  1. At this point they probably have to get a guy like Peavy in order to move Marquis. However, like leadoff, #5 starter isn't a position. And you can't deflect the negative value of his salary vs his performance. He's an overpaid mediocre 5th starter and because of poor planning Hendry will have to pay somebody else to take him off their hands. I agree about the #5 thing, but I guess the point I was trying to make was that the rotation is still pretty strong as is, with Marquis. It's "pretty strong", but the Cubs can be the best team in the league and should be the best team they can. I want them to have the best chance possible to win it all, and improvements are necessary for that. I don't just want to be one of the teams in the mix.
  2. Are you near Chicago? If so it will be on Local TV... Nope Im in Galesburg(near Peoria) and I bowl on Thursday nights at a bowling alley that doesnt get NFL network. Guess Ill be following on my phone gahh Watch it online!!!! nfl.com has a simulcast, and its a good feed too. Especially if its anything like NBC's simulcast. Uhhh did you miss the part of me bowling on Thursday nights lol. I dont think the bowling alley wants me to carry my pc in there while I bowl :D You really shouldn't roll on Shaboss.

  4. I'd say intelligent use is the single best remedy. There aren't too many important innings for a handful of important pitchers, but there are lots of unimportant innings you can slog off on some worthless guy's arm. Intelligent use is a fairly vague concept. Better starters can have a very material effect on a bullpen.
  5. Bradley has health and volatility issues that should keep his price tag lower. And yeah, I've been hearing Ibanez is going to get 3/30-36 the whole time.
  6. It wasn't 7 for 1, but regardless, giving up quantity doesn't really matter to me. I don't know a single one of those players. Anybody who wants quantity from the Cubs system can go right ahead and take it. I thought Gutierrez is highly regarded? According to the list provided Gutierrez didn't come from the Mets.
  7. How do you figure? His OPS+ the last three years are 125, 121, 124 and that comes in a pitcher's park. I don't like Ibanez all that much, but to say his bat is "mediocre" is pushing it. Yeah, he's been surprisingly good the past few years. But he's also old, and I'd really be scared of what he does going forward.
  8. Right now the Cubs are a worse pitching team than they were in 2008 and a worse hitting team than they were in 2008. The point remains they must improve just to get back to last year's level.
  9. The only silly thing is getting all hung up on the mediocre quantity.
  10. Many of the names I'm hearing hardly even count as prospects. And probably more than one is just going to end up released by the Cubs or signing somewhere as a 6-year free agent. We're dealing with milk here, time is only going to bring them further to expiration.
  11. You have no idea where the talks were and when that was. The fact is the Cubs were enormous beneficiaries of a player inexplicably listing them as the sole destination to which he would accept a trade. Without that stance by Peavy, a stance that could evaporate in a second, the Cubs wouldn't even come close to making the best bid for Peavy.
  12. Derosa is a nice player but he's not nearly good enough to hold up a trade for far better player. He's replacable, and just because you don't care about his age doesn't mean that it's not an issue. No, that production is not replaceable at 2B. Now if you tell me you are working on a Furcal deal after DeRo gets moved for Peavy, then we'll talk. But let's not make it seem that DeRo is some scrub player that can be easily replaced by a Fontenot or old ass veteran. Yeah, DeRosa really showed up in the playoffs when he fumbled an easy DP in Game 2 (opening the floodgates) and then went 0-4 in Game 3. Furthermore, why does DeRosa seem to skate by with mistakes while someone like Soriano never does? I can remember a few times during the season he made dumb defensive or baserunning plays, and nothing was mentioned. But he plays every position............
  13. Are you kidding me? Nope. Not at all. Marshall and Pie would be a nice package for Hermida. Maybe even Marshall and Vitters. Maybe it's not enough. If so, look elsewhere. I'm just baffled that anyone would think you just keep throwing more and more names at someone in hopes that it will be enough when it is obviously clear that the other team has zero leverage. How the hell is Vitters the 7th and 8th player in that deal? I'm baffled by how unrealistic people view the quantity aspect of this deal. They are worthless.
  14. Who do you replace them with? Hart, Cedeno, Atkins, Guzman, even Pie may not have a ton of value to other teams, but 1) they asked for them for a reason, and 2) the Cubs already weak system has no one to pick up the slack for them in the organization. It's one thing to not care if one of them goes in a deal, it's another to care if they all go, it's how you end up with Les Walrond pitching in meaningful games or Joe Simokaitis getting meaningful at bats. It's a stretch to suggest they'd be meaningful. Pie is absolutely worthless to the Cubs. I don't care how good or bad Iowa is next year. The OF is already too crowded for him and it is more likely than not going to be overwhelmingly crowded if/when they get a RF. Hart? Atkins? Cedeno? Guzman? You're counting on them bringing something to the table? None of them are going to make a difference to the 2009 Cubs, and there's extremely small chance that any of them make a difference to any future Cubs team. If you can get some quality for your soon-to-be departed quantity, you do it.
  15. Umm. All of 'em. Okay, so name a contender whose numbers 2 and 3 starters are as likely to get hurt and regress as Harden and Dempster Haha. Yeah, right. I'll get right on that. Any player can get hurt or regress. And Harden is more likely than any other to get hurt while Dempster has to be at or near the top of the list of likely regression.
  16. Derosa is a nice player but he's not nearly good enough to hold up a trade for far better player. He's replacable, and just because you don't care about his age doesn't mean that it's not an issue.
  17. i would not miss any of those players. The point is, why buy at full price when you can pick it up discounted later? This is a poker game, and Hendry is gambling that he can get Peavy cheaper, and I imagine he's right. Except the only reason he's even able to be in this discussion is becasue Peavy's inexplicable Cubs only demand. Imagine that fades? Then you've got no leverage. When have the Cubs ever been in a position to be the only team a star player would accept a trade to? It's a gift from the heavens that they had a month to bargain with that chip.
  18. Umm. All of 'em. Didn't the Phillies just win a World Series with that rotation? Yup. I rest my case. Give the Cubs hitters in the class of philly and you'd have a point.
  19. Not much. Most of those guys are just going to fade into oblivion. If you can use them as trade bait for quality, you do it.
  20. Yeah unless were hit with a ton of injuries, this team is a 90 plus win team again. Bradley production or whoever will be better then Edmonds when you factor in AB's and games. Plus lets not forget Soriano missed 50 games last year, with mostly a freak injury. Having him for more games will also help, and make up some for DeRosa dropping off some power wise. As for Theriot I don't see a major decline I still think he hits 290s, 350s-360s with 720s or so OPS. This team might not be 33 games above 500 again next year, but I think we will easily be 18-20 games above 500. I wouldn't be so sure of that.
  21. Umm. All of 'em. No way. Harden and Dempster are special cases. Harden is a guaranteed injury and Dempster had as shocking a good year as anybody out there.
  22. i would not miss any of those players. Well, if that's the case, why don't we go ahead and throw in 10 more guys as well and REALLY make sure we get this deal done? Why are you so hung up on quantity? They aren't good players. If you are offering the core, what difference does it make who the 7th and 8th guys are.
  23. I have my doubts that any improvement in RF will offset what will surely be a significant decrease in CF.
  24. #-o lol so basically it's like... if two of our 3 best starters suck and/or get hurt, our rotation is questionable. cool.. Except one is a lock to get hurt and the other is a very good bet to take a significant step backward. Are you advocating the 8 for 1 trade of Peavy? I don't know what 8 for 1 trade was on the table, but I couldn't care less if somebody wanted quantity from this organization. Take it. They aren't going to be difference makers. What I am advocating is the Cubs actually improving their team, which they have not yet done.
