  1. There's the possibility that a cash strapped Pirates team didn't want to keep paying his $2m salary. Also, that he lost a game of chicken with other GMs that wanted to wait to make their best offers. Or, that he is a poor judge of value and that while others may have offered more, he perceived this deal to be best. This isn't as simple as selling an asset for dollars, where it is very clear that $50 equals $50. Everybody evaluates the value of these assets differently. If he's got a hard-on for a player that became available from Atlanta, his bias for that player could easiliy skew his perception of the value of the deal.
  2. I don't get how people come to this conclusion. He said that when he was drafted and signed the big deal. But he made it quite clear this spring that his goal was to be pitching in the majors. And with the Cubs he's got very little chance to be pitching in the majors anytime soon. Anyway, I would put Randy Wells value considerably higher than Jake Fox's. Randy Wells could be a decent starting pitcher. Fox can't play in the field. They've been trying to deal Fox for a while and apparantly can't. It would seem that Fox would be nothing more than a throw-in at this point. Colvin has very little upside. I could see a team wanting to plug in a guy soon who might produce "safe" numbers having interest in him. Or maybe a team in need of OF depth. But I don't see any team trading for him with expectations or even hope of him becoming a really good corner OF or anything.
  3. Interesting contradiction. How do you figure? They had a great chance to add talent to the system by taking advantage of McLouth's inflated reputation coming off last year, and they squandered it by not getting a very good deal, especially considering it's only June 4th. The contradiction is, the conclusion proves the premise faulty (McLouth's reputation far exceeds his actual value right now). McLouth's reputation/trade value is clearly reflected in the return the Pirates received here, thus disproving the "inflated reputation" theory. I don't know that his value is clearly reflected in the return the Pirates received here. My guess is it is, but it's quite possible they settled for less than what they could have gotten in another deal, especially if they waited until the deadline.
  4. That's a silly reason to not like it. What don't you get? The Pirates season was thrown away the minute it started. Seriously they weren't going to do anything. And McClouth wasn't the guy who was going to determine if they ever returned to contender status. You don't see how it's frustrating to be a fan of a team that hasn't finished above 500 in 16 years giving up on a season 1/3 of the way in while 4 games under? This isn't the pre-'03 Trib Cubs hoping to be competitive within the division frustration. This is a Pirates franchise that hasn't given fans a reason to care for the last 16 years, telling the fans that they don't care, and aren't going to try for ANOTHER season. That and the package they received was really [expletive]. He didn't say he was frustrated, he said he didn't get it. He also said he wouldn't like it even if these guys had HOF careers because it's throwing away this season. Like it or not, this season was already thrown away. I don't understand how you can not "get it". It's simple. The team sucks and they are still years away from contending. If you are going to argue about the value they got for the guy, go right ahead. I get that.

  6. I often don't agree with many of your ideas, but this one I'd be all over like white on rice. I've always liked Atkins. Avoiding carbs? Or just a big fan of bacon?
  7. So does the game of baseball in general. I really don't see the point in flipping out over someone using a corked bat when most players are doing every little thing they can to gain an advantage. It's part of baseball. Keeping someone out of the hall for that would be like keeping out one of the best pitchers of an era because he got caught once with sandpaper. Like I said, he got caught for the bat and was suspended. That shouldn't keep him out. Like it or not, nothing and nobody has come even remotely close to busting him when it comes to steroids. That doesn't mean he didn't use them, but for now he should be judged based on his performance. The corked bat should have negligable impact in that regard since use of them over his career would have been detrimental to his numbers. I just meant that the cork incident is relevant in the speculation of him using drugs because it shows that he has cheated before I really hope George Brett gets kicked out of the hall of fame. Not to mention Joe Morgan, who openly admitted to using a corked bat.
  8. What is the current makeup of the Braves hierarchy, and how does it compare to the one that actually led them to and through greatness? We're going on 4 years of mediocrity with that organization, a bit more of a fall from grace than what Cleveland went through after their much less ballyhooed period of success. Not that this has anything to do with Glavine, but I'm not sure we should just assume Atlanta is making all the right moves anymore.
  9. why wouldn't he? It's not unheard of for players to miss the first game after being traded to a new team.
  10. Oooooh, a battle of life's annoyances, twitter vs larussa, nobody wins, or everybody does.
  11. Interesting contradiction. How do you figure? They had a great chance to add talent to the system by taking advantage of McLouth's inflated reputation coming off last year, and they squandered it by not getting a very good deal, especially considering it's only June 4th. Or maybe his reputation isn't as good as some people think?
  12. The day Plaxico shot himself I was hoping for the Giants to cut him and the Bears to pick him up. I understand it is anything but a no-brainer, but even if he has to be suspended for 4 games, I would love to see them pick him up. His ability to go up and get it along with Cutler's ability to put it where he wants it just intrigues the hell out of me. Plax has spent his entire career in outdoor cold weather climates, he is going to be able to perform in Chicago in December, and hopefully January.
