  1. I always like getting my utility guys from within the system. A, it saves money from paying a Macias clone $1m, B, it keeps the Iowa shuttle an option for sticky roster situations.
  2. I don't see the need to assume that would be it for the offseason, but it's not like Hendry has been brilliant in the offseason anyway. His best attribute is probably in the trading game. Giving him money to burn doesn't really guarantee anything.
  3. Well if you count on Peavy giving you an extra inning per game than Marshall that gives you one less inning from the dregs of the pen. I would think that combined with Peavy's greater run prevention over the (let's say hypothetically) 6 innings that Marshall would've pitched, then yes, I think it's greater than the 1 or 2 ABs or 1 or 2 innings per game difference. (This is all assuming Marshall is part of a hypothetical Peavy trade) You also have to consider how willing they appear to be to shove Marshall into the bullpen, and the whole 140 inning plateau.
  4. I want my bench players to do something really well. I don't care if Fox can't play the field. Give him 1 AB a game as your primary RH pinch hitter. They've got the whole "flexibility" thing under control with guys like Freel, Scales, Reed and Hoff. They have absolutely no use for 7 relievers right now. They've gotten 10 innings this month out of Ascanio, Patton and Cotts. They are fairly worthless. If it doesn't work out, so be it. But they need some sort of threat on the bench besides Reed Johnson. They aren't running starting pitchers out there who are getting knocked out in the 4th inning, like Marquis did all too frequently. Guzman, Gregg, Heilman, Marmol and Wells/Marshall can handle the bulk of the bullpen duty. Get Fox up here and see if you can get something out of his bat.
  5. I'm betting mid-August, and he'll be an average hitter.
  6. Back to normal baseball?
  7. There is another team in the city he could play for. Why? So the Cubs could still blow games with this bullpen and no bench? The difference between Marshall and Peavy isn't worth the upgrades needed to improve the bullpen and bench (now regulars since they can't stay healthy). Even though the farm is improving, they don't have enough to improve every sector of the team. You either have to improve the run scoring or the run preventing. If they think they can count on Peavy for a bunch of low scoring 7 inning games, bridging the gap over the horrible 5/6 inning relievers, and they don't see an opportunity to improve at the need positions of 3B/2B, they might feel the need to do so. They've spent a ton of money on the outfield in recent years. They've spent on keeping the corner guys.
  8. Roberts just signed an extension 3 months ago. He isn't going anywhere. And the Orioles aren't going to use money on pitching. They are following the MacPhail strategy he had with the Cubs to buy bats and build from within through pitching prospects. They don't want to rush any of their prized prospects which is why they have so many stopgaps in the rotation/bullpen this year. I don't know if the MacPhail strategy is to not spend money on pitching. Yes, he was all about drafting pitchers and acquiring major league bats, but they spent a good deal of money on pitching, and did acquire major league pitching. The Clement/Alfonseca trade, Lieber and Valdez acquisitions, Tapani signing and multiple relievers pick-ups, not to mention the money they started to allocate to big ticket "organizational" guys like Wood and Prior and the near signing of Hampton when it was either him or Sosa suggests he is flexible in going away from that spend on hitting draft/develop pitching philosophy.
  9. I don't know why that would factor much, most managers have thrown pitchers under the bus throughout their careers at some point. I don't think Guillen overworks pitchers and they have a very good pitching coach with Cooper. Well, he's a jackass and pyschotic, and insists that Ozzieball won them the World Series while ignoring all the HR and incredible starting pitcher performances that really drove that season. If you had your choice, I'm sure lots of guys would prefer to play for somebody else. Plus, he might not want to be called a [expletive].
  10. I like that there is a report he is hesitant to pitch for Guillen. I'd have to imagine Ozzie is a negative factor for many players considering playing there.
  11. Well, the White Sox are a team whose ownership is stable and has shown a willingness to spend. They may be no better this year (although they probably actually will be), but over the course of his contract he could probably see more significant success with the White Sox than SD.
  12. Huh? Everything I read said Hendry just didn't want to pay as much as was on the table. I was under the impression the deal couldn't go through primarily because the Trib wouldn't take on that kind of contract in the middle of the sale. The secondary factor was Towers continuing to add extra players to the deal at the last minute (I think the breaking point might have been Angel Guzman). I thought there was a deal on the table that Hendry didn't want to take, and then shortly after that the trib instructed them to put any sort of deal on the backburner due to the ownership issues.
  13. Huh? Everything I read said Hendry just didn't want to pay as much as was on the table.
  14. Okay, well there is a very big difference between what you are saying here and what you said in the previous post. They wouldn't have to pay him more money to cut him or pay X+Y as you said. They would take a bigger cap hit. I do remember something happened a few years ago where they changed how the June 1 thing worked with caps. The Bears were in pretty good cap situation before this offseason started. They actually saved more cap money by going from Orton to Cutler, and without any first round picks to pay, that's even better. They have signed a few guys who will take a good chunk away, but I'm pretty sure they have the space to bump Vasher if that's what they want to do.
  15. I'm pretty sure we'd actually lose money by cutting Vasher at this point in his contract, so I have a really hard time believing he'd have to fight for his spot. If you at least broke even I could see him having to compete but when the choice is pay $X to have him on the roster or $X+Y to cut him, I think he stays. How would that work? They would likely lose more cap space this year, as they would have to take the bonus hit all at once instead of over the life of the contract, but I don't see how they would have to actually pay him more to cut him. One of the articles this morning said Tinoisamoa was seen talking to Hillenmeyer, which is funny when you think Hunter would almost certainly be cut if they sign this guy.
  16. I don't think the weather plays a factor at all in football. You don't need sunny skies to practice football. There's a lot of reasons why certain schools dominate, but it's not like USC has always been at the top, or those souther Big 12 schools. Northern schools have been quite successful in football.

  18. The most anyone can do is recognize a pattern and do something different the next time. Well what's the [expletive] pattern??? Tell me what the [expletive] is this mystical [expletive] that each of the past 10 world series winners have had in common?? They all scored more runs than the opposition in the majority of their postseason games, and weren't the Cubs.
  19. This is just a few years after she reportedly almost died in child birth, right? I'm just wondering who will be the first blogger to joke about Phil being the one with breast cancer.
  20. With Jesus Singletary as the head coach? I highly doubt it. If Jesus Dungy can forgive the kid, I'm sure Singletary can hop on that bandwagon.
  21. Wasn't that just in response to a rather pointless jab at American sports? It wasn't a jab, it was an observation. What makes sense about elevating a minuscule sample size and making it out to be more important than the larger sample size? I don't see how playoffs/tournaments determining a champion is uniquely American.
  22. As opposed to the consensus on most of those other guys that they will end up playing out their days in the indepenent leagues? The real question is if that team stepped on the field in 2012, how many games would they lose? I'm guessing 147.
  23. It would be better if he went to Cincy or another division opponent and played against the dawg pound once a year.
  24. I don't think there was any question about whether he sold high on DeRosa. He obviously did, given his age and numbers. The question is whether the "high value" was matched with a high return.
  25. I'd definitely prefer they limit him by letting him skip starts as opposed to loogy duty. I can't see them using him exclusively as a loogy but more of a full innging with key LH due up. That still doesn't help much in terms of stretching him out to eventually throwing 180+ innings in a season.
