  1. Wasn't that just in response to a rather pointless jab at American sports?
  2. I agree he's served his time from a legal standpoint. But has he served any official NFL time off yet? As far as I know the only reason he hasn't played in the NFL is because he was arrested and incarcerated. The league still probably has the right to suspend the guy as they see fit. I think a 4-game suspension for 2009 would be appropriate, and I still think it's going to take him a long time to be of use to an NFL team, if he ever is again.
  3. I assume rotoworld took that from the tribune article that hinted Angelo would be open to Burress. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/chi-18-bears-expo-chicago,0,1726161.story I don't think any of that suggests he's really interested in signing Burress.
  4. the other possibility is that ramirez stays good into his mid 30s; the cubs have a need at 1B and shift ramirez to 1B as he gets older/slower and put vitters at 3B. Yeah, well I'm not suggesting there will never be a use for Vitters on this team. I'm only saying that Ramirez's injury should not determine whether or not Vitters is traded.
  5. They are just trying to get me to punch a kitten today. In response to this post: "Let's go Hawks. If they are going to win the series, it starts tonight by playing a more competitive game, win or lose. They need to show that their defense can take the puck away and clear the zone more often, and we need to do a much better job of preventing odd man rushes. If they can do that, win or lose tonight, they've got a chance to take care of business at home." I get this PM: "WE OR THEY???, Today, 03:16 PM Let's go Hawks. If they are going to win the series, DO YOU MEAN IF WE ARE? it starts tonight by playing a more competitive game, win or lose. They need to show DO YOU MEAN WE NEED TO SHOW ? that their(OUR) defense can take the puck away and clear the zone more often, and we need to do a much better job of preventing odd man rushes. If they(WE) can do that, win or lose tonight, they've (WE"VE) got a chance to take care of business at home. THESE ARE BASIC GRAMMAR SKILLS! YOU MUST BE A COLLEGE GRAD???? LOL" From a guy who apparently looks like this, and thus can't be some dumb elementary school kid: http://nhluploads.invisionzone.com/chicago/profile/photo-33255.jpg To be fair, you did switch between we and they, which can be confusing to the reader, and is technically incorrect, right?
  6. Players didn't make that much money and fans didn't pay much to see the games either. The stakes have been raised on all sides.
  7. There were a good amount of empty seats at the Cubs game that competed for viewers. I wonder how many of them were hockey related absences.
  8. If this injury is going to have a prolonged effect, keeping Vitters around doesn't help much. Presumably Ramirez will be a fraction of the player he's capable of being if he comes back this year. But Vitters isn't going to change that. Vitters isn't going to be ready for 2010 either. So if Aramis needs to be replaced before 2011/12, they will need somebody other than Vitters to do it. If he returns from injury and is still good, then they won't need Vitters for a few years anyway.
  9. That could happen to every AFC East team this year since they won't have the same cupcake schedule.
  10. He's done that a few times this year, but since his numbers are fine people haven't complained.
  11. Okay Bill Clinton. I don't care that Lee had a nice weekend either, the stats suck at multiple positions including catcher, and they've had a worthless 7th reliever all year. RIGHT NOW they aren't playing a game, so it doesn't matter who they have at what position.
  12. I agree with everything you say, except I think we can take catcher out of the piss poor production category. Soto in May has an OPS near .800 and they only reason thats so low is hes not hitting for power. Everything else in his stat line in May is pretty damn good, and Id be ecstatic if his average and OBP are where they are for the month of May in his final stat line. .298 .382 .404 .786 so far in the exact same amount of at bats as April. Damn that slugging is piss poor though The catcher production sucks for the year, and that is the point. It sucked for the first 47 at bats and has been above average for the 2nd 47 at bats. Your statement that they are getting piss poor production from catcher right now is wrong. Right now they arent getting piss poor production from catcher. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?sort=OPS&split=78&group=8&season=2009&seasonType=2&statType=batting&type=reg The Cubs have a 674 OPS out of the catchers spot this year, 15th out of 16 NL teams. Sorry, I'm not wrong. They have a worthless 7th reliever, no 3rd baseman and are getting piss poor production from 2b, 1b and catcher.
  13. I agree with everything you say, except I think we can take catcher out of the piss poor production category. 14. A league can conspire to help a good team win, but no matter what level of conspiring you do, there was no making the 96-07 Blackhawks any better.
  15. MLB has put a limit to the number of bench personel that teams have have around, I think in response to all the "dieticians, nutritionists and strength coaches" that were around earlier this decade.
  16. It's the norm to keep 12, but that doesn't make it right, just like countless other bits of conventional wisdom in baseball. The Cubs have routinely kept 12 guys without using that 7th reliever much, if at all. Juan Cruz was once the guy who sat for weeks at a time. If you have a solid 1-8 lineup with few, if any holes, and little need for offense off your bench, then great. But right now this team doesn't have a 3rd baseman and they are getting piss poor production from 1B, 2B and C. They could use a potentially potent bench bat much more than they could use an ineffecitive arm in the bullpen.
  17. I take it those live chats are dead for home games.
  18. and who would that be? There are plenty of incredibly over weight, no athletic ability other than a strong arm pitchers. I remember as a kid being amazed Rod Beck was somehow a big league pitcher. Alfonseca, David Wells and David Weathers all immediately jump into my mind as well. There's a difference between having a body type that doesn't scream "elite pitcher" and actually throwing like a girl. There's no way he threw that fast. I'm sure that's just a myth that got passed down.
  19. The funny thing I didn't think about was that Harrison has already been to the White House when the Steelers won 3 years ago! Seriously, a black man goes to the Bush White House, but not the Obama White House? he didn't go the last time either. I read the CBS sportsline headline that says "Harrison passes on another trip to White House". I took it as he passed on going again, rather than he again passed on going. Maybe Harrison is just a closeted Tea party afficionado. These guys hate paying taxes.
  20. What happened to his wrist?
  21. Hitler was resilient. He wasn't particularly focused though, and while he pretty much rolled through the regular season, he pretty choked big time when the bright lights started to shine.
  22. I still find it amazing that he actually got his fastball up to 86 MPH for that movie. That's pretty bad for a pitching prospect, but pretty good for an actor. Is this some sort of joke that I'm missing? Because I don't see how it is at all possible that Robbins threw a ball over 60, let alone 86mph.
  23. That's if Hoff reaches safely. If not, then he pinch hits and then we burn Miles to replace him in the field. I'm not necessarily against it, but I don't think it was an awful non-move either. What?
  24. So then the question is how does he ever get past the 146 innings or so? Sooner or later you have to let him just pitch, especially considering how effective hes been as a starter. I think they definately need to keep an eye on his pitch counts and such, but we arent talking about some 21 year old top prospect just coming up. Marshall will be 27 this season, and eventually he needs to be left alone and just left to pitch. Yeah, they need to stretch him into the 160-180 range soon anyway. It's nice to be able to limit his innings, but I don't think you save his arm by having him go from throwing 6 innings every 5 days to having him rack up outings against one batter at a time.
