  1. a ground rule double is in play initially.
  2. Lee? Fukudome and Zambrano to a lesser extent? Lee is who he is. Zambrano, I really don't think so. Fukudome maybe, but he's an unknown.
  3. You can get lucky in other ways than winning more than your pthag suggests. The Cubs were about about as good as they could have been last year. I don't think there was any underachievement. Typically you can count on quite a few guys missing expectations, which I'm pretty sure will come back this year. Plus, while having Harden all year will help, it won't help as much if he misses that time due to injury. If they add the right things maybe they can run away, but they haven't done anything yet and I'm skeptical about what they will end up looking like.
  4. I think the Cubs overachieved a bit last year and haven't done anything to improve the team this year. It will take something more to run away. The Angels only had 3 foes to run away from, the Cubs have 5. Somebody will likely at least challenge them over the first half.
  5. that doesn't make any sense, carroll can't control where he goes. maybe they're willing to let him play next year if he goes to certain schools but not if he goes to penn state? Don't they have to be released from their scholarship? I'm pretty sure coaches can control, to some degree, where guys go.
  6. Unfortunately, the core of the defense is getting no younger. The youngest star, Harris, is already playing like an old man. They still need to add to the offense, but are becoming desperate for fresh blood on defense.
  7. To be fair, this is kinda a big deal. I mean he is really throwing Kelvin under the bs here. I know coach wanted them to stop doing drugs, but not if it meant us not winning games. Also am I the only one who thinks this is more than just pot? I doubt very much that Eric would have thought pot was such a big deal. No way he's referring to just pot. You wouldn't think so. But I've known more than a few young athletes who were completely overwhelmed when they realized some teammates smoked pot.
  8. Sounds good in theory but absolutely terrible in practice. Trying to get a hitter to think in certain situations that even though this pitch is typically a pitch you don't swing at for whatever reason because of the situation you are in perhaps you should consider swinging. If you are a productive hitter, just be who you are as a hitter. Don't overcomplicate things.
  9. I've never liked him as a player. Hate is too strong. It's unfortunate that Hendry left the OF so weak that he was practically forced to go out and get Soriano, who is about the opposite of the ideal star. I didn't say that nobody here hates him or dislikes him as a player...I just take issue with the idea that "most people here" hate him as a player. You're not going to find anyone that isn't going to readily admit that he has his obvious flaws, but most criticisms beyond the obvious ones stem from the length and cost of his contract. I could never say that nobody hated him here so long as wrigley23 still posted. Most criticisms stem from his horrible approach approach at the plate and defensive shenanigans and escalate with the contract. I don't know what the numbers are, but my guess is it would be pretty close to over 50% that dislike him as a player. As I said, hate is probably too severe. He does some good things, but he's incredibly frustrating.
  10. Or more effeminately named.
  11. I've never liked him as a player. Hate is too strong. It's unfortunate that Hendry left the OF so weak that he was practically forced to go out and get Soriano, who is about the opposite of the ideal star.
  12. Anybody is capable of hitting anywhere in the lineup. Ideally you'd find some stud who can OPS 950, but ideals are hard to come by. Fontenot put up a line of .305/.395/.514 last year. Johnson had .287/.349/.446. Their respective OPS+ was 131 and 108. There's no reason either set of numbers would be unsuitable for a spot in the middle of the order, regardless of the player's size.
  13. really? he grabs her, pulls her away behind that curtain and all the sudden you can see her tumbling to the ground. The video I saw, without any sort of narration, didn't show grabbing or pulling. It showed him walk in at a normal rate, and then both leaving. It was pretty boring, like the one with Pierce at the strip club.
  14. Second time this year that Packer week has been dull as heck on this board. The line has moved down to 4 from 4.5 as people are apparantly betting the Packers. David Haugh wrote an article claiming that missing the playoffs wouldn't make this season a failure. I agree with the premise. I don't know where I had them in the preseason, but I think 8 wins was above the average expectation, and 9 would have been considered a success. It's funny that we're talking about the blown chances that have kept them from winning 11 already. They've been beaten thoroughly by Minnesota once, Green Bay once, and Tennessee. That being said, the 10 wins Haugh comments on is far from a guarantee. I'm guessing they finish 1-1 for 9 total wins, a reasonably decent season, given the summertime expectations. But that's only because the talent level is far lower than it should be.
  15. Combine the obsessive, narcissistic personality required to be excellent at anything with constant praise for aggressiveness and domination from an early age. With money, guaranteed contracts and a strong boys will be boys don't rat on your teammate mentality. I think the number is higher than 10% though, probably much higher.
  16. He's just entering his arb years, plus he just turned 27. Pittsburgh shouldn't trade him this year unless they get a boatload. He's probably got another year of high performance that will vastly outweigh his cost to the team, then you can still trade him while he's not yet a free agent.
  17. whether you like the sport or not, you at least have to respect the fact that hockey is pretty much the only sport left that is not full of greedy, arrogant, primadonnas and the players actually care more about the sport than the money. hockey players are generally legit bullVeterans Committee. Yeah, there are some Russian and Czech douchebags, plus Sean Avery.
  18. I don't think they are going to do it right after the game. It can wait until February or March at least. And they might not actually have to do the work.
  19. Actually I think I'd rather watch this on TV than attend. Going to hockey games is better than going to, for instance, football games. But I'm looking forward to waking up late on the 1st, then sitting down on my couch with some friends eating, drinking and watching sports all day. Skiing would be a great option though. Early accuweather forecast calls for wind, cold and snow, high around 20, low of 10
  20. I saw a video yesterday and didn't see how it was evidence of anything.
  21. Familiar with does not equal knowing all the rules. We played a lot of floor hockey, but there was never any icing called. I would imagine most anybody who grew up in an area that regularly fell below freezing during the winter would have a hard time avoiding any exposure to hockey. But then again, I grew up in a mostly white suburb of Chicago during a time when the Blackhawks were very relevant. I'm sure there are plenty of examples of people who never played NHL94, pond hockey, floor hockey or even got on skates. It was very easy to grow up in Chicago and never actually see a hockey game on TV.
  22. Watching the non-HD TSN feed significantly reduced my enjoyment of this game, but it was still pretty sweet.
  23. DVR? Are the tickets paid for and/or can you get your money back? If I had free work tix for the Rangers or Devils, I'd probably go to the game and DVR the Blackhawks game.
  24. Except sandwiches are proven to be good.
  25. Wood, Prior, Zambrano, Marmol and Soto are the Cubs produced guys that have made All Star games this decade. I don't have a problem trading prospects for very good players, but "proven" can mean a lot of things. I would hate to trade prospects, or lose draft picks, for guys like Jason Marquis who might give you proven average major league performance.
