    Theriot with a 554 July OPS, oh wait, just went down to 546, bringing the season to 612.

    I'll trade them Lilly, but we should keep Marmol unless presented with an offer we'd be dumb to turn down. Young, inexpensive, talented players like Marmol, Castro, Soto are guys we should be keeping and building around. The position players, sure. But the relievers with crazy command problems and quickly fading inexpensiveness? Go for it.

    Really? That's kind of interesting. I thought I remember him being considered a dark horse QB in his draft, was it 2009? 3+ year starter with improving, but not great, numbers. Decent size. Might be a solid project for Martz to work on.

    I'm not sure many teams are going to want to sign a 39 year old catcher. Koyie just did the station ID thing during the commercial. Great get by the WGN marketing people.

    Plenty of GMs would take a risk on a injury risk player who is currently healthy and tearing the ball apart if he's had a career of tearing the ball apart like Aramis. You don't want to build your team around injury risks, but if you are looking for a bat down the stretch Ramirez is a perfectly good candidate to trade for.

    Given the timing of the sale, I did not think "nothing" was a terrible idea for last offseason. Bringing Hendry back after this year however would be an inexcusable mistake.

    He also had the All Star Break during those 16 games where he got 3 days off. With how hes hitting, and an off day tomorrow, I see no reason he couldnt start today. The season is over. He can rest now and again. But Theriot? The throw he made last night would force Fontenot to the bench for three months.

    He's going to be in the room when decisions are made, but he's not going to be making baseball decisions. The owner has to say the president will be involved, that doesn't mean he will be (other than how it pertains to the business side of things, ie contract details).

    I don't believe that's close to true. I bet you could get Dunn for 3/45 or 4/50. Yeah, Dunn's not going to get a giant contract. Howard's contract is absurd, but he has name recognition and a (vastly overrated) reputation that Dunn doesn't. Homegrown slugging hero on a WS champion plays a big part in that contract.

    I'm sorry, but where are these scores of billionaires running around who have previous experience running a major sports franchise? Guys like Reinsdorff and Cuban are the exceptions. An owner's job is to put the right sports personnel in place because they lack the knowledge to do so themselves. Crane Kenney and Jim Hendry have proved they are not those people yet they still retain full confidence of the owners. Crane Kenney just doesn't matter in this discussion. He doesn't have anything to do with the play on the field. He's a businessman, and as far as I can tell, the business of the Cubs runs just fine.

    I don't think it's all that arbitrary. Things were getting crazier and crazier with these contracts. And the latest one was just off the wall stupid. If you limit the number of years a 35 year old can sign for, you're screwing over 35 year olds. Just limit them to 10 years, that makes it difficult to really fudge the numbers, but allows for some flexibility.

    Freak me out? No, but even a guy as good as Dunn gets a bit iffy as far as production once he hits his mid-30s. I'm just not real comfortable with the idea of paying him $10+ million at 35. He's got the skill set to age well, but I'm still not comfortable with him at 34-35. Of course, a potential 7-year deal to Gonzalez is uncomfortable as well. I think there's the potential for a 5/100-110 deal for Gonzalez, though, and I'm pretty confident he'll be very valuable throughout that contract. That also requires you waiting and hoping he comes to the Cubs. If you let Dunn go for the prettier girl and then she goes to the dance with somebody else, you are spending a lot of lonely nights at home for several years to come.

    Yes, I enjoyed the Cup. I would not get much enjoyment from watching DVDs of the games later on though. It already happened. I know it happened. If a game was on ESPN classic while I was flipping through channels, then I could see watching it for a few minutes, but actually putting it in the DVD player and watching the whole thing wouldn't do much for me. If it's 20 years from now and they haven't won another cup it's only going to start annoying me to see video of when they were good. 85 Bears highlights aren't fun anymore. so if you watch a movie or tv show and really love it, you won't watch it again in the future? I would, but movie/tv is a bad comparison to a sporting event.

    Now that he's playing first base, he's worth a whole lot more. He won't get a mega-deal, but apparently he's looking for a 3-4 year deal worth more annually than his current deal. And eliminating his awful OF defense might just help to get him that. My main concern with Dunn is that he'll be 31 by the start of next season. If we can get him for just 2 years or so, I might not have a problem with that. If the offers get to 3-4 years, I'm not sure I want to give him that. I would put Prince Fielder in that group as well. He's not been more valuable than Dunn this year (2.8 WAR for Fielder, 3.0 WAR for Dunn), but he's nearly 3 years younger. Would 4/44 freak you out?

    Click for depression Hendry lives a charmed life....can a 31 year old man decide to become a Red Sox fan after being a lifelong Cubs fan? It really is amazing. MacPhail hooked him up with an extension like a day before he walked away, then Kenney gave him another one when the future was cloudy. Ricketts is now officially on my [expletive] list.

    If we're talking about acquiring Dunn, my only response is what has taken the Cubs so long? However, I have a strong to very strong suspicion that the Cubs don't value Dunn as much as we do, or they should. I think they have been interested, but with Lee at 1B felt they didn't want to commit to a guy they didn't feel like playing in the OF every year.

    More than he's worth considering the first base FA class likely to be there in 2011. Dunn is still a great player, but is getting up there in age and will want a contract meant for a young stud in his prime. If we sign Dunn to a deal like that this offseason, we'll miss on the better players in the 2011 offseason. Well, a bird in the hand and all that. If he's looking for 7/120, then count me out, but I don't think he's realistically going to get youn stud in his prime money.

    I know everybody likes to claim ownership is cheap and the Cubs always go with no names and people like Phil Rogers and Dave Kaplan probably insist that the next guy has to be a big name with rings, but the Cubs are going on back to back to back big name managers with Baylor, Baker and Piniella. And that didn't help. Hopefully they have the freedom to go after anybody they want.

    I'm not shy about hating the way Marshall's been treated the past 3+ seasons, but I'm inclined to agree. Not so much that I don't think Marshall can still hack it in the rotation, but he's at best slotted behind Jackson and Cashner at first cracks at a rotation that already has 5 guys signed for next season. Yeah, Marshall to rotation is probably a lost cause. I wouldn't want him throwing 150 innings against for a couple years, and then he's 29 and you have to make free agency decisions.
