A lot of special teamers. Should have a couple starting DBs and the a whole lot of role players and backups and projects. One of the OL probably gets cut but most of these guys can probably make this roster.

These late picks have a tremendous opportunity to make the team, since there aren’t many guys on it already.

Yep, some definite self preservation going on it feels like. Should they be treating Fields any other way? He might be “our guy” as fans, but he’s definitely not Poles’ guy. Yes. It’s completely normal NFL conservatism to let the other group’s pick wither on the vine while you build out your roster. But it’s shooting yourself in the foot to purposely tank the offense. Poles will most likely not get a chance to draft a QB as talented as Fields. He will be able to get “his guy”, but in order to do so they’ll need to lose a lot, and the first 12 loss season is going to put an unproven GMs ass in the hot seat. As it looks right now, the offense may be bad enough to lose a ton next year. McCaskey thinks highly of Fields. If they lose next year with a disastrous offense, the bulk of the blame will go to Pace/Nagy/Fields, but that will be a ding against Poles. He had an opportunity to help Fields, but he deliberately and rather obviously punted. George will appreciate the cost savings, but he’s going to notice a lot of the reasons why Fields didn’t stand a chance if things stay the way they look now. Poles will be on a short leash then, and unlike Pace, he won’t get two chances to hire a coach and draft a QB. He’ll have his one shot in 2023 or 2024 and if things don’t look good early, he’ll be gone.

This is a very cynical front office. Basically treating Fields as a free option. If he turns out okay, fine, but he has to do it on his own, they won’t lift a finger to help him. Just fill out the roster the way they like and give them a shot at drafting a QB next year.

I think the biggest takeaway thus far is the cubs aren’t trying to win this year and so far they have succeeded. -

If I didn’t hate the term virtue signaling so much I would label this response as such No actual fan of baseball would be upset if they went to a game that ended in 2.5 hours in real life, unless their team lost. A 2.5 hour game is perfectly normal, and not notably fast. Under 2 hours will feel quick, but to do that you’re watching dynamic pitchers thriving.

Ummm, no, you are just completely wrong. That's not anywhere close to the truth. The Ricketts were anti-Trump republicans until he got the nomination then went full throttle in support of him and fans that were aware and not awful conservatives themselves, hated it, and were vocal about it. This dated all the way back to 2016, and included the shitty decision to make a 2nd white house visit just to see trump even though they did the official visit with Obama.

Yeah, that's revisionist nonsense Not at all. The timing of that contract was such that I never wanted him extended. It expired at a point when it's a bad idea to sign any first baseman to a big contact. I'm sure there are receipts here if you're bored enough to search for them. The only positive I ever saw to extending him was the nostalgia/emotion factor, and, well, I'm a robot. The first extension was clearly team friendly from the beginning, while at the same time making it very unlikely he would sign again with the Cubs. He was the one guy I didn't want back.

yeah, I really don't see the high floor idea. they've got as good of a chance as most non-contenders to be terrible. There's plenty of volatility on this roster

I think it was as simple as convincing them they could make the offense better. All they had to do was score more points. They didn’t have to win 10 games or make the playoffs. They were in a good spot to get a new QB, took the shot on the right guy and had a chance. There’s no reason why competent coaching couldn’t have gotten the job done in 2021. It was not a hopeless situation. If Nagy managed to show some forward momentum with the offense the same group gets to bring back more players in 2022 and try and develop Fields. But they showed nothing. There was zero sign of life with any of the QBs. They didn’t score. They had another losing streak and vets quit on the coach. It was not an inevitable situation, other than the fact Nagy sucked.
