  1. Right. Weis showed you can still bring the talent into ND. It's just a matter of finding the coach who can both bring in the talent and develop it. It's not just coaching. And talent isn't just about getting a top flight QB and a wideout or two. Talent is about getting 1st round draft type talent everywhere; on the defensive line, linebackers, defensive backs, offensive line, etc, and a truck load of depth. I think it's possible for ND to contend for a title, because it's possible for just about anybody. But I do not think they can legitimately contend every year as Andy suggests. The Floridas of the world have too much of an advantage.
  2. Parity is a big deal, and encompasses many things. ND's television contract with the worst network sports department is antiquated. Every kid can be promised loads of exposure going to all kinds of schools. Back then ND was a legitimate power, but nearly two decades of mediocrity has left them an afterthought to many. They still get exposure for the same reason people still talk about Mickey Mantle, because it's what the baby boomers grew up on and know and the baby boomers still make decisions. But ND just doesn't resonate to the young football playing public like it did back then.
  3. And Oklahoma was garbage for a while before Stoops got there. Miami and Florida were both pretty nondescript for a while there - hell, Miami still kind of is, though they appear on the way back up. It's not hard to figure out the common denominator. The ability to get any athlete they want.
  4. Because Dunn is only owed $12m this season, whereas bringing back Holliday would require more money per year and many more years.
  5. The BCS bowls seem anti-climactic and dull to me.
  6. You asked what's so different between the two, and I pointed it out. Juan Cruz has nothing to do with the difference between Guillen, a bad hitter most of his career coming off a bad year, and Burrell, a very good hitter most of his career coming off a bad year.
  7. So Meche would be the newer version of Marquis, leaving the Cubs a miraculous lightning in the bottle acquisition of Edmonds and midseason Rich Harden trade away from repeating 2008, I guess?
  8. How is Guillen that much different than Burrell? Pat Burrell has been a damn good hitter for most of his career with a couple bad seasons, Guillen has been a horrible hitter most of his career witha couple good seasons. And what either of them are any more is a platoon power outfielder who are aging quickly. Burrell has a better hitting pedigree, but Guillen is not a comically bad defender. In a perfect world I prefer Burrell, but if it means the difference in adding someone like Cruz as well as Guillen, I take that over Burrell every time. Guillen is a little older and apparently aging faster, and not a good defender either. He's coming off 3 of 4 really weak seasons, whereas Burrell has been a beast in 3 of 4 seasons. Aside from a bad 2009, there really isn't much of a comparison.
  9. How is Guillen that much different than Burrell? Pat Burrell has been a damn good hitter for most of his career with a couple bad seasons, Guillen has been a horrible hitter most of his career witha couple good seasons.
  10. Yeah, I've heard his name as the centerpiece for virtually every potential trade involving an actual superstar this decade. Cano was on that list for a short time, but when he actually built on early success that ended quickly. For all of their veteran star acquisitory ways, I can't think of a Hanley Ramirez type "one that got away" player the Yankees have had to part with. Eric Milton and Nick Johnson are the closest things to a traded away star.
  11. I really don't like Melky. He made a splash in his first full season, but started to decline to the point of really sucking in year 3. He had a bounceback year, but still doesn't impress me even though he's only 25 and should get better. I feel like he's a short chubby barely passable CF who stands no chance of sticking there longterm and would be a worthless corner outfielder. He's hidden nicely on a team loaded with hall of famers, and I feel like the whole Yankee pedigree is always going to make him more expensive than he's worth. I feel like Colvin could come up soon and do what Melky has done in the majors.
  12. There's always the challenge of being able to win at the very highest level. Lots of coaches are egomaniacs that can't resist the temptation. Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban for example. What does Urban Myer have to prove at Florida? That he can win without the son of God.
  13. I had sprint and never had any problem in Wrigley. I "watched" a couple NFL drafts there, and have always used it to check scores and the occasional weather front causing a rain delay.
  14. [expletive] coward if there is such a thing as playing not to lose, Lovie personifies it, and he's not very good at it.
  15. are the bears out of timeouts or this is more cowardly lovie not even thinking about trying to drive for a score before halftime? 2 minutes to go, 2nd down, that is a no brainer time out territory for the defense.
  16. the igloo is a really crappy arena
  17. Not when your best receiver is kept in to block. That's multiple red zone pass plays were Olsen has not bee in the route. Is it hard for anybody to understand how poorly coached this team is? Not enough men on the field for a punt, ridiculously unnecessary failed fake kick, more tackles going offside (and the Bears also got away with an illegal snap, since the entire line moved before Kreutz snapped it earlier). They can win this game due to the Rams incompetence and Cutler's talent, but these coaches are pathetic.
  18. He can say they are better, and I wouldn't argue. The problem is his idiotic defense. He said "all phases" then cited centers, goalies and a push on defense. He didn't mention wings, where the Blackhawks arguably are better, and it just doesn't add up that they are better at goal and a push on defense. What is more accurate is probably that they are better in goal and the Hawks are better on defense.
  19. And I'm going to be there. Hradek said Pittsburgh is better in all phases, citing centers, goalie and a push on defense. No mention of wingers. And I'm not sure how they can be considered better in goal and a push on defense when they've allowed 19 more goals in 3 more games.
  20. I had no idea Philly was strugglng. It seems every year they are poised to be one of the better teams and then disappoint.
  21. kicking a man when he's down? hahaha Much better than hitting him in the face with a golf club when he's down.
  22. It does have a little "methinks he doth protest too much" feel to it. When something like this goes down wives are going to give their husband's crap, and they have little choice but to bad mouth him. I feel like he's being honest and is upset though. He could easily see her as sort of a daughter.
  23. Not gonna lie, I care about none of that right now. Seriously, that is a ridiculous list.
  24. You also traded away a guy in Fox who can be useful doing things this team actually need, scoring runs, as opposed to another mediocre arm doing things this team doesn't have that much trouble with. And Miles wasn't brought here to give 170 PAs, part of the problem of having him on the roster was the complete lack of replacement when Ramirez went down. There's an opportunity cost there that is more than just what Miles did. Gray is a 28 year old who wasn't a particularly good minor leaguer and hasn't been a particularly good major leaguer. He's the quintessential dime a dozen bullpen arm.