  13. The Bears are 30/1? Are you sure? Is that stale info? Chicago always gets a decent amount of money placed on them, and after the Cutler signing I'd think they fall more into the 12-15/1 range.
  14. Yeah, makes no sense, especially since the Bears have done pretty well vs. GB in Lovie's tenure. If anything, he could say he was brought in to beat Minnesota, who is a better team than GB and has a defense that is almost impossible to run on. But I'm pretty sure the Bears brought in Cutler with the hopes of him helping them beat whoever represents the AFC in the Superbowl. In the quotes provided, Dungy doesn't even mention Green Bay. He just says "one team" and the writer apparantly assumes it's Green Bay. It would make more sense as Minnesota, but it's still a rather ridiculous sentiment. He was brought in to be the quarterback for 19 games this year and the next 10 years after.
  15. Eh, it's not that hard. People rave about Lee but he doesn't seem to to anything impressive defensively. I doubt very much the numbers people have shown for defensive ability at 1st.
  16. Historically Bradley has about 2 years of great production and Dunn was always the clear winner on the "likelihood to keep being productive" scale. You don't really want to talk "historically" if you are trying to pimp Bradley over Dunn. It was all about hoping 2007/2008 were real and he was capable of maintaining those numbers. Bradley had the upside hopes, Dunn had the better track record.
  17. As dumb as it is to suggest a player was brought in to beat one team, why is anybody suggesting it's GB? It's not the like Bears haven't been able to beat them under Lovie. And Dungy doesn't even saying GB. I think this is a case of a guy who really has no business talking on TV just saying stuff to make a stand because that's what TV guys have to do. Nothing he said was the least bit meaningful.
  18. I think the volume of injuries across the roster is a surprise. I think I posted I was concerned about injuries before the season began, but I didn't expect this much. I'm sorry, but that's just ridiculous. Harden was a lock to get injured and miss significant time, same with Bradley. And Ramirez was always one misstep away from getting injured. You can't say Aramis missing time was some sort of unforeseen shock. He was always going to miss time, the question was how much. Lee breaking his wrist was a crazy flukey thing that couldn't be accounted for. Aramis reinjuring a shoulder with the same injury he had earlier in his career is not the least bit surprising. It sucks yes, but it's not shocking. This is what happens when you have an old team, like the Cubs, and no young everyday players capable of picking up the slack and carrying a team. The numbers of 30+ year old players and guys with significant injury histories is troublesome. You can't push off the struggles on surprise.
  19. That is just all kinds of nonsense. Soriano was never a superstar. His is producing right now at 33, at just about the same rate he produced at 28 for Texas. He is well outside his peak age range, and nothing he has done can be considered surprising. Everybody with a brain knew the contract was bad. Everybody knew his best years would be in the beginning, and that it could get ugly. I don't believe he scratched the surface of how ugly he can get down the road. Furthermore what he's done this year is one good month and one bad. And he's had plenty of bad months in his career. Nothing that has happened can be considered shocking. Soto didn't have spring training, got fat, and now he stinks. That happens. The closest "surprise" is Bradley struggling, but that can't be considered entirely flukey, given his age and injury history, plus the lack of a longterm track record of significant success. High payroll teams have to be built to withstand setbacks, the Cubs didn't really suffer any last year, but now they are going through what teams go through all the time, and looking really weak in the process.
  20. I thought he looked significantly larger the first time I saw him this year, and that was before I became disappointed with his performance. Perhaps it's just perception, but he really looks fat. He's not Prince Fielder fat but I'd say he looks 15 lbs heavier than last year. No, not Prince fat, but definitely must be hard to squat on those knees for 9 innings 5 times a week fat.
  21. I thought he looked significantly larger the first time I saw him this year, and that was before I became disappointed with his performance. Perhaps it's just perception, but he really looks fat.
  22. DeRosa isn't an everyday RF'er. He would certainly be more 'everyday' than Bradley, who is injured every other day. DeRosa/Hoff platoon could be decent.
  23. From the trib's "huddle up" blog. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/huddleup/ota/ He talks about a couple nice passes to Hester and Olsen and Cutler's footwork. Nothing really meaningful, but more fun to think about than the Cubs.
  24. What's with this off topic nonsense? I thought the thread was about getting a third baseman.
  25. He is a good hitter...for a pitcher. He is an ok guy to use as a PH in like the 4th or 5th inning of a game. Pinch hitters need to do something well. Zambrano makes a ton of outs, but his isolated power is fairly significant, and since entering his prime as a hitter he's got a significant SLG. I think all the talk of putting him in the lineup every game is just joking around, but he is a good hitting pitcher and could be considered a decent pinch hitting option as well.
