  1. I like the general tone of acknowledging the need to score and moving off the defense/special teams style. But I disagree about them bringing in a lot of people. As for the lack of players available now, that is why he had to do a better job addressing the line weeks ago.
  2. They may have been the best players, but I think Brian Bosworth was the biggest name to go through it.
  3. You've never heard of the supplemental draft or you haven't heard any talk about this year's supplemental draft? The NFL supplemental draft. I might have heard of it in passing, but this is the first time someone I've heard of has been eligable. You must be young. There's been a handful of pretty big name players that went through it. I think the 80's and 90's saw some shenanigans with guys trying to avoid going to losing franchises ending up there. But it's been pretty barren for a decade or two. The Bears drafted somebody there recently.

  5. That's some bad timing for Louis. Between him and Webb there's almost a sense that the young guys don't want to step into the roles for some reason.
  6. http://twitter.com/#!/vxmcclure23/status/103948661037334528 @vxmcclure23 vaughn mcclure Lance Louis was sick today, Lovie Smith said. Urlacher had general soreness.
  7. The general flow of free agents is away from smaller teams and toward bigger teams, making the net effect bigger on smaller teams. Additionally, there aren't a lot of ways for a smaller market team to win. Bigger teams have all sorts of flexibility. Smaller teams, who actually try, would be more dependant on that flow back of comp picks.
  8. Based purely on age...to be completely honest I just see him as an elite player trying to age gracefully and win. Nothing ages more gracefully than a late 30's veteran on the Cubs.
  9. If the costs of signing draft picks goes unchecked, it will become harder and harder for small market teams to compete in that department. And if free agent compensation goes down, it will be harder to keep replacing your own guys when they get too expensive.
  10. If it shows anything, it shows how team-dependent a stat like RBI is. A couple things must be working against him. A) The team OBP sucks B) One of the guys hitting in front of him is Pena, who tends to either make an out, draw a walk or hit a homerun. All of those situations make driving him in difficult. C) Along with those issues, he's got 4 PA with men on 2nd/3rd and just 6 with man on 3rd. He's batting .375 in those limited situations but has just 3 combined RBI. Only 99 total PA with men in RISP. When you consider an average of just 3 hits in 10 AB, you aren't getting a ton of opportunity (he's also done poorly with RISP) D) He's hit for little power himself (just 6 HR and a 129 IsoP compared to a 150-190 in his recent best years). E) I don't know how often he has been involved, but this team has struggled with getting thrown out at the plate. Last year he hit almost exactly the same with RISP and with nobody on, this year there's variation. It's just chance.
  11. Sounds to me like both things are big market team friendly and player friendly, with smaller market teams being the losers.
  12. Did that require a question to be asked?
  13. I would do it in a heartbeat, but I'd be surprised if somebody traded a pick for him. Maybe a 7? Why bother sending anything of value to us when you can sign him (or someone like him) off the waiver wire in a couple of weeks? I don't know that anybody would do it, but if you felt he'd get a little more money on the open market and/or be signed by somebody else, or potentially not get cut, you would consider giving up a 7th rounder for him.
  14. It is a different time and place from when WGN helped them draw in a nationwide audience. Exposure in a starved market is how they capitalized on that issue. But that era is over. Keeping them on WGN isn't just a hit to the short-term bottom line, it's bad for long-term business. The nationwide presence is there. And it's not going anywhere, unless they just lose every season. Would anybody actually watch WGN if it weren't for the Cubs? Bulls. And for the godforsaken of the world, Blackhawks. Those aren't on the superstation though, right ? Just local WGN Channel 9?
  15. Colvin's AB was ugly bad. Please don't rub off on Castro.
  16. You are still talking out of your butt. You have no freaking idea if they have been lost forever. You are making this nonsense up based on a team that has stunk for five years in a bad pro sports market to begin with. Maybe you have some blowhard 65 year old tea party type who cannot fathom ever liking that team again. He will be dead soon and is meaningless in the net gain/loss of fans. And
  17. It has no other redeeming qualities. Even its promos irritate me. Everything about that network makes it seem like it's still the 90s. As a nj based fan though, it's the only place to catch a Cubs game consistently. You can come over if you bring scotch.
  18. I would bet that if you had a who would you want to leave first poll between those 3 Z would win for better or for worse. Personally, I hope that they mend fences but I can understand why they might want to trade him for the business reasons I mentioned. As for the Pacers, it was just an example of how fans can be turned off when things go too far. Of course, the Pacers situation was a lot worse than anything that has ever happened with Z as well. The Pacers were getting into legal trouble left and right while Z's questionable decisions haven't really hurt anyone. The Pacers keep losing, quit pretending that isn't the main problem.

  20. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/page/rumblings110816/jim-thome-truly-real-caring-person You can't afford to have the clubhouse struggle when fighting for 70 wins.
  21. you can tell wilkin didn't go to school for non-redundancy. yowzas Or maybe it was because other teams didn't want to pay what the Cubs were willing to pay.
  22. I live in downtown Indy and I run into absolutely zero racist rednecks. Been to Conseco Fieldhouse many times - never talked to any. It's dumb and naive to say the fans of Indy stopped supporting their team because they're racist rednecks. There's no basis to it other than the ignorant view of an entire state. People who say dumb things can be corrected once in a while, it won't hurt them. Moving on. Hey, go back and read. I said the fans left because the team has sucked for a while. Somebody else claimed it was because of personality. I said that whoever used the excuse of "bad guys" for leaving the team as opposed to the fact that they stopped winning is just throwing out a convenient excuse while hiding their racist tendencies. I run into racist rednecks in New York city on a regular basis, how in the hell can you possibly claim you've never seen any in Indy?
