Not a bad idea, but the guy is coming off back to back abysmal seasons. That would have to be a minor league deal. -
I think it's ludicrous to discount the value of taking the job that is offerend instead of waiting to see if somebody else makes an offer. It's asinine to suggest people view Oakland as more stable than Chicago (their head coach was almost arrested this season and almost fired last week). The Bears may be making a mistake by taking their time, but the Bears are taking their time and guys are taking jobs that are offered to them intead of waiting on the Bears. That's not sugarcoating, it's the only rational explanation. From a PR standpoint, the Bears look bad. They are letting other people frame the story instead of finding their guy and signing him. But in the long run the PR story and media's take is meaningless.

The better Ivy teams do pay some for head coaches. How much was he making in Ole Miss? If he thought this was the best way to get a head coaching gig, it makes sense. Looks good on the resume to have some HC experience. Cornell's head coach left to take the Duke DC position.

Yeah, that goes against everything I've ever heard. That said, I agree that Hendry almost certainly ran extensive checks on his health, so I'd think he's recovered or is on pace to be recovered. Or there was a reason why Hendry moved away from guys like Dye or Gomes. Considering the Cubs extensive history of players with TJS on their resume, I would think they'd be comfortable determining a guy's status.

You've never seen that it's different for hitters? Seriously? They always say that. Pitchers can throw again earlier, they just aren't 100%. But it takes a hell of a lot more precise elbow ability to pitch than to go back to being a position player.

Not bad. I was hoping $3 or less. Essentially Reed Johnson's money, and if others falter and he has to play 100 games it's a little more. Ideally he doesn't have to play too much.

It's not love, it's interest. And he doesn't get to demand anything. If he signed as the 4th OF he would be a good option. If not, no loss. I'm not sure what the market's like. It's probably not good, but the last i heard he wanted to start. I'd rather have Nady who is ready to sign and accept a 4th OFs role right now than a 36 year old with major defensive issues who has declined and can't hit outside well that summer bandbox on the south side. I prefer Nady as well. But that doens't mean Dye wasn't an intriguing option for a needed position.

Thinking twice, maybe. But that cannot have weighed an ounce in this decision if the guy went to Oakland. Say whatever you want about the Bears, they are not nearly the mess the Raiders are. Chicago is way above the dregs of the league. Lovie is no more unsettled than most coaches who didn't make the playoffs this year, even if his situation is more public this offseason.

If all 8 is guaranteed, it's more than I would have done. 4-5 with incentives to 8 sounds about right. Incentives would have to go well past 8 for a pitcher of Sheets' caliber at that small a base. -
That's doubtful. Kosuke would run circles around him with the glove, and at best he might be a modest upgrade with the bat. No doubt on D. But if Fuku slumps, Nady will play. You don't play RF in the majors cause of your D. Nady can hit. Also plays a solid 1B. He doesn't hit much better, if at all, than Fukudome.

Because Oakland was the only one with a contract offer. good point, but still.... But still what? Oakland offered him a job, and the Bears offered him a chance to interview. If he felt he was not the favorite in Chicago, it was a no brainer to take the Oakland job. The first to interview is often the first to offer and first to sign a guy. Head coach candidates with existing jobs will often pass up ugly situations, but position coaches and coordinators will take what they can get if the money is there.

Well that would just be awful. I'm not sure I agree though, primarily because I think this version of Jermaine Dye is a worse hitter than Kosuke is, and I think Lou's intelligent enough to see what an oaf he is in the field. I don't see anyway that Dye starts and Kosuke goes to the bench. If it's a straight up platoon Kosuke is going to get the vast majority, and I'm not even sure they'd start Dye against all LHP.
