  1. I don't see the need to announce a decision until it is time to announce a decision.
  2. The bottom line is this is Hendry's 8th year running the program and it hasn't come close to winning as often as they should. Every year there is some nonsensical excuse about this guy or that guy not living up to expectations or out of nowhere injuries crippling an otherwise brilliant roster. Every team deals with players who fail and/or get hurt. The good ones get past that. Hendry has had plenty of resources to build a team that could withstand setbacks, but he's failed miserably at his job.
  3. After his .894 OPS in 2007, he has kind of fallen off a cliff (.784, .686, .715 since) but he's only 25 (26 in August) and was an elite prospect (#2 in baseball in 2004). His past two BABIPs have been a bit lower than his career average as well (.334 career; .310 in 2009 and .290 this year). Defensively, he's very good according to UZR/150: 10.7 in LF and 5.5 in CF. He just lost an arbitration hearing before the year and is making $3 million this year. I'll admit it's more the elite prospect status that intrigues me about him, but I can definitely see the reasons we wouldn't have interest in him. My thinking is, if we can't get one or more current top prospect(s) for Lilly, I'd take Upton before a package of lower minors/upside guys. Yeah, I'd rather take a gamble on him than more depth type prospects.
  4. BJ Upton kind of sucks, doesn't he? Or at least he's really fallen off a cliff after a hot start to his career. Plus, he's got to be close to making big money. What exactly is his position? CF? Is he a really good one? Unless you're dealing Fukudome immediately and then platooning Byrd and Colvin in RF, I'm not sure I see much value in going after Upton. He doesn't make them better short-term and his price is just going to go up and up.
  5. Yes but you'd also have become a huge tool. Good thing that never happened.
  6. Money. so be it, but this club will always be at a huge disadvantage playing at Wrigley Field and its day games compared to every other team in the game. So was the 2008 team actually a 103 win club that wilted in the heat?
  7. I'm thinking about adopting the Bulls as my team. It's either the Bulls or the Thunder. The Thunder are incredibly easy to like on almost every level. The fact that they don't have any history in their current city makes it easy for a bandwagon jumper also. I'm stuck with the Pistons in the regular season but like to watch the Thunder if they're on national tv and of course they're my go-to in the playoffs. Like the Baltimore Ravens?
  8. Z killed Z's trade value, both with his production and with his behavior. All the Cubs have done is (re)establish that acting like an arse is unacceptable. That "life lesson" may be lost on Z, but it needed to be reaffirmed to everyone else in the organization. Otherwise you've soon got the inmates running the asylum. just look how much things have turned around since they put the hammer down Turning things around wasn't the objective. so we taught the organization an important life lesson that in no way improved play on the field. hurray? It's people like you, obsessed with just wins and losses, that really ruin sports for the rest of us.
  9. Unless you're getting a star out there, couldn't Fontenot + some guy fill the 2B hole in the short-term?
  10. They would get hammered if they came in, lost a ton of games in their first year, knocked $20-30m off payroll and simply traded salary for marginal prospects.
  11. that's what the cubs need, another broken player as freakish as they may have been, anybody with that many injuries is a huge risk.
  12. Lots of crap gets huge ratings. That doesn't agree with you.
  13. Okay, if the draft is okay because every team has a chance, then what are your feelings on televising the NBA draft lottery? As long as the team with the lowest odds win on occasion, it makes some sense that many people will have interest. But free agency destinations are too easily reported in advance and almost always way too narrow in scope to make this sort of thing work. Everybody knew he was going to the Heat before he went to the heat. It was the novelty and Lebron's unique stature that made this appointment viewing (for idiots).
  14. I hope so. That was awesome. Just stop. Honestly: What was wrong with it? As far as I can tell, people just get all up-in-arms about this sort of thing because they enjoy getting angry at rich celebrities. This is sports. We take things too seriously. Is a free agent announcing his signing on live TV worse than the NFL draft on live TV? Or breathless reports from football minicamps? Or 8 hours of Super Bowl pre-game shows? I hope more FAs do this in the future. It's the next logical step in sports. There's nothing logical about it. The draft was intriguing because every fan of every team had a reason to hope that they could get better. This is a unique and ridiculous situation. Quit pretending to be the only enlightened one who understands what's going on here.
  15. He's 21 with a strong pedigree. Here are his prospect rankings. I will admit they are trending in the wrong direction. He is also injury prone: Prospect Ratings by Baseball America: Pre-2007: Rated #22 Prospect Pre-2008: Rated #20 Prospect Pre-2009: Rated #30 Prospect Pre-2010: Rated #77 Prospect He had a stronger campaign last year and his doubles may turn into homers later. The question is whether he (and another Met prospect) are better than two 2011 sandwich picks. At the risk of being hounded for talking about Vitters again, it seems similar to Vitters. Lots of early promotions without much performance to match. Although he also spent time in lower levels each year, were those rehab assignments, demotions or what? Not an interesting player to me, but Lilly isn't going to net you a stud.
  16. Sure, it seems that way. And my guess is the marketing arm of the team wants to keep him, because a stanley cup winning goalie sells. But there have been lots of players who made a name for themselves in a championship that didn't need to be retained by that team. If Niemi actually played great in the playoffs and/or finals, this could be harder. But the Hawks won because of their skaters, that was clear.

  18. You play in an AL West only league? Going from Safeco to Yankee stadium as a lefty? From the AL West to the AL East? Significant He did great in Philly's small park. Wouldn't a lefty benefit from pitching in NY, or at least not suffer as much from the short RF porch as a righty conceivably would? I thought the whole thing was lefty hitters have an advantage, but that would be negated against LH pitching.
  19. Huet is being waived no matter what. He'll play in Rockford or he'll play in Europe. So if we don't re-sign Niemi, goal is gonna be a huge question mark. If they do sign Niemi goal is a question.
  20. I doubt it. He's one of only a handful of truly huge global icon stars that could get that rating. Mark Teixeira's signing pales in comparison. I don't think you can pull that off with many people.
  21. Oh sure, give up on him, why not just release him?
  22. His radioactivity is fairly tame though, no? He didn't actually do anything other than bringing guns to the clubhouse, no?
  23. Not anymore than being Cleveland hurts.
