Brown's an interesting candidate, but I'm definitely LOLing at pretending like Quenton Nelson was a savvy pick. He was the best O-line prospect in like a decade. Taking him when they did was a smart move. It's not like he was the consensus #1 overall pick. He was rumored to the Bears a couple spots later. They could have traded out of the spot. Teams often shy away from guards that early, but they did it. They deserve credit for making the right decision.

I think, at least early on, George didn't have much of an opinion, or at least conviction in his opinion. He clearly relied heavily on Phillips after coming out of the ticket sales department. He basically said Ted makes the decisions back when he became chairman and his job was to help Ted make those decisions. Maybe he feels more confident in himself making the decisions now.

I agree on Pace. I think he'll get a role as like an AGM or Scouting Director or something like that, and probably be pretty successful. Nagy though? I think he's gonna have to drop down to college, and not a good one. Most failed head coaches were highly thought of coordinators, and can just slide back into that role. But after the last 2-3 years, who in their right mind would give Nagy an OC job? Andy Reid.

I don't know anything about him but he seems like he'd be a quality candidate this offseason. -
all they had to do was show progress on offense. Not necessarily win a bunch of games, just score points. And they failed miserably.

I don't think Pace would go down a few rungs for long at least. He'd be a player personnel director pretty quickly I think. And if his contract is up therein lies the rub. But who is pimping Pace as their next GM within the next couple years? Looks at Jeff Ireland's career arc. He went from scout to Dolphins GM from 2008 to 2013. He was a consultant with Seattle the next year then went to work in New Orleans in 2015 and now, 7 years later, his name is back in discussion for GM jobs. Not all consultants are 60 year olds on the way out. These guys come and go and take different paths. Some go into media. But it usually takes a while to get back on the top of the food chain. A consultant role keeps the guy in the loop, but demands much less time than being a personnel director somewhere. And nobody in the NFL is rushing to emulate what the Bears have done. Angelo was out of football at 60 following his Bears stint and Emery went back to scouting work. Pace probably still has a brighter future, but I don't see a fast track back for him.

I really don't get what a Pace promotion looks like, the guy has strengths but they are not in figuring out the best people to hire and strategic planning. But with all the smoke about staying with the team, it seems like something is up. What is preventing them from keeping Pace in a consulting capacity? Teams hire former coaches and executives in a consulting capacity, like Brad Childress and the guy from Texas this year. If they are going with an internal promotion at GM, they might want to use Pace as a sounding board throughout the GM's first year. Pace is in his mid-40s and has some accolades under his belt, but if he's fired tomorrow he probably has to go down a few rungs in his next gig and work his way back up. He might be happy to lessen the workload, spend more time with the young family and keep his name in the ring for a new gig in a couple years. Then they can hire Pederson as head coach and demote Nagy to QB coach and keep everybody employed.

Does the Mike Glennon / trading up for Trubisky over Mahomes/Watson count as one more or two? I don't care how many moves it counts as, it's pretty silly to the degree fans parse out individual moves instead of the big picture. But fwiw if I magically became an NFL owner I'd definitely want my GM to feel secure they won't be fired for trying to find a QB and failing. The idea that GMs should get one swing at a QB and that basically seals their fate is one of the most utterly brain dead sports takes in existence. That was two swings, Foles was a dropped foul tip and Dalton was the strikeout.

It's not that there will be no more ARod, there will be an ARod/Michael Kay telecast that is supposed to be like the Manning cast, but completely misses the point of the Manningcast. One longtime announcer and a robot who has been in the booth for a few years is not the same thing as two goofy brothers talking about the game with a cast of characters.

People don't go to a baseball game because it might lead their team to the world series, they go to a baseball game to see a baseball game. Adding new layers of "meaning" to them isn't going to do a damn thing. -

Theory: Nagy knows that the McCaskeys hate to be scooped as evidenced when he was supposed to be fired before thanksgiving and then stayed on, so he leaked this report in hopes that the McCaskeys will say 'dammit we cant be scooped, now we have to keep Nagy" cool theory

I would not be shocked at all if the season gets pushed back. There is a lock out, the fact that it has gotten this far means that is a very real possibility. -
acknowledging all the downside, I really wouldn't mind it, and think he could put together a quality staff given his ties to both college and NFL teams. The league has already run through all of the hot young prospects.

I didn't realize he has that much left on his contract. But how often are worthwhile trades made? What could you get for him, a 3rd and a average DE? Why not just keep him at least through 2022 and worry about filling the other talentless positions rather then creating another hole? Just my humble opinion, but it's a bad look for a one of the new FO's first moves to trade their best pass rusher, a franchise-record pass rusher. I'd be shocked and dismayed. Shocked and dismayed I say! Seriously though, if they did I'd want to know their plan to put pressure on QBs. I feel like there's not a good answer. Presumably, the plan would be to support the offense as much as possible, without too much concern over wins and losses early in the new regime's run. They probably wouldn't mind losing a ton in 2022, if they get Fields right and score points. Then you fix your defense with the 2023 draft.
