ignored a very big rule and repeatedly, over and over, violated the cardinal sin. Well I'm with you on the sympathy of it all. I definitely have more sympathy for the Black Sox than for Rose, but I'm just saying that a lifetime ban is a bit harsh. I think twenty years is enough. Rose has served his time so far as I'm concerned. Well thankfully others don't agree with you.
  14. If they did trade for him, I doubt they'd be looking to move him in the offseason. He would probably be slated to compete for CF time with Pie and Johnson, and may continue to spell Fukudome and/or Soriano.
  15. I think Wood will be re-signed because of his loyalty to the Cubs. Exactly... plus would is no where near K Rod... Wood will probably get 4-5 Mil only. Wood is making 4.2 million this year. That's after he only pitched 2 months last year because of arm injuries, and was pretty effective but not great when he returned. This year, all his numbers have gotten better. In addition to that, he's now a "closer" with 24 saves already which inflates his value. His only injury was not arm related, but was a blister. There's absolutely no way that he signs for so little. He'll easily get double that per year over a potential multi-year deal if not more. That's with incentives though, right? No. 4.2 million was his base salary that he got regardless. He then had incentives piled on top of that which could have made it closer to 8 million this year. If Wood finishes 2008 alive, I'd think 3/30 would be pretty easy for him to get from somebody. Maybe the Cubs could keep him for 3/27.

  17. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2008/08/06/SPK7125IVV.DTL It's not hard to construe this as playing up a player's trade value a bit. But there's nothing indicating a move is likely.
  18. Generally speaking, I'd prefer a manager talk to the player. But all Lou did was say Kosuke needs to start hitting, and that's true. It's not like Kosuke is injured and Lou is saying he thinks he's faking, or that Lou is saying Fukudome isn't trying. He's saying he should be hitting better. I don't have a problem with that.
  19. if the rumor is true, this is probably why the giants would do it. Take an expiring contract in ward and dump winn's contract isn't Ward like 3mil though...I really wouldnt mind Winn as a platoon in right/ fourth outfielder I'm talking about next year...ward will be a free agent. Winn is owed roughly $10.5m from now through the end of next season. Ward is owed about $300,000 through the end of this year only. Assuming the minor league PTBNL isn't anything special, this would be all about the Giants saving a very significant chunk of change.
  20. I remember at the time that I didn't realize how old he was until he signed. My first reaction was positive based on what little I knew, and the need for something at WR. However, he was clearly far from elite, or even second tier. But that's what happens when the GM and coaching staff can't develop their own offensive talent. It's similar to the line, where they had to overpay for Tait, then find near-retirement guys in Brown and Miller just to plug holes. Angelo's Tampa days were hindered by a lack of quality offensive linemen as well. This team needs to do whatever it can to bring in offensive-oriented coaches and/or personel people. I'm fine with being defense first, but you have to have something of quality on offense. Angelo and Smith will likely survive a bad 2008, but Turner cannot.
  21. You must be pretty young. They were pretty good and exciting in the early-to-mid-90's. I'm 21 but didn't start watching hockey until I started playing at about 8. So you were alive!!! Your point stands though, it's been long enough for most of us to forget they ever were good or even exciting. I'm strongly considering buying the center ice package this season. And I'm definitely going to opening night in the garden.
